नेपाली सन्दर्भमा कोन्ट्रा समुह

By: Dipesh Gautam

Anarchy I,II and III.

By: Hitesh Karki

July 27, 2007

As I reach the corner of the street in between Gaushala and Sifal, the road next to the small forest opposite Pashupati, a diminutive figure whose personality seems to have been emboldened by the fact that he had a red star on his cap and wore fatigues, asks me to stop. He is inside an Indian SUV.

Can we do something?

By: Raj Gaire

July 26, 2007

Last week I got an email from Bishal. I had already received a clue about the mail from Saurav while chatting the day before. Well, the topic was not any new. We had been discussing such topics during college times. The topic is still under discussion and still could not conclude anywhere. It seems we need more thoughts and more brainstorming. Where else can I expect such thoughts, except this forum? Therefore I am posting it here.

Unlikely Source of National Integrity

By: Anup Sharma

July 25, 2007

For all those who have been watching current season of India Idol know exactly who Prashant Tamang is. Wikipedia says "Prashant Tamang (Nepali: प्रशान्त तामाङ) is a Kolkata-based singer and contestant on Indian Idol. He is the first contestant of Nepalese origin to make it to the final rounds of Indian Idol. He is also the first person from the police force to enter the final rounds."
Every Friday and Saturday there is a buzz in the streets and gallis of Nepal. People are found gossiping not ...

To my ladies

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

July 12, 2007

To the lady east of my window
You stand erect as the vision of my past
To the lady from my psychotic episode
My sincerest thanks for the intervention

To the lady whose eyes summoned me
I wish I knew then what I know now
To the lady from that dark summer
I wouldn't be what I am without you

To the lady with the mark of fire
Thanks for the grandiose welcome
To the lady from the ninety-fifth highway
I shall cherish your touch as wisdom

Reunion of Tri-chandra College - 2037 I.SC. Physical Group

By: Rudra Pandey

July 06, 2007

It was a great experience to see college friends after 25 years. It was hard to believe that 25 years had passed since we last hung around together at the Tri-Chandra campus area. We were 60 plus students in physical group (the group of students who joined college to prepare for engineering school). We were there as either our parents wanted us to be an engineer, or we were dreaming to become an engineer. All of us had some dreams and dreams kept changing everyday as we had to go through ...

Debilitating Economy Of Nepal

By: Anup Sharma

July 02, 2007

In 1996A.D. Nepal saw the emergence of a new clique of people with a new set of rules and ideas to bring back so called reforms in different sectors. Well the idea was great had it not been for the weapons. How Gandhi helped in bringing back the independence in India is an exemplary achievement, which was spearheaded with a common theme of fight through non-violence. May be that was possible (in our context) or might have been the other way, but once you make a plan that is going to involve the ...

The Way it is

By: Shreeya Shakya

June 29, 2007

It was just one of those lousy days, when you sit and watch the same stupid old movie you watched over a dozen times before and still have the patience to watch it all over again, scene by scene with an intense curiosity of what’s gonna happen next, when you already know what it is. Just those days, when after watching the movie, you switch channels on TV in an infinite loop! 1..2..3..4..55..56..1..2..3..4..55…56. I was desperately hunting for something to really amuse me. Then the button on my ...

In conversation with my boss.

By: Hitesh Karki

June 28, 2007

‘So what is it that you will remember about this place once you go back’. This happened to be the question I had posed to my American guest en route to airport on board a Toyota Hiace van as he was about to bid farewell to this city. He incidentally did not happen to be a ‘tourist’ for this was his official visit. He was my boss.

By: Roshan Maharjan

June 28, 2007

What if you are struck with a thunderbolt? These extremities are rare but it happens and it’s true. You try to take comfort in your friends but what if you get hurt more when things are disclosed. What if a wise decision of sharing it, make things even worse. You feel like you are alone. You are driven to a conclusion “No I can’t cope up with the situation; I have had enough of this life". There is no one in this world who is there to say “I am with you”. For the time being, you feel as if this ...

Juss wathced hindi motion picture,\"Life in a Metro\".It was good.Thoug the cast and crew were not so called Branded Actors, but Irfan Khan, kay kay menon,KanKana Sen,Shinyahuja were juss perfect.
Leaving acting in the limelight for a moment, the story(theme) of the movie was another strong point. It was the awful truth of the big metro cities. The crippling of people for Success. The Silky Tounge and low character business act show the low virtue of those people. All running for big thing which ...

Poor negotiation skills among the Nepalese officials

By: pawan

June 25, 2007

On 2007-6-21 issue of The Rising Nepal, there is an interesting news with heading:
Poor negotiation skills put Nepal's interest in shadow. That mean Nepalese are really screwed up here. There is one joke, when Nepal and India sits for negotiation, Indian side have all Nepalese issue with them before hand. Rituals are performed to make culture alive and culture is seamlessly mingled with religion. There are social bondages that suppress desires and freedom. I spent lots of time with a lady named Reema, a young 28 years old bright lady from Kuwait. When I first met her I though she was from Hawaii as there was no differences in her outfit with others...

Do you want to start your own QC offshore business?

By: pawan

June 20, 2007

Essentially, QC plays one big part in software development cycle, from beginning to end. Once blue print of software architecture is prepared, use cases are drawn and from use case, test cases are prepared. Use cases are prepared to optimize the chances of capturing the possible bugs. And finally tester starts the test and blah blah... This sounds pretty straight huh. Not so straight. Why? A software company needs many software testers. A tester requires an overall technical knowledge. A poor ...

Nepal Telecom sinks to a new low

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

June 19, 2007

I am not sure how true this is -- but apparently, NTC has blocked calling cards from the US. Seriously, can any entity sink any lower? If this is true, there has never been a better opportunity or a better catalyst to accelerate some sort of movement to dismantle this ailing body once and for all. Any comments? If this is not true, I'll be glad to remove this entry.

