FIFA.com – World primed for a football feast

FIFA SouthAfrica 2010 stadium Nelson mandela 1990

The same awe-inspiring Johannesburg venue, which witnessed Mandela’s first mass rally following his 1990 release, will stage tomorrow’s Opening Match, the first of 64 games. In one sense, it is familiar territory for the South Africa coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira, as he prepares to lead a team at his sixth FIFA World Cup, which is a new record. In another respect, it will be like nothing he has experienced before, with the recurring hopes of a FIFA World Cup host nation lent an extra dimension by the passion and fervour with which the Rainbow Nation’s people will back their team.

There are exciting games to anticipate in all ten venues. There is the traditional ‘group of death’ – commonly perceived to be Group G, where Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, Portugal and Korea DPR lock horns – and match-ups that renew long-standing rivalries. Only one newcomer has joined the party – Slovakia – while two coaches will attempt to emulate Franz Beckenbauer and Mario Zagallo in becoming FIFA World Cup winners as player and coach. They call Johannesburg the City of Gold and there could be no more appropriate setting for the winners of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to clasp the gleaming Trophy above their heads. Before that moment, late in the evening of 11 July, a huge number of unforgettable stories are waiting to be written.

via FIFA.com – World primed for a football feast.

The wait is almost over. At 4pm (CAT) tomorrow, a FIFA World Cup™ like none of the 18 that have gone before will begin and not only South Africa but an entire continent will rejoice. Over the next 31 days a footballing and cultural fiesta will unravel in Nelson Mandela’s homeland and the colour, noise and excitement promise to stun the senses.

From 15 May 2004, when South Africa was invited to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to this moment – with the big kick-off between the host nation and Mexico but hours away – the resonance of the first world finals to be held on the continent of Africa has proved an inspiration for millions. In footballing terms South Africa have some way to go to join the elite. They are down at 83rd in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking and have just a solitary FIFA World Cup victory to their name, 1-0 over Slovenia in 2002. But as it becomes the 16th nation to stage football’s greatest event, South Africa will dominate the world’s sporting consciousness like never before.

As a country they believe it will bring significant changes, uniting black and white around the green and gold of the Bafana Bafana jersey and lengthening the distance between today and a troubled past. With their noisy vuvuzelas and inherent exuberance they promise to make this a spectacle that our eyes and ears will not forget for a long, long time. That goes for players as well, the superstar names – Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney – and the rest who have travelled from all four corners of the globe to showcase their skills in ten magnificent stadiums

The footballing calendar is so congested it can sometimes be difficult to generate real excitement around an event with another, equally big and exciting competition following swiftly on. South Africa 2010 promises to be different as it unleashes the potential of a continent whose teams have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of a FIFA World Cup before.

In the seven months since all 32 contestants became known, conjecture has swirled from north to south, east to west, as to who will be the likely winners. Can Brazil make it to a sixth title? Will Spain, crowned European champions for the first time two years ago, take the vital last step to global dominance? Can Diego Maradona inspire Argentina from the bench in the same mercurial fashion as he managed on the pitch in 1986? Will England under their Italian coach at last bolt some tangible achievement on to their undoubted potential? Can Italy repeat their success of the 1930s in winning back-to-back competitions?

Similarly, will it be the host nation, Cameroon (making their sixth appearance at the global showpiece), or the talented Côte d’Ivoire who lead the African charge? All will become clear over the next five weeks until only two teams are left standing and, at Soccer City Stadium, they will dispute the right to be called world champions for the next four years before it all starts up again at Brazil 2014.

USA – England (1 – 1) Post-Game Thoughts – USA

his draw almost feels like a win. I shudder to think what a win would have felt like. Could I have handled and processed it? Despite whispers in your ear from your British friends about luck the USA fully deserved a share of the points today. England, of course, dominated play, but the USA stood in strong and had a better chance of stealing the three points after Green just managed to tip a Jozy Altidore strike onto the bar. English star Wayne Rooney was quiet for a good part of the game, and ignoring a few errors Onyewu looked to be at his best. Secretly, I’m glad the USA goal was scored the way it was. It makes it all the more embarrassing for the English. On that thought, here on my post-match notes:

- Michael Bradley played the best game I’ve ever seen from him. He didn’t score a goal, he didn’t make a great assist, but he looked the most mature and poised I’ve ever seen him play. This is significant because he was playing against two very good midfielders in Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. He had one giveaway that sticks out in my mind, but other than that he looked the most comfortable in possession I’ve seen from him to date. There are a lot of players ahead of him in MOTM voting, but Bradley was solid today.

