It was raining cats and dogs during the early hours of the day of the hike. This got me worried, as I didn’t want my first hike to-be from Deerwalk to get cancelled because of the heavy rain. As soon as the rain stopped, I rushed to the office. I was pretty excited about the hike, which must be the reason that I was the first one to get there before anyone else.

Bhattedanda clearly defies my definition and expectation of remote. This village is a part of Lalitpur district and is located only a few kilometers south of the Ring road. Yet, life in Bhattedanda contrasts starkly to that of a city. The tranquil and simplicity of village life seem to be completely unperturbed. One obvious reason for this might be the fact that the city folks find it utterly difficult to get there.

As I had never hiked before, I had some apprehensions about this hike. Nevertheless, on the day of the hike, I was pretty excited. We started our day leaving from Deerwalk office premises at around 7:30 in the morning and headed towards Telkot, the starting point of our hike. We briefly stopped at Koteshwor and Bhaktapur to pick up some fellow hikers. Afterwards, we had a wholesome breakfast at a restaurant named Hawa Ghar.

One fine Sunday morning, some Deerwalkers were still in their bed. They were reluctant to get off the bed early, as there were some unconfirmed rumors of bandh (shutdown) in the capital. When the hands of clock struck eight, all of a sudden my cell phone buzzed. It was a call to join a hike. “Hey! Where are you? We are heading out for a hike. You want to join? “, the voice on the other end said. It was too good an offer to pass!

I have always loved to go to new places and experience local cultures and traditions. As such, I was really excited to join the Deerwalk hike team. It was my first hike since joining the company.
The planned route of the hike was from Dhulikhel to Nagarkot. As planned, we gathered at the office premises at about seven in the morning. We left the office at 7:30 AM by office van. Before leaving, we took a head count – and it was seven - excluding Kedar, who was driving us to Dhulikhel. At 8:25 AM, we stopped at Banepa to pick up Rosina - the eighth hiker of our team.