Buddha is not a god.

By: Dhilung H Kirat

June 15, 2007

Last Saturday I was dabbling around with fundamental philosophies of different religions with my friends. What I believe is god itself is a creation of human mind. Concept stimulated by the deep seated sense of insecurity and catalyzed by the sense of defeat against thousands of unsolved questions. God has been a perfect scapegoat. Most of the religions are based on superstition. They actually promote sin. Someone will come and protect you from your sin if you worship him. Isn’t that ...

Exploring the World Part I

By: Nilesh Shrestha

June 15, 2007

I landed in a beautiful serene place. The day was sunny and sky was lying in distant, clear and beautiful. I didn't see any patches of clouds. The place where I just stepped on was a beach. The yellowish sand and the clean dark blue sea was enthralling. I looked at myself, but I was quite a different. I felt I was taller, paler and more muscular. I was even not wearing glasses, but I liked it as glasses are not comfortable and I could see well there. I noticed I was wearing an orange color ...

Exit Interview and Its Impact on Organizational Effectiveness

By: Anup Sharma

June 13, 2007

Exit interview is a survey conducted with the departing employee of an organization to collect the information regarding why the employee is leaving the organization. It is conducted not only when an employee is leaving an organization but also at the time when his or her contract date expires. The main reason to conduct such a survey is to gather information which could be helpful in increasing overall effectiveness of the organization. Such a collection of data over a period of time can ...

Life – A Miracle

By: Aarju Pandey

June 12, 2007

The sun shines; warm and reassuring, sunlight is bouncing off leaves and flowers. A small bud nestled in the middle of a thousand. Unnoticed, a part of everything else, green and tiny, the bud rests. So exquisite, yet still overlooked and ignored. It’s just another bud in the midst of many. Too quiet, too small, is it important at all? So subtle that your eyes pass over it and you think nothing of it. But suddenly it’s growing bigger and bigger, bolder and bolder! Faster still, so bright that ...

This I Believe – Listening

By: Aarju Pandey

June 08, 2007

I believe in mental growth through listening. I believe that I can grow in terms of knowledge and experience when I listen. Listening is learning, whether it is listening to my teacher lecture about civil rights or listening to my grandma tell stories about her childhood in Nepal. Listening is, for me, to hear someone’s beliefs and incorporate them into my daily life. I believe that I can become more experienced in life and change my approach towards the ups and downs in life if I listen to ...

Why Nepal should go open source?

By: pawan

June 04, 2007

Most open source softwares can be downloaded from Internet. Most of them come with source code and relaxed license. For developers it is source code, for system admin it is stable and secure. For commoners it is free to download and use. Most of the open source softwares do not provide good features, many of them are difficult to use, and poor in GUI. And surely most of staffs would like to see full featured GUI in their workstations. But for Nepalese entrepreneurs open source could mean saving ...

My indulgence with happiness

By: Hitesh Karki

May 30, 2007

Thanks to my carelessness, I have been berated and scolded numerous times from all sorts of people, especially the dear ones. I am not punctual, not tidily dressed up, and often not affected by what is supposed to be a serious matter. There has hardly been a day where I have managed to get things proper and straight without much fuss. Remembering dates is something that has always let me down and yet, I must admit, I have hardly managed to recover from this habit of mine. Too many people have ...

Legal Wife and Legal Life

By: Rajendra Keshari Pandey

May 24, 2007

I wonder from time to time why people are so concerned about mere words such as: legal, illegal, moral, immoral, good bad, nice and not nice. My personal view is these words themselves are irrelevant; it all depends upon our own logic and necessities to suit our interest. What suits you is right and what does not suit you is wrong is the general tendency among people. It is like looking at half a glass of water, some see it half full, and others see it as half empty. Both are correct in their ...

Sweating Deities and Impending Doom

By: Dhaniya

May 22, 2007

There is a statue of Bhimeshwor in Charikot, Dolakha. The statue is unique in that it can excrete bodily fluids. Sweat, at least. The statue sweats in anticipation of some impending doom – mostly some misfortune to be visited upon the royal family but not limited to it. Last time it sweated was during the April Uprising. Before that, it was the royal massacre.

Over the weekend, the statue perspired again. Something is up around the corner.

I am not superstitious. But to any loyal ...

My filmmaker friend

By: Hitesh Karki

May 18, 2007

It's almost like the airplanes. Every time I watch them flying, for reasons unknown, I just can't take my eyes off them, till they disappear. I am sure I would be pretty much right if I were to say that the sight of planes landing and taking off is something we all have liking to, either by accident or choice. But then I am not here to eulogize the pilots or the airbuses but another breed of fascinating people called the filmmakers. Its a different story that every time I watch a particular ...

Are Beauty Pageants All ‘Indecent’?

By: Amit Pyakurel

May 18, 2007

Habitually, as in past, this year’s Miss Nepal pageant yet again faced shrill protests from some ‘pro-women’ groups and leftist party advocates. The women outside the pageant hall were loudly shouting that the ‘right’ of women was being dashed as the participants are ‘objectified’ in such events. However, the instance looked rather ironical, as non other than the ‘women’ who were participating in the pageant seemed to abide by ...

By: Kiran Chalise

We all know that the federal and unitary systems are the types of democracy and each system has its own merits and demerits. However, we have to go for our country-suited democratic system where all people can enjoy their equitable democratic rights with dignity and opportunity.

Federalism also refers to as federal government, a national or international political system in which two levels of government control the same territory and citizens. The word federal comes from the Latin term ...

