Quills
By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)
I couldn't go to work today. I fell ill. Dashain finally caught up with me, I guess. I stayed home and watched a movie. It was called Quills and it starred Geoffrey Rush as the infamous Marquis de Sade. The plot of the movie is partly based upon true events. Regardless of what one's opinion is of de Sade, I must state this for the record: the character portrayed in this movie is an inspiration to all aspiring writers.
In a desperate effort to censor him, they take away his paper, ink and quills. So he writes on his linen with red wine and a piece of wishbone. They take that away; so he writes on his clothes with his own blood. He does not stop even after his tongue has been cut off. He keeps writing until he takes his very last breath.
My keyboard is broken. The "a", "s" and "w" keys don't work. I wrote this text by copying and pasting each time I had to use any of those three letters. I would like to think of it as a tribute to de Sade, however little or inappropriate it may be.

i remember watching quills after reading a book about de sade called "satan's saint". he was artistically possessed. he always tested the limits, stretched the boundaries. in a time when brutal executions were public festivals, perhaps de sade was a necessity. i havent read any of his original works tho. the scene i most liked was when the people of a mental asylum perform a lewd play in rhymes.
the movie is also wonderful due to the performances of geoffery rush, kate winslet and jaoquin pheonix. and philip kaufman, the director, is a genius.

I've heard that the word sadist is a tribute to the infamous de sade. Sado - masochism...pleasure and pain. handcuffs, anyone?
