Deerwalk Picnic at Lakure Bhanjyang, A Memoir

sany01801

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

-Shel Silverstein

For an urbanite like me who immediately reaches for his phone after hearing a tweet, 27 November 2010 was a welcome change. This day, we at Deerwalk went picnicking near Lakure Bhanjyang. And there, when we heard tweets we looked towards the trees. We were a wild bunch with only one thing on our minds, “to have fun”, and we got more than what we had expected.

For some, the journey started at the Deerwalk Office, in the office van A.K.A “Deerwalk Yatayat”, around 8:00. Others had been provisioned other vehicles. We were all excited and looking forward to rendezvous with everybody else at Kaushaltar. We had tea while waiting for the others. Not surprisingly many of us arrived late. The surprise was that the “Deerwalk Yatayat” had gone by another route.

We need to make compromises in every aspect of our lives and specially for those who had been dwelling on naïveté, the ride was quite bumpy, literally. It started at Kaushaltar towards Luvu. We now know that we could have avoided the wear and tear had we taken the route from Gwarko. The unavoidable ascent continued at Dhungen with coarsely graveled road, sharp turns and steep slopes. It remained the same till the end. Some four wheeled drives had it easy but for the small cars, like the one I was driving, it was a struggle. Manoj dai had informed us about a narrow diversion at 2.7 K.M. but due to a rounding error of about a K.M some guys missed it and nearly reached the top of the hill. Luckily for us the “Deerwalk Yatayat” was leading the way. As we reached the picnic spot we stretched our backs, looked downhill at the road and reflected on the arduous journey.

The place was serene. Down below we could see the valley, growing like a huge slum, chaos and black smog all over it. Up above and far at a distance we could see white peaks, beckoning us to a meditative trans with their stillness, simplicity and grandiosity. The picnic spot was about 10 minutes of perspiration from where we had parked. Each of us had to carry things to the spot. There were local villagers willing to help us carry the heavy loads like gas cylinders which would have been
impossible for us to carry on the hills. We stopped complaining about the trail when we saw that the villagers were scurrying with a 30kg gas cylinder on their back as if it was a rose petal.

All of us were famished, so we took charge of chores, laying out the matresses and preparing bread. The actual picnic started immediately after we had an almost sumptuous bread and jam breakfast. Most memorable were the team building/party games. One of them was aptly named “musical stones”, an improvised version of the “musical chairs”. The other was “pinata” or “pinyata”. The objectives of each were different. The former demanded physical strength to go around a circle until the music stopped when we had to quickly step on stones to keep us in. The next was to guide a blindfolded teammate to a pot full of toffies and break it. It was more tactical for we had to invent argots to give directions while the other team tried to mislead the blinded-folded guy. At the bottom however, both of the games were meant to have fun. Then in the evening we distributed the poll results for “thinnest employee in deerwalk”, “hitler of deerwalk”. All the winners got some very “useful” prizes like a fake radish, birthday caps etc. It was pretty hilarious.

Our office chef prepared bountiful lunch after which we scattered in groups to play cards and have some drink. Some of us intrepid, even undertook the challenge to walk to the top of the hill. Admist the howling melange of cheers, jeers and moans of the gamblers a bunch of us had already walked about a kilometer towards the top. We could see the valley below, the mountains and the spot itself like miniature models. It was nice to have people gathered all around playing cards, making conversation and telling others about the predicaments faced when they were students.

We had become kids once again. We had forgotten our projects and the humdrum affairs. Trivialities like winning the musical stone or making friends was once again on our priority. To say that we had fun there would be to disparage our experience. It was almost unsurpassed in enjoyment. As with all good things in life it was to end at around 5 pm. We danced after having some soup and the we came down that nostalgically bumpy road and traced our way back to the dusty city. I think we were all just silent the whole way, just reflecting on how the day had gone.