Mum asked what you doing love; she said “I am changing mum”
“The mundane life is making me numb”
She wants to show what she got, so she changed
With the tears in her eyes she left
Whom she loved is now in her womb
At 18 she already feels like in a tomb

All she did was crying and lying
Why did she do it? Now she is prying
Her eyes are dry and the tears are gone
Everywhere she goes she has to shun

“Mum I’m changin'...hope you'll get me
Sick of this life I want to be free
So I’m gone, say my ...

Following the winter break of fifty days, regular classes of grade ten resumed in full swing and with it crept in the haunting fear of S.L.C. I wanted to pass S.L.C. in first division, at least. Only about two to four percent of students from Padmodaya were able to secure first division during those days. At that time, I could not dream of anything beyond S.L.C - I had no idea of what I would be studying a year from then and which college I would be attending.

Blocking the Truth…

By: Rajendra Keshari Pandey

May 02, 2007

I am a fan of Cartoons, proverbs and parables; in very simple ways they can express the bigger picture. Rajesh K.C.’s cartoon published in the Kantipur Daily was a beautiful example. There he refers to the inefficiency of Nepal Telecommunications distribution of pre-paid mobile facilities to the public, by depicting “Door Sanchar” as “Jhoor Sanchar” = Bad Communication. He says craftily “13 percent VAT and 30 percent Lathi.” This is the power and beauty of Cartoons. ...

My Midnight Ordeal and the Road to Jumla

By: Hitesh Karki

April 30, 2007

It was late in the night, way late by the Nepalese middle class standards where you normally go to bed after having your meal after the 8 pm news. I have not been following the ritual in spite of hailing from the same class for one or two sports update has almost become my sleeping pills without which sleep is pretty hard to come by. Federer had lost to Nadal once again on clay and Kobe had one more series of 50 plus point games etc etc but still, in spite of feeling the weight of the ...

True Love

By: Nischal Dahal

April 26, 2007

I was regarded as an introvert in my schooldays. The most difficult task was to express myself in front of a bunch of people, especially; girls were my greatest fear to talk with. Literally, I can even count the number of words, I used in my conversation with the girls in my class during my ten year tenure at school. Once I had an assignment from our English teacher.

The voice of equity

By: Nischal Dahal

April 22, 2007

The voice of equity has been on high these days in Nepal. All the leaders and those who are invited to speak infront of a bunch of people are chanting the slogan of “Samabeshi Nepal” and new Nepal. The song of reservation for the backward community is also being sung in the same stage. But, in my opinion, the grassroot level (Schooling) should be reserved for every child born in our territory not the higher education should be reserved. This will degrade our educational system while on the ...

An Appeal to Our Fellow Patriots Concerning Nepal’s grave and deteriorating situation

By: Ricesh KC

April 22, 2007

Dear fellow patriots; Namaste!! Once again, we are calling on all fellow patriots to pay immediate attention to our country’s grave and deteriorating situation. Unless we act now with utmost urgency, it may prove to be too late. The specter and horror of forever losing our beautiful nation to the dust-heap of history has become an all too frightening prospect for us. Our country’s disintegration is impending with a sectarian demand backed up with ever increasing destructiveness: civil strife, ...

That’s Why We Are Poor

By: Rudra Pandey

April 12, 2007

“A minister’s son killed someone but the court acquitted him. The minister was charged with bribery but he was set free because the court could not gather enough evidence to put him behind bars despite being caught red-handed. The chief secretary of a political party was convicted of murder and he served jail for three years but now he is back and is serving as the general secretary. A poor fellow was beaten to death because he stood up against a minister’s son who also happens to be the ring leader of a criminal gang.

Beauty pageants in Nepal: Do they worth any thing?

By: Sadhana Sharma

April 10, 2007

It is so true that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. If the attitude and perception is positive, we can see everything beautiful. We can find beauty in a pimply face and plump body. Beauty is totally an abstract terminology which can not be compared. Everyone in this world is beautiful.

Being a human being we can opt to make this beautiful world and peaceful. Our birth as a human being is so beautiful in itself that we do not have to have a stunning personality, photogenic face, ...

Optimist

By: Hitesh Karki

April 10, 2007

At 84, Girija takes seduction to a new level

By: Dhaniya

April 04, 2007

Who would have thought that at 84, Girija still has enough sex appeal to seduce all the major parties, including the excessively macho Maoists. But no doubt he does. After several rounds of courting at Baluwataar, Prachanda was fawning and Madav Nepal drooling. They rubbed their hands like lecherous men and nodded to everything our famous seducer said. "Finance? Sure." "Home? Umm… Sitaula's done a terrible job, but anything you want, darling." "And what's this here… Peace and Reconstruction? ...

Seeds of Disparity

By: Rajendra Keshari Pandey

March 27, 2007

Yesterday during a small gathering among our friends, the subject of gender issues was raised. We also discussed the catchwords of - INGOs and NGOs associated with these issues, because for them gender problems make money. By establishing an I/NGO it gives employment to the organisers, consultants and advisors, but rarely appears to benefit the target groups. In Nepal it has become a prestige and a fashion to establish an I/NGO. During the discussion our English friend stated a proverb to try ...

Equality between women and men and between different social groups correlates directly with the economic growth of a nation or a region. A touch of adolescence: A Valentine's Day special

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

February 14, 2007

I vaguely remember last Valentine’s Day. I was on my lunch break listening to this friend of mine lament about not being able to do anything about this girl that he had been eyeing for about six months now. The collective consensus was that this guy would just make his move and shut up already. I, on the other hand, who believed that this sort of thing was fit only for teenagers, would later learn how I naïve I was. How was I to know that I would fall for the very same person!

A Return to Panchayat?

