Two quick goals and a superbly taken free kick sealed the victory for Goethals Alumni as they got even with D2 to overcome the earlier defeat at home ground with a 4-2 win here at IOE football ground. Although they started cagily in the Pulchowk ground that was at least twice as large as their home ground, Goethals Alumni soon picked up some passes at the midfield exploited the defensive frailties of D2’s makeshift defense to score two successive goals inside the first 30 minutes.
D2 had its own disciplinary problem as their two centre-backs failed to show on time forcing D2 to start with a different center-back pair than the previous match and their lack of coordination was soon evident as they conceded two early goals. The goal of the match was, however, a superbly taken free kick from just outside of the 12 yard box which hit the underside of the bar and went in to make the score 3-0. D2 managed to pull one back just before half-time as Hitesh converted from close range after a string of good movements from D2. Shankar threaded in a penetrating pass from inside the opponent’s half to Sanjeet at the right side who cut it back again to Shankar. Shankar pulled the ball across to Hitesh, who calmly slid it past the keeper.
During the second half, D2 found some renewed hope when Asim converted to make the score 3-2 within 15 minutes from the restart. Shankar was again the architect whose pass found Hitesh with some free space just outside the opponent’s box who produced a wonderful lob that looped over the keeper and Asim, unmarked at the far post, nodded the ball into the open net. But any chance of D2 comeback was soon put off by a fourth from Goethals Alumni and, although D2 pressed on more during the last half-hour, the game ended 4-2.