Sulekha Bhandari :
sulekha Being excited, as always, to watch Mother Nature in her full glory and grandeur, Deerwalk, with passion in the eyes and thrill for the adventure gave a thumbs-up for the destination: Lakure Bhanjyang.

Holding the limitless enthusiasm on the face of all deer walkers, there was a common voice screaming “Lakure Bhanjyang, Lakure Bhanjyang” throughout the way, which was even more more so when we finally got to our destination. But as we got on the peak, a few minutes silence seized the place as it was a breathtaking view from the top and that nobody wanted to get distracted from it. The golden rays of the sun and the cool breeze were helping us gaze around all the sight that our eyes could covered. Had we not captured ourselves in the photographs, it would certainly seem like we were being unfair to nature. That made every deer walkers busy in taking photographs with different poseur. As none of us wanted to leave the place with a little joyful reminiscence, we started setting up a picnic fun in no time. Many different sort of fun like eating, singing, dancing, playing cards, musical stone(chairs were not available so we called game as ‘musical stone’) in the arena of Lakure Bhanjyang had charmed all the deer walkers so, that no one wanted to leave the place. We all wanted to stay there, feel the serenity of the place and touch the beauty of the nature.

But no journey becomes completely triumphant when the journey makers don’t get back to the place where it begins from. “Ba Bye Lakure Bhanjyang, we will embrace you again very soon by hiking”, with these words on mind and heart, Deerwalk team set their foot back on the track to home.

Ashish Vaidya:
ashish It was a welcome change for us to leave the chaos of KTM and be at the hill tops of Lakure Bhanjyang. For new employees like us, the trip provided a great opportunity to know the people of Deerwalk. Traveling through the narrow winding roads, chatting with the brand new colleagues was a nice experience. At the top of the hill we were greeted with a beautiful view of the Kathmandu valley. After a full day of adventure we descended back to KTM, and headed back to our houses. Over all, the day was fun filled and entertaining. It was a big relief to know that I would be working with a bunch of fun loving people at Deerwalk. I am looking forward for more events in the future.

डाक्टर : कार बनाउने काम दश गुणाले बढी गार्‍हो रे, कसरी ?

Hiking from Lele to Godavari

Hiking Route: Lele to Godavari
Date: Feb 01, 2009
Hike Coordinator: Niraj Shah
Participants: Upendra Pradhan, Kapil Pandey, Pravinda Ranjit, Bhaskar Shrestha, Abishesh Joshi and Niraj Shah

Looking at previous statistics we were expecting quite a lot of participants for this hike as well. But when the final list of participants was compiled, the number came down to just nine. It seemed that D2′ians were more interested in “tough 2-day Night stay out-of-town” hikes rather than “short sweet-feel good” hikes.

So, on Sunday, as expected, nine enthusiastic hikers were to show up. But again, some thought the hike would be an easy walk and decided not to join in. Finally, there were six of us, travelling down South to Lalitpur country side. The original plan was to hike up from Lele to BhatteDanda and see the PIA crash site and come back down. But on enquiring locals about the hiking trail, we came to know that the short-sweet-feel-good hike would be too short to feel good. So we travelled on, down to the southernmost end of Lalitpur towards Chandanpur in search of an appropriate hiking trail. The search went on for quite a while (till 12 in the noon to be precise). Finally Upendra dai suggested a route he had travelled 12 years back. The hiking trail was from Lele village to Godavari. To get to the starting point we had to travel back down to Lele village, an hour’s drive from where the plan was conceived. So, back inside the van and towards Lele.

Lele finally and Godavari another four hours of walk…but does Upendra remember the trail he walked 12 years back? We all liked to believe that he did…and so we all followed his lead through ups and downs and didi ko pasal and beer ko glass and Mankamana temple and fighting the Ultraviolet assult with our improvised UV protection goggles :-P (See the picture below for the UV protection goggles we mean). And after 4 and half hours we finally believed that Upendra knew the trail.