By: Gopal Bahadur Ghale

February 12, 2007

A disquieting development in Nepali politics has been occurring extremely quietly, and it amazes me that no one has been talking about it. It is in clear violations of all democratic norms, yet even after we have gained democratic rights with a historic revolution, no one seems to care. I am talking about the interim constitution and the eight party’s suggestion that half of our parliamentarians be nominated, as opposed to being elected, reminiscent of the Panchayat era.

Why was that ...

The country has now entered into an interim period as the interim constitution has been promulgated.Through that interim constitution interim legislature has been set up with the representation of 330 lawmakers.

Diagnosing doctors

By: Mabi Singh

February 11, 2007

( A piece of humor Ashutosh Tiwari and Mabi Singh)

Doctors and long-distance bus drivers have much in common in Nepal. Both are responsible for other people's lives. Yet, both often fail in their duty. Just as our highways are littered with squashed men, women and children for whom the light at the end of the tunnel was that of an oncoming bus they failed to dodge, our hospital cabins and nursing home-rooms are filled with patients --overmedicated, over-ignored ...

Music is one of the greatest gifts given to man-kind. It has spread dramatically throughout the world and has joined every civilization throughout history. The songs that civilizations have sang, gossips through religion and then country, classic, rock, rap etc.
Music has evolved even faster then apes evolved into humans. It has changed ideals of many people and there are songs about basically everything out there. The songs can make us happy, sad, unsettled, and laugh; so much ...

Big, pink and loud. Unmistakably American. I met Josh in the transit lounge in Delhi. Josh, not his real name of course, is trying to sleep on the row of seats behind me. I can hear he is uncomfortable. I am too. The hand rests won’t fold and the backrest is too low. Josh curses and turns over one more time. And is finally quiet.

My recollection of an incident which occurred some months ago in Kathmandu is interesting and different. What I am writing here may not bother someone, but this is a fact and people should keep in mind. It was a cool evening when I was returning home from a stroll. Despite people try to show a yawning gap between yogis and scientists, I can find many similarities rather than differences. Science Vs. Religion

By: Akriti Panthi

For thousands of years we have been arguing about what to believe in science or religion. For scientists it’s always been god doesn’t exist there is no proof; for the other side it’s been you have lost faith. Is proof really needed to say god exists? Many have claimed that they have seen or heard god but when they explain it (it doesn't sound right) are they lying for attention or is it the seer truth? Do you believe in Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Chinese traditional religion, Buddhism, Darwinism, atheist, agnostic, etc.

Of course, this bike became a huge success. Naturally, all custom bikes built based on this design followed it verbatim, none more so than a little known Chinese company called Sinski. They even went so far as to leave the kick ...

Moral Values and Duties: Some thoughts

By: Amar Adhikari

January 05, 2007

First of all let me admit that I am neither an anthropologist nor an economist. However, one question that has always bothered me from the childhood why our country is poor and what could be done. This became my part time hobby, and I read many books I could lay my hands on. As a result, I came to some conclusions, and out of which some I tried to share on “Why our country is poor: Some thoughts”. After all, in order to put our country on right track we need to analyze and find out how we arrived at this abysmal situation.

Thanks to a few comments on my writing, I realize the necessity of providing supporting examples that religion and philosophy exert tremendous amount of influence in the building of moral values, which in turn serve the basis of justification for many people’s action. It is worth stressing that if these moral values confirm to daily duties, the resulting productivity is phenomenon. Industrial revolution was, in fact, the upshot of this confluence.

Addiction - Smoke when you see a hippo

By: Ritesh Khanal

January 04, 2007

Science always tries to define biological phenomena as if to isolate the scientific terminologies from the human body itself. An increase in the level of ‘x’ chemical will produce ‘y’ substance in the body, which produces an electric sensation in ‘z’ nerve. A decrease in the volume of that same chemical will cause drowsiness and nausea and a labrat gets addicted to chemical ‘x’. Something seems to be missing in these explanations, something that connects the chemicals, the sensations and the human being.

This new year eve,
I realized my heart growing cold,
with cynicism : an adult infection.

Trapped in this adult world,
so grey and so cold,

I longed for the old days,
when the sky is clear blue and grass is naïve green,
rainbows are purely colorful,
snails are innocently fascinating, and I am always cheerful.

Oh ! only if I could borrow a bit of this childhood heaven
in this new year 2007 !!

Do we value only what we struggle for?

By: Akriti Panthi

January 02, 2007

"That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly. It is dearness only which gives everything its value."
-Thomas Paine

Throughout history we have always been greedy; some say it’s a curse and others a gift but truly it is both because without it we wouldn’t be who we are. Maybe the world would be better or worse but we can only deal with what we have. For the British, French, and Spaniards it was land during the times of the American Revolution but, now for everyone in the world our greed is now money. If someone was throwing free money in the air in the middle of the streets; who wouldn’t be out there trying to get something free? Did we ever stop by to think how long the owner of the money took his time to earn all of that? I agree with Thomas Paine if we gain something without any effort of work it doesn’t mean that much to us if we did spend our time gaining what we have.

Top three visionary moves for New Nepal

By: Rudra Pandey

January 02, 2007

Last week I was in the tropical Hawaiian Islands with my family, for a winter getaway. The kinds of infrastructure development they have done really inspired me to write this quick note. Hawaii is America’s 50th state and is definitely the number #1 tourist destination for Americans and others visiting America. I could easily believe that after I saw its white sand beaches and amazing culture. What’s more is that there is the inviting Pacific right outside your front door. The people who live in Hawaii really rely on tourists and a lot of jobs there are tourist service related. This is because the state’s number one industry is tourism and the second is military related as it has 14 different military bases. Comparing Hawaii to the other tropical islands like Fiji, Mauritius, and many others, I can positively say that none of them have accomplished what Hawaii has. I think this is because of the visionary moves set by the democratically elected government. That’s why it is said that “American democracy is not good – but it’s the best in the world we have so far.” These leaders know how to set vision and move forward without worrying about little things. Leaders must trust others to get the little things done and launch the BIG visionary things to set the tone of the nation in the right direction.