- I can’t say the same at all for Ricardo Clark. It would seem to me that the main reason Bob Bradley persists in playing Ricardo Clark is so that goals like the one Steven Gerrard scored in the 4th minute won’t happen. I accept this is a tactic. However, when Ricardo Clark gets caught ball watching and lets Gerrard nip in and score the kinds of goals he’s in the game to be stopping I have to ponder the logic of why he is on the field. If the decisions were mine to make I’d prefer to see Torres start with Bradley in the middle of the field, but if Bob Bradley insists on being defensive he should consider playing Edu over Clark.

- “England is position for position a better team than the United States.” Yeah. Except Goalkeeper. Tim Howard’s performance was superlative. To attempt to describe it in words does it no justice. So I’ll stop here.

- Steve Cherundolo also had a standout performance today. Were it not for Tim Howard’s heroics, Steve would’ve been a shoe in for man of the match. His runs and crosses down the right flank were threatening, and he was assured in defending all night. A great showing from the Hannover 96 man.

- The forwards may need to kick it up a notch. I’ll give them some benefit of the doubt given who they were facing, but aside from his move past Carragher in the second half Altidore didn’t do much to create any goal scoring chances. Robbie Findley did even less. His speed is useful in so far as it occupies defender’s minds, but at some point he needs to do something with it. Hopefully these two can put in better performances against weaker opposition. Otherwise, I wouldn’t mind seeing some more of Herculez Gomez.

- Donovan and Dempsey showed to be the two most talented USA field players once again. I wouldn’t say either had an amazing game, but Dempsey’s goal was important. Overall I thought they were composed, competent, and skilled. Consistently the USA’s two biggest threats. Let’s hope they too can turn it on against Slovenia and Algeria.

like i said before the tournament germany would be real force if they played well, its early days but their gonna be hard to beat, ballacks abscence was never gonna be felt
  • I feel bad for australia, although it was an excellent showing by Germany. The way they were able to move the ball around was breathtaking, easily the best team of the tournament so far.

I have a full analysis on my blog for this game, stop by, check it out, and leave comments.

And off the haters go (on a forum I use): they’re not really Germans etc.

Ironically one such poster comes from France, they with their Former-French-Colonies national team.

  • Hui_km
Germany slaughtered Australia. So far the most creative attacking team of the tournament. The Argentinian game was a one-man show by Messi. This one, the whole German lineup moved in unison. Superb.

D2 Football Flicks (Corporate Day Out)

Photo: Ravi Sharma
Report: ManojR/RajivS

Team D2 had taken part in a “Corporate Day Out” six a side soccer tournament organized by
Kgarira.com. D2 was selected in Group B along with Synergy Group and WWF(World Wildlife Fund).
Last Saturday was group stage matches of the tournament where D2 had to play against Synergy Group
and WWF to secure its position on quarter-finals.

First match for the day was with Synergy Group which started around 11 AM. Both teams were confident about winning the game. D2 made its intentions clear from the very beginning with several long shots towards Synergy’s post but non succeeded as Synergy goalie stood tall infront of the post. Synergy also made some attacking effort but they weren’t able to penetrate the D2 defense. Both teams had a lot to think about in the half time talks as the very action-packed but goal barren first 15 minutes ended.

In second half, both teams came with added energy to take a lead on a game. In the 28th minute of the game
D2 got a corner kick and that was the match decider. HiteshK’s corner kick went flying into TejR’s leg and he simply couldn’t miss it from a feet away right in front of the post.Time was running, and Synergy players were in a hurry to make equalizer but referee’s final whistle converted their desire into void.Team D2 won the game by 1-0.

In Second league match D2 had to play with WWF. After a tough victory over Synergy, D2 players were rising high with confidence and came into ground with a mission to defeat WWF as well. On other hand WWF had to win this game to enter into quarter final because they already had lost their first game against Synergy by 4-0, but there determination was crushed by Ptratik’s first goal on fifth minute of the game. Pratik netted in another two goals within half time and registered his name to became first player of the tournament to score a hattrick. WWF looked bit weaker than D2 as D2 had full control over the game. WWF’s some attempts make the ball kiss the net was fouled by D2′s golie Amendra.

In second half Bhabuk from D2 scored the fourth goal of the match for D2, which was followed by Rajiv’s superb fifth goal. Team D2 won the game by 5-0.

