Description:
A street vendor trying to sell his bubble pipes to people (esp. kids) who had come to see gaily dressed women dancing and singing at Basantapur Palace premesis on the occasion of “Teej”-the fasting festival for Hindu women.
Pictures of roadside vending such as above is a common story around streets of Kathmandu. The roadside markets along the city’s thoroughfares and adjacent areas supports the livelihood of many people, mostly migrant and illiterate. As the influx of people into the valley has increased, street vending has flourished over the years and proved important as a means of sustenance for those less lucky.

Description:
Certainly one of the most culturally rich capital cities in the world, Kathmandu has it’s own unique place. It has been ruled by several different dynasties from the Kirats, the Licchavis, the Mallas and the Shahs to the modern republic capital. This city has seen a lot and has like any other capital felt the effects of modernization. But still the old Kathmandu lives on.

A golden heaven to the most famous artists in the world, it has the old palaces of kings, the Kathmandu Durbar Square, has been listed as an UNESCO world heritage site. Hence, it will be preserved for the future. One can see in the picture how the old Kathmandu and the new Kathmandu have blended. We can see several centuries in this one single capture. The city has been able to do this admirably and lets hope we go into tomorrow’s Nepal whilst still preserving it’s grand heritage.

Sweet Day Dreaming

Description:
“I’ve got dreams – dreams to remember”.

Dreams – who doesn’t see them. It is perhaps the one feeling, the one freedom that we all enjoy, young – old, rich – poor, everyone dreams don’t they.Dreams are often a response to our daily thoughts, activities and sensations. They are often, then, a reflection of what has consumed our minds in the preceding day or two. Dreams are apparently a necessary part of our being.

This picture was taken in Basantapur. We see a richshaw driver sleeping ever so soundly during the day time. We usually see them around the Basantapur, Thamel area where mostly the Tourist enjoy these rides. May be there weren’t any passengers, so he took a quick Nap.

One can only wonder what is going through his mind. May be he is dreaming his Rickshaw carrying passengers the full day and earning a generous pay, may be he is dreaming of having a taxi to drive (hehe), may be he is dreaming about the new clothes he is gonna buy for his family, maybe he is dreaming for a bright future for his children, may be he is dreaming for a better Nepal.