Evil prevails

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

December 29, 2006

"You know who's gonna inherit the earth? Arms dealers- because everyone else is too busy fighting with each other."

The movie Lord of War is lucky enough to have managed its way into the hallowed list of my top ten favorite movies of all time. It is truly one of the best movies I have seen in a long, long time. The movie chronicles the life of Yuri Orlov, an international arms dealer (portrayed by Nicolas Cage). The character of Orlov is written extremely beautifully and can be described best with the word SOULLESS.

Why our country is poor? Some thoughts:

By: Amar Adhikari

December 29, 2006

This Website contain plethora of ideas with regard to developing our country. These ideas primarily revolve around exploiting “Infrastructure”?, “Education”? and “technology”?.

Undoubtedly, in sharp contrast to poor countries, the rich countries have abundant of universities, roads, bridges, electricity, hospitals etc. So, the solution to the poverty, at least at a very high level, is very intuitive: invest as much as possible in infrastructure, education and technology .As a result of this thinking, millions of dollars have been poured into not only in our country but also in other developing countries, in the form of donation, loan and charity, to enrich education and infrastructure.

Reports show a record of an incident of attacks on medical professionals each month in average in the last eight months after the success of April movement. Resolutions in New Year? Oh not again! But wait…!

By: Siris Bajracharya

December 27, 2006

I heard someone shouting, “Hey Kundan, isn’t this the same resolution that you had thought during previous New Year?” Huh! Is Kundan himself reading this statement? You may be finding some part of him in yourself as he had believed and had put a resolution that he would bring some change in his behavior last year.

Times of year, many of people are contemplating changes they will make in their behavior for the New Year. Many of us resolve to change some behavior that we believe will benefit us. The most common resolutions tend to be about losing weight, stopping smoking, cutting back on alcohol, being nicer, etc. Of course what is interesting about the tradition of making New Years Resolutions is the traditional expectation that we will quickly break those same resolutions in no time! Hmm… seems like you have done it many times. Yes, so had I! But not any more...

Embryonic Stem Cells yes or no?

By: Akriti Panthi

December 27, 2006

Embryonic Stem Cells
Background information:
A stem cell is a type of cell that can change into different cells throughout the body. There are two types of stem stems: adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. Adult stem cells are more commonly used because they are found easily throughout the body.

Is the use of embryonic stem cells worth the thought of killing a life? Could we be able to sacrifice one life to save someone else? Embryonic stem cells are cells that can be found in an early embryo. During the pregnancy the most amounts of these cells are found 4-5 days after the fertilization in a stage of pregnancy called a blastocyst. At that time there are around 50-150 stem cells helping the baby develop.

Holocaust Denial and the Issue of Free Speech

By: Amit Pyakurel

December 25, 2006

Iran recently organized a conference on denial of the Holocaust, inviting steadfast condemnation from the West. Many perceive Tehran's conference as hiding the gruesome "truth" about the Holocaust, the ghastly massacre of Jews by Nazi Germany and its allies prior to and during World War II. The massacre took place under the unjustifiable claim that the Jews were an "inferior" and "impure" race unworthy to coexist with the Aryans(Germans).

A day that you always pray

A box with many locks
Locks which are hard as blocks
These blocks are as sharp as a fox

Who are winners?

By: Rudra Pandey

December 25, 2006

I was watching the movie “Little Miss Sunshine” in flight from London to Boston. Movie was OK. But, I loved the definition of winners in the movie. The character of grandfather in the movie defines winners like this “those who are not afraid of losing and who try different things are true winners – it does not matter what the end result may be”. Very true – many people in the world do not want to try new or challenging things because they are afraid of losing or getting embarrassed. When one does not try or does not even participate, winning is not going to be for the person. After I heard the tag line, I turned the movie off because I did not need to watch the rest of the movie. Thousands of questions started to hit me. I felt like I got mantra for my own life. Why did I felt so? The definition of winners was not new to me? Why was the definition coming from the old character in the movie making me feel so much restless? Why was the definition challenging me even when I was accepting it whole heartedly? I had no clue of what was going on in mind.

Observing Christmas in Secular Nepal and me

By: Indra Dhoj Kshetri

December 25, 2006

Till May 18, 2006, Nepal was constitutionally ‘a Hindu Kingdom’. Many people interpreted the notion as Hindu Kingdom because more than eighty percent population followed Hinduism. So why Hindus enjoyed certain more privileges then the other religious people. For example, many Hindu festivals were declared national Holidays, including Dashain on which national holidays are declared for nearly half a month. (Nowadays, the period is reduced to ten days.) However, in recent years, when non-Hindu communities including indigenous protested, the notion was defined as a Hindu Kingdom because only a Hindu and an Aryan could become King.

Should schools start later in the day?

By: Akriti Panthi

December 24, 2006

“Without enough sleep, we all become tall two-year-olds,” said Jojo Jensen but not is it tall two-year olds or aging teenagers?
Should high schools start later in the day just to give teens a longer time to sleep? Many studies have been done saying that teens don’t ever get enough sleep and many car accidents occur of sleep deprivation. Teens feel more alert at a later time and using that most schools could get a better grade at school instead of trying to get some sleep in the class. If schools started later when a teen would be able to have their life; once they get home its homework, work, etc. Yes, high schools should start at a later time to let teens catch up on their sleep to get better grades, to stay out of sleep deprivation, and to keep them healthy.