With both wins, Team D2 successfully entered into quarter-finals of the tournament by becoming group B topper. Quarter final has been schedule for Saturday, June 5.

D2 Football League – Gameweek 12 – Product Pirates Vs. Verisk Rhinos

Last Saturday Pirates were in mood to win the game; they had to win this match to keep their dream of winning the tournament alive. On the other side, Rhinos had completely different plans. They have been showing their toughness and aggression in the recent times of the tournament. They were in no mood to let Pirates win this match. Though they lost their first leg against Pirates, they had a hope that they would win this match because they had brought SujanB as their left winger. Combination of SujanB and RamW might help them to win this match.

“Both the teams were thinking they deserved to be leading the score-line, but…”

From the very start of the game, Rhinos made some great move. Starting with a perfect pass from RamW to RoshanS, the ball was struck beautifully only to be blocked by KeshabB(Pirates GK). Rampant Rhinos were running wild on the glossy green ground but Pirates were not intimidated by their opponent and gradually took control over the game. Combination of RajivS, BhabukK and VinayaS: key front liners of Pirates gave Rhinos’ Defense a hard time. Their counterparts; RamW, SujanB, VishnuK, HimalK and RoshanS were playing beautiful passes and kept Pirates defenders busy all the time. By the time, Referee decided it’s the time to stop the game for half time, both the teams were thinking they deserved to be leading the score-line, but the actual score of 0-0 was resonating on both team players’ head like the sound of ungreased machines.

Both the teams were loaded with some new tactics for second half. It seemed that whoever scored the first goal might win the game. The deadlock ended in 20th minute, when RajivS stole the Rhinos goal-kick from their player and rolled a perfect pass to VinayaS, which he was so determined to capitalize on that he delivered a thunderous kick to the ball. It moved like an A-train hurrying to kiss the back of the net. Pramod’s diving effort seemed helpless to stop the goal. Celebration started on Pirates side but their celebration lasted only for 5 minutes when ManojR’s hand gave Rhinos a free kick in a formidable position. SujanB took that free kick which was saved by Pirates Defender but the ball was still on Pirates D-Area. After some mess inside the small D, ShankerS pushed the ball behind the goal-line that made Pirates’ dream sink like a cannon ball. The game ended 1-1 draw which provided Rhinos second 1 point of the tournament, still not enough to take them out of the bottom position in the league table. The other camp, however, looked more disappointed to receive a major blow to their feeble title hope.

Friendly Football Match D2 Vs. UNMIN

Everyone expected it to be a sunny Sunday morning, but the day started with some pretty heavy rain. It looked like the rain would prevent D2 from playing a friendly match with UNMIN (United Nations Mission in Nepal). But strong desire and passion for football prevailed over the treacherous weather condition. D2 were supposed to have a strong starting line-up with wonderful players on the substitution list. However, because of the weather condition only 11 players were available for D2.

But strong desire and passion for football prevailed over the treacherous weather condition.

Though it was raining the players reached the ground by 8:00am. Roshan (D2) forgot to bring his football boot so we had to wait for another 15 minutes till we could provide him proper shoes. Finally all the players were ready and the game started at 8:30am. It was decided before the game that there will be unlimited substitution but because D2 had only 11 players it meant no substitution for them whereas UNMIIN had few players on the bench and they made sure they utilized their subs during their game.

It was a friendly match and the winning team was supposed to receive a breakfast feast from the other team.

It was a friendly match and the winning team was supposed to receive a breakfast feast from the other team. With breakfast in mind both the team played some attacking football. The game was evenly poised as both the team tried to take an early lead. However, Prashanta (D2) managed to sneak a goal past Oscar Perez-Figueroa (GK, UNMIN) as the ball danced amid a host of players in the D-Box area of UNMIN in the early moment of the game. Midway through first half Hitesh took the ball from the right side and drove towards the top left corner as D2 extended their lead to make it 2-0. Shortly after that D2 won a free-kick near the D-Box, Roshan (D2) made a brilliant attempt to curl the ball on the top-left corner but his attempt was wide as D2 was again agonizingly close to extending their lead. Meanwhile, UNMIN made some brilliant moves from their right side, Claudio being the key architect. He proved to be a constant threat as D2 tried everything to stop him and his teammates to cut the lead. In doing so, UNMIN conceded a free kick on the left side near the D-Box area. Pratik (D2) stepped up to take the free kick. He drove a powerful drive that penetrated the wall of UNMIN as it flew straight towards the left of the goal post. The score line was D2 3 – 0 UNMIN. UNMIN made some brilliant moves but were unable to finish their moves.