As a continuation to the “Community Service” theme based hiking, this week we took a trip to Sankhu, a small historical town situated approx. 25 km north east of Kathmandu. Although we were supposed to be a group of 13, only 7 of us could manage to be a part of the hike that day. Passing through the busy and dusty area, we reached to a peaceful area of Sankhu at around 9 AM. After having breakfast at Sankhu bazaar, we headed towards Lapsephedi, the base of Jersingh Pouwa. Local villagers, including Dhami- Jhakris [Traditional Healers], were gathered in the main bazaar for participating in a local festival there.

Shree Kalika Sharan Secondary School
03 Shree Kalika Sharan Secondary School

We intially had a plan to visit the local school at Lapshiphedi but unfortunately the school was off due to local festival. So we decided to visit the high school at Jarsingh Pauwa. We reached our destination Shree Kalika Sharan Secondary School; Jersingh Pauwa at around 12:30pm.This school stands as major institution in that locality, and is influenced by Tamang students and culture. We found the excitement among the students over there, might be thinking as if there is going to happen some special function.

Thanks d2..we knew the importance of speaking
04 Thanks d2..we knew the importance of speaking

As our tradition, we distributed copies and pencils among students of primary level, from Grade I to VI. We also conducted a small talk program on “IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION” in three different classes. Total of 6 enthusiastic students spoke brilliantly on the assigned topic. The expressed views were so practical that it got us spellbound.  We presented them with a special gift for their participation. We also distributed additional books and sport accessories to the school. Seeing the students play on the school ground with the accessories we provided brought a sense of great joy to all of us. Teachers supporting our visit seemed excited, as well.

Again seven of us
05 Again seven of us

The physical exertion was momentarily forgotten, eclipsed by a sense of accomplishment. Our contribution was not even equivalent to a drop of water in the sea, but still the smiles on the faces of the children, during our informal program, meant a lot. As we left school and returned, we were unanimous about the idea of integrating community service as a part of all upcoming hikes.

Indeed....Small is Beautiful
06 Indeed….Small is Beautiful

We visited 232KW ‘Salinadi Power Plant’ at Lapsephedi; named after a religiously famous river Salinadi where thousands of devotees offer Pooja and recite the Swasthani manuscript every day throughout the month-long Brata. “Small is beautiful” written on the board, of course it was beautiful. The technical officer of the plant was very friendly and helpful. He explained the functioning and the other aspects of the plant. We came to know that the power generated from that plant is connected to the national power grid. We heard that there are so many micro hydro power plants throughout Nepal but observed closely for the first time. Since it was a little early to return home, the team decided to visit the BajraYogini Temple, just half an hour away from Lapsephedi.

Another hike starts to Bajra Yogini Temple
07 Another hike starts to Bajra Yogini Temple

As we followed the route to the temple, the physical exertion started to take its toll again. The uphill route and growing hunger got us grounded momentarily on our way. Finally a few gulps of water and we were ready again for the final climb towards the temple.

Approaching the temple premises
08 Approaching the temple premises

Upon reaching the temple, we rested there for about half an hour. During the stay, we visited the main temple and then participated in a mini photo session before moving downwards the well maintained stairs of the temple. We then headed back to the Sankhu Bazaar.

Jaya Bageshwori
09 Jaya Bageshwori

The ride back to home was exceptionally quiet this time.We were all recollecting our energies back and relaxing our overworked leg muscles. Nischal Dai, on the other hand, was busy in site-seeing and photography on our way back. The smooth road at Sankhu soon lead to the bumpy roads at Jorpati, and this time these bumps were not doing well on our tiring bodies. We stopped at Sinamangal at a local Thakali restaurant for our lunch at around 5pm.

Even though this week’s trip was not as physically demanding as compared to some of the past hikes, we were able to cover community service and a visit to the Bajrayogini temple, and of course delicious meal at a Thakali restaurant. Yum!!
Hats off to all the brains involved in conjuring up such a motivational theme. Let the feeling of communal service prosper in future hikes as well.