December 23, 2006

With the recent breakthrough in communication, people are able to communicate with each other’s despite their location. This communications leads people to exchange of idea amongst people. One of these exchanges of idea is music. By being able to communicate, it influences people on what kind of genre of music should they listen to.
This has led people to blend culture and idea together and first by product of this is music. I, for one, am unsure of result and contemplate on whether to embrace the product or reject it.

Love

By: Akriti Panthi

December 22, 2006

A word that many people desire and yet so many walk away from it, one of the strongest words in the world that is abused over and over again. Do we even know what this word that many lust for means? So many definitions for this word but we all have our own way of explaining this word, but can we clearly define this word? We all feel love about something, someone, etc., but how can we tell if it’s love or not? The way we feel the way we would that describes this word is different, no one can love something the same as someone else.
As I walk through my day I hear myself at least once saying “I love you” or “I love that” but when I think about it I might not. I enjoy using that one word; do you? It makes me feel good to compliment something or someone. To give them a little bit of emotion and love. But as I way away I begin to think do I really mean it? Do I really love that person or thing very much that I would help them almost anyway possible? After actually thinking about it I got somewhere. I released that there are many different kinds of ways to love something or someone; so it works with all of those definitions.
What do you think of the word: love?

The gang war scene from Anchorman

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

December 22, 2006

How many of you have seen the movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy? Particularly, how many of you remember the "gang war" scene? I've seen the movie quite a few times and I find that scene so GOOD that I had to pay homage to it through a blog entry. It is the definition of HILARIOUS. It is an example of what makes the frat pack (Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn) movies so great. These guys are the geniuses of our times. Stand up and take notice, people.

As I was watching this movie, I realized something: I'm pretty easy to get along with. Here's the gist of it all: if you have seen and liked the following three movies, we can be friends forever!!
- Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
- Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
- Caligula

How cool is that!!

Honesty in management

By: Shreeya Shakya

December 22, 2006

The other day in the party I had sat down with our company president to have a little chit chat and during the course of our conversation, I had asked him, ‘Say Kevin.. Throughout your presentation, we heard a lot about clients, growth strategies and growth of the company, have you thought anything about employee benefit schemes in particular? ’ To my question, he had plainly answered, ‘No, I haven’t..’. My instant reaction was ‘Ohh!! I am a little disappointed..’. However in retrospect, lesser disappointed and more impressed was I by the man’s honesty. He very well could have spun a yarn, put forth an assortment of ‘company has ‘this’s and ‘that’s for you.’ But the fact that he was down right honest and told what was there, the truth, was what left me with an impression. With prophecies and dos and donts of management pouring out in galore virtually everywhere, as for me, one major aspect of managers and those being managed (whether they like it or not..) is ‘honesty’.

MARRIED TO THE MUSIC

By: Rajendra Keshari Pandey

December 22, 2006

Freedom has no barriers; it will not be and cannot be directed by anyone. It is in each and every individual and will always exist within them. A person is born free and when that life ends, they are again free from all bondage. There was a person in Kathmandu society, for whom even over a hundred years of complex, conservative and orthodox tradition could not restrain his instinct for self-liberation. Born, bred and trained in a so called aristocratic Brahmin family of that time, this gentleman stood aloof, far from the crowd, different and alone in his society. He followed his heart, not his head and we all know that to go against the traditional way at that time, was a Herculean task. But for a person like this, it was simply following his instincts for freedom of expression; he was a rebel out on his own, born free and ready to take on any challenge.

That One Road

By: Akriti Panthi

December 20, 2006

That One Road

You have one life to live
That one chance to survive
To accomplish your goals
How do you wanna roll?

To spend it in joy, work, or love?
Or all the above
That one road you may want to take
Hope your desire isn’t fake

For if you do follow that road
Pray that your road won’t explode
It could change more then you can dream
It’s a horrible scheme, everyone wants to be supreme

Our ambitions take action
And all we desire is that satisfaction
We forgot if we could be hurting someone, or something
After it’s too late, the guilt begins to ring

No matter how deep the wound goes
It’ll always be deep inside our clothes
Filling out hearts with tears and coil
Until our hearts begin to spoil

An illness called humanity

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

December 20, 2006

I suffer from an illness known as humanity
I am disposed to all its weaknesses and none of its strengths
I reach out in search of what is not
I desecrate all that is sacred within my reach

Two candles that clash glow inside me
I have an inborn belief in what can never be
Until I depart I shall always be in misery
I suffer from an illness known as humanity

I intend to befriend but end up shunning
I intend to love but end up loathing
I wallow in darkness although light I foresee
I suffer from an illness called humanity

CRITICAL THINKING

By: Upendra Pradhan

December 19, 2006

On a cold day at home I was browsing through the information HUB - the internet. I came across a phrase called "critical thinking" then I was thinking of our educational system and way we do your work and way we think about them. Just three four days back Rudra on his usual tour to different departments was asking us what direction should be given to students at NEC? At the moment, the things told to him was usual problems that we commonly talk about on our educational system like our educational system cannot keep pace with the market, no live projects practice etc etc. On reading about critical thinking I felt that one of the ground realities is that we normally do not practice critical thinking as students. You may be wondering what this Critical thinking is. There are many definitions of Critical thinking found on the Net.

Working on Instincts - Is it realistic?

By: Upendra Pradhan

December 19, 2006

People have tendency work on instincts. While making decisions this may lead to perception biases. This would not be good practice. The person would make decisions in a way that fits one's concept, viewpoints, attitudes, emotion. This would be illusion and escape from reality.

For instance,
See a person!!! You would have certain perception on the person with respect to their clothing, surrounding and people or things around him. If he/she were to be in a different situation you would have perceived the person differently. Once you get to know the person, talk to the person then socialize with the person your perception towards the person mostly differs from your first acquaintance and you are much for clear about person.

Registration of refugees, Will it solve the deadlock?

