Photo Description:
Muktinath Temple is one of the famous religious places in Nepal for Hindus and Buddhist. The Buddhist nuns are in charge of maintaining the temple and all its facets.

This place is located at the foot of the Thorong La Mountain, which has been a popular destination for trekkers (Thorong La Pass).

As winter progresses, this place gets covered with snow. Most of the people who can afford it, migrate to different cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara to escape the cold; while the poor have no choice but to fight through the cold. As a lifeline, they collect and carry firewood from the nearby jungle (at Lete) which is at more than a day’s walk.

In this picture the inhabitants of Ranipauwa are cutting logs for firewood using a traditional axe. This will be used cooking as well as keeping them warm.

Photo Description:
The photo was taken a year back at the Patan Durbar Square. People irrespective of age, gender or nationality gather for a chit chat with friends and family while enjoying the historic atmosphere of the square. Patan, officially known as Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City, is one of the major cities of Nepal and is located in the south-central part of Kathmandu Valley. Patan is also known as Manigal. It is very famous for its rich cultural heritage, with its tradition of arts and crafts being the most popular.

The picture above is of a kid who in the afterhours is relaxing riding his bicycle. He just seems to be enjoying being a kid in the midst of the great Patan Durbar Square.

Photo Description:
Nepal is a Hindu nation where a true devotee can feel the presence of Lord Shiva everywhere. A lot of the Hindus from different parts of the world come and worship Lord Shiva on the day of Maha Shivratri with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm.

This picture was taken at Pashupatinath Temple, the holy Mecca for Hindus. Smoking chillum, applying ash all over the body is one of the popular practices of the Shadhus that reside at the temple.

Ghalegaun, also known as Ghanpokhara, is situated at the foot of Lamjung Himal in the north-central part of Nepal. It is an exotic and pristine village endowed with an unparalleled scenic grandeur; and also home to the world famous Gurkha soldiers, the Gurungs. Repository to a unique ethnic culture, Ghalegaun is a true microcosm of stunning natural beauty mixed with an unspoiled ethnic lifestyle.

Ghalegaun is a model village for experiencing the typical culture and lifestyles of the Gurung people. Age old cultural dances like Jyaure, Serka, Dohori, Ghatu, Sorathi, Jankri and more are performed on various occasions accompanied by different musical instruments and the dancers in traditional dresses.

The picture depicts the local children basking in the warm sun. The innocence in their faces downplays their daily hardship.

Photo Description:
Ghalegaun is a small village in Lamjung District of the mid-northern region of Nepal. It is a typical hill station consisting of about 70 to 80 houses of the local Gurung tribe. The local Gurungs are the Royal Gurungs and are called “Ghale”.

In Picture are local shepherds herding about 700 sheep. The owner is a local of the Ghale Uttarkanya Village Development Committee (VDC). Sheep are taken care of by the local shepherds who use trained dogs to help them.

Sheep are used to get milk, ghee, cheese and Radi (Blanket). Incomes are distributed according to the ownership. The VDC also pays the salary of the local community schools teachers with the income from the sheep husbandry.

Sheep are never tagged but the shepherds know which ones belong to which owners!

Photo Description:
This picture was taken on September 27, 2012, the first day of Indra Jatra at Indra Chowk when Kumari was about to be carried in her chariot.

Kumari literally means -Virgin in Sanskrit, Nepali and other local languages. She is regarded as living goddess and a source of supreme power. Kumaris are prepubescent girl selected from Sakya clan (Buddhist) family of Newari community and is worshiped during religious occasions. Throughout Nepal, there are several Kumaris and among them the Kumari of Kathmandu is the most famous. The Kumari of Kathmandu lives in the Kumari Ghar, a palace located at Kathmandu Durbar Square.

A rigorous process is followed in the selection of Kumari. The current Kumari, Matina Shakya, was selected in October 2008 at the age of four. It is believed that she is the incarnation of goddess Taleju (Durga).

This picture was taken on the first day of Indra Jatra (Indra is the God of Rain) on September 27, 2012. It is one of the biggest Jatra (Festival) of Kathmandu Valley. It is also called Yanyā Punhi (Kathmandu’s Fullmoon) and Kumari Jatra.

One of the attractions of Indra Jatra is the Pulu Kisi also known as Tānā Kisi, a wicker representation of an elephant, who is believed to be the carrier of Indra himself.

Photo Description:
Sailung is one of the wonders that Nepal has to offer. A place which is yet to be explored by the tourists. This picture was taken in Sailung, the place which offers magnificent views over Kalinchowk to the Annapurna, Langtang, Gauri Shanker, Everest and Kanchenjunga ranges, to the South the Mahabharata hills roll over the Sun Koshi River and down to the Terai below.

Sailung is regarded by the Tamangs as the abode of the territorial deity, Sailung Phoi Sibda Karpo, Sailung’s “White Male Lord of the Earth”. The souls of the ancestors together with the “Lord of the Earth” guarantee the well-being of the people and the fertility of the soil.