Shortly after that D2 won a free-kick near the D-Box, Roshan (D2) made a brilliant attempt to curl the ball on the top-left corner but…

Second half started in similar manner but with the introduction of Steven Nyanti things began to change as this veteran made life difficult for D2 defense with his dribbling skills. He showed some brilliant dribbling skill that left the D2 defense at sixes and sevens. With the strong physical presence of Emmanuel Kapoi and Elgaili Zayid, UNMIN pressed forward to score goals. Eventually they were rewarded with a goal as Steven Nyanti tapped in a low cross from the right. It was a well deserved goal. In the late minutes Manik (D2) moved in as left defense to strengthen things at back. Up front Roshan and Bhuwan tried to score goals but the strong defense of UNMIN prevented them in doing so. Pratik made few surges down the right flank but UNMIN defense cancelled out the attack of D2. UNMIN pressed D2 mostly from their left flank with Steven and Srijan being the key figures.

Finally the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of a grueling and exciting game. It ended 3-1 and everyone looked tired but everyone enjoyed the game. Nevertheless, as someone said “It rained but it’s worth the pain”.

Overall it was a wonderful match. UNMIN players looked a bit rusty and with few training sessions they’ll be a formidable team. Oscar (GK) was wonderful with the gloves as he made some brilliant saves to deny D2 to extend their lead. He truly impressed everyone with his skill. Gabriel, Emmanuel and Elgaili were pretty solid in the middle. Clovis, Joseph and Fulgence proved their position at the back ably supported by Munish. Steven was probably the star of the match as he made life difficult for D2 and Srijan supported him pretty well. Claudio made some brilliant moves down the right flank and Cassio made some brilliant run up front but both were unlucky not to have scored.

Both the team agreed to play again in near future and UNMIN must be ready to get back on D2 next time.

D2 Football League – Gameweek 10 – Products Pirates Vs. Data Daemons

The final game of the 1st half of D2FL saw Products Pirates climbing to 2nd position in the league after registering a convincing win over Data Daemons.

First goal came in the 10th minute when Daemons goalie misjudged the free kick from Bhabuk (Pirates) and failed to take hold of the ball. Babins (Pirates) quickly capitalized on the opportunity and pushed the ball to the back of the net. Pirates were swarming in number of attempts with 5 of their players in the attacking role. Data largely were compelled to play the defense game. Shortly after the first goal, Vinay (Pirates) added another goal to take the score-sheet to 2-0. He found the ball in his feet and an empty net in-front amidst the crowded Data six yards box after Prajwal (Pirates) tossed the ball in from the right flank. Data came close to narrowing the Pirates’ lead to 1 but Keshab (Pirates) was well positioned to deny a well executed long range shot. As the 1st half came close to an end, Data showed some aggression and had few attempts on and off the target, but none of them paid off.

Pirates brought in another striker Asim, to a little shock, making their intentions clear – ‘to strike some more goals!’

Half time substitution showed the strategic changes in both the teams. Daemons changed their gloves man with Amendra (Daemons) going up front to attack, while Nabin (Daemons) coming back to guard the post. On the other hand, Pirates brought in another striker Asim, to a little shock, making their intentions clear – ‘to strike some more goals!’. Data tried to retaliate in the later 30 minutes of the game and increased the attacks with Nikesh (Daemons) and Chandra (Daemons) but Pirates’ defense was in no mood to let in any. On the other end of the field, Pirates got a spot kick after Vinay (Pirates) was clear off all the defenses and Nabin (Daemons) clutched his feet in an attempt to grab the ball. Bhabuk (Pirates) stepped up and showed the perfect execution of the penalty. Keeper dived in the correct direction but the effort was not enough to stop the 3rd goal from Pirates.

The score stayed 3-0 till the final whistle.

After the mid of the D2 Football League, all teams having played 4 games each, Services are on top of the league with their perfect record and 12 points, Products are vying for the title, 5 points behind the leaders at 7 points, QA chasing them with 2 points deficit, Data with 3 points at 4th and IT at bottom of the table with 1 point.

D2 Football League – Gameweek 9 – QA Bigfoots Vs. Verisk Rhinos

With 1 Loss, a draw and a win, the game against the Verisk Rhinos was a great chance for the QA Bigfoots to ensure their presence felt in the title race. The Rhinos were yet to open their account in the League as they were the only team not to have scored any point. It was a sunny Saturday morning and the game started at around 8 am and the Rhinos ensured that they would not leave any stones unturned to secure a win, let alone a draw.