By: Kazi Gautam

December 19, 2006

Registration of refugees Will it solve the deadlock? Much anticipated re-registration of the Bhutanese refugees has eventually begun on November 15th bringing in it a ray of hope among the refugees waiting to see the permanent solution to the crisis. To my mind this can be viewed as having two objectives: to record the precise statistical data of the refugees and to find the actual data of those willing to opt for any one of the three options. However, the latter motive is not stated directly. Here I feel it necessary to stance on the process on hand. This is the only census and the registration conducted after 1990. So this move of the Nepal government and the UNHCR certainly wins plaudits. Nevertheless, how far it would be practical is a question in hand. Over forty thousand genuine Bhutanese have been sheltering in some parts of India and they are not registered in the refugee camps.

Dead man's Voice

By: Nishchal Shrestha

December 18, 2006

Featured ImageI used to be a dead man. Person needed to change hospital once every month. The reason was high chest pain and in result high blood pressure and respiratory problem. No one will hope a good life to a person who has this difficulty in life. So, I used to be called as a dead man. Who had no hope that would live any longer. This was already accepted by whole family who were already tired changing hospitals. I still have a pile of x-rays and a bundle of doctor’s prescriptions. Since I am only there son, my family tried every option even showing me to the Mata ji and other stuffs. But problem was increasing.

I had to be admitted at Heart Hospital (Shahid Gangalal) due to high heart pain and was unable to inhale. From some pain killer and some gastric medicine they sent me back to home. I was already taking medicine to control my high blood pressure which was prescribed by top doctor of Teaching Hospital after 24 hour pressure reading and other research. It was informed not to forget taking this medicine for one year, to control by fast heart beat and high pain.

Before it fell prey to your apparently warm light
Now I know I dwell under dark clouds and black sky
All because of you, die bhangeri die!

Probably being a programmer it is not so easy to understand the things right away as written and as different people have different thoughts. Most of the time for a programmers it becomes difficult to mange couple of lines of codes, so how can one imagine of managing 100 and even sometimes 10,000 of people.

I am sick of Morgan Freeman

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

December 13, 2006

Morgan Freeman is a great actor, and his greatness lies in the ease with which he can blend in with the surroundings in the movie. You never think "that's Morgan Freeman". That being said, I am sick of Morgan Freeman. Watching movies is an integral part of my lifestyle: not as a social event, but as a true movie lover. I watch movies to "watch the movie" and not to kill time. The movies I watch cover a long span of time. I have watched countless movies to date; and Freeman must have been in nearly half of these. He seems to be everywhere - in space AND in time! He has managed to invade every movie genre. I dare people to turn their television on, switch to a movie, and tell me that Freeman does not star in at least one of the movies that are playing.

Are you selfish?

By: Rudra Pandey

December 12, 2006

Try asking this to anyone or for that matter your own self and you know the answer always is “No.”, almost. You might even offend people if you ask this question directly but people always seem to find some kind of pleasure when it comes to passing on the comment all the time like “He/she is selfish. I do not want to hear his/her name. Bla, bla, bla…” Sometime people say this anecdotally and sometime they say with heart-breaking facts that make us real sad and angry. However the facts are always relative, just like they say, ‘ever since Einstein discovered the theory of relativity everything is so relative’. “Selfish” is a relative term and to some extent everyone in the world is selfish. Some go beyond the limit to promote self-interest at the cost of others and some do it just to protect one’s interest without hurting/exploiting others. The later remains very common and former is not too common. However it’s the hurting kinds that make the world disgusting place. What kind of selfishness can we accept and what we can’t? There is not defined boarder line. Acceptable level of selfishness changes by culture and places. But, there are selfish people in and every part of the world. For example, in America, if you ask for a car ride and thank the person at the end of the ride, you paid it back. The person who gave you car ride will not expect anything more from you. The story ends right there. In Nepal, if you ask for a car ride, whoever gives you the ride thinks that he/she did a big favor to you and next time you forget to mention about that, the fellow will cast you as selfish (I am sure there are many Nepalese exceptions to this.)

I also hope that those my brothers who are leading the Bhutanese Refugees’ movement since many years back will one day reach in the summit of their success and on the side of it I too will be supporting them. So dear brothers; it is positive to think of that we have to continue our march towards the destination. I have heard that there are our friends who are ready to fight against the guns and weapons. Yes I too support them. No man will be in the summit without any vandalism. Hope that one day we will definitely win. THANKS TO ONE AND ALL.

Bhutan Absconding from Repatriation

By: TP Mishra

December 10, 2006

The Bhutanese refugee impasse is progressively stepping towards complication. Gradually, it is attracting individual refugee and well-wishers into hot debate. This decade-and-half years of pending issue has been one of the biggest burdens for South Asia. Even the world community is unreceptive to the dilemma. The long stay in the unimproved camps under the plastic canopy with hesitant future has multiplied aggravations and dejections within individual refugee.

Vagina Monologues in Kathmandu

By: Dovan Rai

December 08, 2006

IMG_1694.jpg
“I say vagina because I want people to respond," says playwright Eve Ensler, creator of the hilarious, disturbing soliloquies in The Vagina Monologues. And respond they do--with horror, anger, censure, and sparks of wonder and pleasure.*

The Vagina Monologues is an Obie Award-winning episodic play based on interviews with over 200 women about their real memories and experiences ...