The Rhinos started with Sujan Baral (D2Almuni) as their newest team member, ably supported by the veteran Vishnu Kshettri. Verisk Rhinos nearly had an opening goal merely minutes into play when AashishA (Bigfoots) seemed unaware as what to do with the ball and RamKrishna Wagle(Rhinos) nearly took the advantage as his shot hit the framework.

“Midfield maestro HiteshK (Bigfoots) setup a lovely ball for Bigfoot winger ManikM and he proved why he is a clean executioner of the ball with his half volley shot as it raced to kiss the back of the net.”

At around 15 minutes after the game started, midfield maestro HiteshK (Bigfoots) setup a lovely ball for Bigfoot winger ManikM and he proved why he is a clean executioner of the ball with his half volley shot as it raced to kiss the back of the net. For normal team this could have been the beginning of the end but not the Rhinos, as they were in a different mood. Despite a goal down, the Rhinos seemed not to have lost interest for an equalizer and soon enough SujanB (Rhinos) trying to cross the ball with 2 defender on his way ended up to get a sloppy shot at the goal which PrashantaS( GK Bigfoots) misjudge and it slipped between this legs to touch the net. This equalizer seemed to have reinvigorated the Rhinos as they fairly kept the host on back-foot.

The second half started with both the team trying to take a lead. A game of pure football was anticipated from the QA Bigfoots but with AbhishekS (Bigfoots) substituted, midway in second half due to an injury, Verisk Rhinos pushed their way up from the QA right side most of the time. The Bigfoots under pressure for a must win match for their hopes to be alive in the table looked a daunting task. The outcome of which was clearly anticipated and the Rhinos constantly pushed forward to get the lead.

But the time was done and with no more goals produced, the match ended up in a 1-1 tie. This brought a very deserving 1 point to the Rhinos and left QA Bigfoots with 5 points and 2nd on the table.

D2 Football League – Gameweek 8 – Verisk Rhinos Vs. D2 Devils

It was indeed a very competitive game in between IT/Admin team – “The infuriated Rhinos” and Services team – “The hunting Devils”. The Devils had thought a very easy going strategy against the Rhinos which almost proved to be very costly for them. Rhinos, in their best forms that day, charged with all their tactics as they knew that they had a very strong competitor against them. The Rhinos had no points made in the score board till now so the overall strategy was at least to draw and at the best win.

In spite of a very good defense from Ujjwal Manandhar, the fittest Rhino of the team, a powerful and a devilish long shot by Richan Shrestha from the Devils, from outside the D-box, proved to be fatal to the Rhinos. Pramod Gautam, the Rhino with superb reflexes, was unable to block the ball in spite of his strong effort. Devils had their horns blown all over the field after the massive attack and were saying that they would end the game with 7 more goals like that. Rhinos, not giving up, knew that this was not a good start. With a change in defense strategy, the Rhinos made their move to equalize. The Devils who were expecting a 7-0 lead soon found out that the Rhinos now were at their forms and played very well after taking the first hit. The first half ended with a very fierce battle in between the two teams.

An equalizer from the Rhinos against the Devil!!! – Wow what a comeback!

In the second half, the changed strategy proved to be very fruitful to the Rhinos. A confident dribble from Surendra Maharjan, the swift Rhino of the team, scored an easy equalizer goal against the Devils almost at the end of the game, after tackling two Devil defenders. The spectators were speechless. An equalizer from the Rhinos against the Devil!!! – Wow what a comeback! The Rhinos were running all over the field celebrating the equalizer. The Rhinos did what they had come for. Soon after the equalizer, an unfortunate hand ball of Piyush Joshi, the toughest Rhino, in the D-zone resulted in a PENALTY for the Devils. It was just before 60 second of the final whistle. Rhinos were exhausted. All hopes were dangling in front Pramod (Rhino) now. Pramod was in front of the same person, taking the penalty shot, who had scored the first goal against him.

In spite of a very good effort, diving toward the goal shot, Pramod was not able to stop the power full penalty shot resulting in a 2-1 lead to the Devils. Seconds after the penalty shot, the final whistle was blown. The match ended in a 2-1 score with the Devils winning.

Although it was a lose to the Rhinos, Devils also appreciated the game that Rhinos had played. It was a WIN to the Rhinos as well with such a fantastic game against the Devils.