Work Smart vs. Work Hard

By: Rudra Pandey

December 07, 2006

People who can’t sweat usually have excuses of working smart instead of working hard. Output and time spent are usually directly proportional because in most of the work places people spend only 20% of their brain except for some intense issues. People who know how to sweat and work hard can address intense and complex issues utilizing 100% of their brain when required. I usually tell my daughter that one who has not passed stress test cannot handle complex issues no matter how smart the person may be. In other words, no matter how smart one works, working hard is essential to pass over the hump. I have not seen anyone reach the peak without sweating – hiking, a case in point. Smart ones always see more challenges and opportunities and never stop working. Smart people are ambitious too. Lack of ambition and determination makes us look for excuses for our non-performances and we fail to appreciate successful people who sweat to clear clogs from their brain.

LEARNING FROM JYAPUS

By: Rajendra Keshari Pandey

December 07, 2006

I do not know why I love this Newari Language so much. Somewhere, somehow deep inside me, maybe there exists a Newar. Fortunately or unfortunately, I do not belong to a Newari community, caste, creed or clan. But, I know I have never had any problems with the Newari community, its culture and their way of life. In truth, I believe that this is one of the most beautiful races in our country. Their art, craft, culture, tradition and enterprise skills are their main virtues. They are gifted people in their chosen fields and I would rate them as First Class citizens. However, there is an even better class than this, “The Jyapu”. They are the agricultural specialists of this community and we are forgetting the fact that they were once the best organic vegetable producers of Kathmandu Valley. There is now a trend towards organic vegetables in the western world and if you care to verify this, please go to some of the organic markets held in the valley. Most of the customers are Khaires not locals. Let us not forget then, who is teaching our farmers how to sprinkle chemical fertilizers and so spoil their fields in a few years time? Those same people opt for organic vegetables for their own tables! This is a paradox.

Mental soundtrack

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

December 06, 2006

What I call the mental soundtrack is something everyone has. Nobody in the world, no matter what they claim, can still their mind. There will always be some thought, deep or trivial, that occupies the mind. When there isn't, the mental soundtrack comes into play. It will be a song that keeps repeating itself over and over again for some time. Then, the song changes and you're stuck with the new one for some more.

Now, as a guy that passionately listens to true classic rock and metal of the seventies and eighties, I consider my musical taste to be of quite high a calibre. But is that what makes up my mental soundtrack? Sadly not.

Most of the time, my mental soundtrack will be a really really stupid song I picked up on TV or some place else, or even worse: a really, really bad advertisement jingle. I once got stuck with this really bad jingle for two straight months! It is painful.

I wonder if other people have experienced this. In any case, it is a vile thing and one more reason in favour of the apocalypse.

The world must end. NOW!

Memories of Days Past - III

By: Rudra Pandey

December 04, 2006

First four years of my Kathmandu stay was in my aunt’s (Phupu’s) house in Dilli Bazar. During the final days of grade five, my aunt’s husband passed away and it was difficult time for all of us. As per brahmin tradition we were not supposed to see her until after a year of her husband’s death. I hated the practice for two reasons. First, I did not know where to stay during the sixth grade. Second, I wanted to be with my aunt when she was really alone and she needed us the most. Anyway, nothing I could do against the several generations long practice.

I like… (Excerpt from my diary)

By: Amit

December 04, 2006

"I would like to do things on my own. I like to relax. I cannot control the tough emotions. I like to live life naturally. I want to live an ordinary life. I do not wish to be the millionaire and live the bustling life. I like to live the serene life. I would love to live like an ordinary person with no fear of anything. Just live as the life goes. What's the point in working 14 hours a day? What's the point worrying too much about the future? What's the point going abroad and keep traveling? What's the point achieving a doctorate degree?

Definition of freedom

By: Ankur Panthi

December 04, 2006

Lately in the media, I have heard the word freedom countless time. Nevertheless, what does this word mean to us people? People loosely use this word with out understanding the actual meaning of the word. Is it perhaps that people do not know what freedom means? Furthermore, I believe the media and press is miss using the word freedom. Freedom is rather important gift that we as human beings conceal in us but everyday the word freedom is loosely tossed around with no meaning at all.

Snow

By: Akriti Panthi

December 03, 2006

“Ahhh it’s snowing” I shout
School’s out without a doubt
As I scream and shout
I race to the door to get out

The smiles, the grins, the joy
As I rush out to enjoy
That one flake of snow
O how I want to go

Outside in that blanket of white
Those flakes are always so bright
Right when I wake up I jump to my window
And peak out hoping to shout hoooowow

Every one is in search of Opportunity…

By: Binaya Neupane

December 03, 2006

DV,PR, WORK PERMIT, if you think from one dimension, is one of the easy and luckiest ways to get the visa of the United States, Australia/Canada and UK and so on and from another the precious time and opportunity to earn money. Both ways it creates the opportunity, for Nepalese, so what is harm in it?

As per the best of my understanding of Nepalese life and society, almost every Nepali dreams for USA and Europe rather than Asia, why? Is that the country they are dreaming have more opportunity?

The stench of reality

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

November 30, 2006

This reality reeks of filth. Not that I'm aware of any other reality that does not. But rationale forces me to realize that there cannot be a singular reality. Just the fact that I am able to conceive of the idea rightly justifies it. And it is rationale that dictates to me that even though my existence is confined to this reality; I, as I truly am, span all realities. This does not apply to my physical state, my mind or consciousness nor my spirit - but something else that I am unable to conceive of due to the very fact that my existence is confined to this reality.

Standardizing culture

By: heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

November 29, 2006

In my field of study and work, standards play a big role. A lot of what could otherwise be chaos has been delicately held together by standards and protocols. As miraculous as it sounds, a big bunch of people actually agreed to follow a common path!!

Now, if you put two people in a room, conflict is bound to arise. It is inevitable and, as a matter of fact, a microcosm of all the conflict across the globe today. Even though wisemen of our time will say that ultimately it's all about the money or the power; one cannot discount the fact that culture has a lot to do with it. I dare to go as far as to say that the very thing that makes the human race so diverse is the cause for all of its conflict.
