As I reach the corner of the street in between Gaushala and Sifal, the road next to the small forest opposite Pashupati, a diminutive figure whose personality seems to have been emboldened by the fact that he had a red star on his cap and wore fatigues, asks me to stop. He is inside an Indian SUV.

Last week I got an email from Bishal. I had already received a clue about the mail from Saurav while chatting the day before. Well, the topic was not any new. We had been discussing such topics during college times. The topic is still under discussion and still could not conclude anywhere. It seems we need more thoughts and more brainstorming. Where else can I expect such thoughts, except this forum? Therefore I am posting it here.

It was a great experience to see college friends after 25 years. It was hard to believe that 25 years had passed since we last hung around together at the Tri-Chandra campus area. We were 60 plus students in physical group (the group of students who joined college to prepare for engineering school). We were there as either our parents wanted us to be an engineer, or we were dreaming to become an engineer. All of us had some dreams and dreams kept changing everyday as we had to go through ...

In 1996A.D. Nepal saw the emergence of a new clique of people with a new set of rules and ideas to bring back so called reforms in different sectors. Well the idea was great had it not been for the weapons. How Gandhi helped in bringing back the independence in India is an exemplary achievement, which was spearheaded with a common theme of fight through non-violence. May be that was possible (in our context) or might have been the other way, but once you make a plan that is going to involve the ...

It was just one of those lousy days, when you sit and watch the same stupid old movie you watched over a dozen times before and still have the patience to watch it all over again, scene by scene with an intense curiosity of what’s gonna happen next, when you already know what it is. Just those days, when after watching the movie, you switch channels on TV in an infinite loop! 1..2..3..4..55..56..1..2..3..4..55…56. I was desperately hunting for something to really amuse me. What if a wise decision of sharing it, make things even worse. You feel like you are alone. You are driven to a conclusion “No I can’t cope up with the situation; I have had enough of this life". There is no one in this world who is there to say “I am with you”. For the time being, you feel as if this ...

Essentially, QC plays one big part in software development cycle, from beginning to end. Once blue print of software architecture is prepared, use cases are drawn and from use case, test cases are prepared. Use cases are prepared to optimize the chances of capturing the possible bugs. And finally tester starts the test and blah blah... This sounds pretty straight huh. Not so straight. Why? A software company needs many software testers. A tester requires an overall technical knowledge. A poor ...

If this is not true, I'll be glad to remove this entry.

Concept stimulated by the deep seated sense of insecurity and catalyzed by the sense of defeat against thousands of unsolved questions. God has been a perfect scapegoat. Most of the religions are based on superstition. They actually promote sin. Someone will come and protect you from your sin if you worship him. Isn’t that ...

Following the winter break of fifty days, regular classes of grade ten resumed in full swing and with it crept in the haunting fear of S.L.C. I wanted to pass S.L.C. in first division, at least. At that time, I could not dream of anything beyond S.L.C - I had no idea of what I would be studying a year from then and which college I would be attending.

I am a fan of Cartoons, proverbs and parables; in very simple ways they can express the bigger picture. Rajesh K.C.’s cartoon published in the Kantipur Daily was a beautiful example. There he refers to the inefficiency of Nepal Telecommunications distribution of pre-paid mobile facilities to the public, by depicting “Door Sanchar” as “Jhoor Sanchar” = Bad Communication. We also discussed the catchwords of - INGOs and NGOs associated with these issues, because for them gender problems make money. By establishing an I/NGO it gives employment to the organisers, consultants and advisors, but rarely appears to benefit the target groups. In Nepal it has become a prestige and a fashion to establish an I/NGO. During the discussion our English friend stated a proverb to try ...

My heart stopped beating, I couldn’t feel
Last thing I heard was “are you ok there”
After that nothing was clear
Mum…. I am not breathing

Mum I think am going numb
The sirens and horns are pinching me
I smell my blood although I can’t see
I wish I could spend the final moments in your lap
Before I leave you for the eternal nap
I am sorry to leave you so early

Groping for the lighter under the quilt with both hands, he smiled as he remembered how he had promised to himself the previous year that he would never smoke again. He finally ...

First of all let me admit that I am neither an anthropologist nor an economist. However, one question that has always bothered me from the childhood why our country is poor and what could be done. This became my part time hobby, and I read many books I could lay my hands on. As a result, I came to some conclusions, and out of which some I tried to share on “Why our country is poor: Some thoughts”. After all, in order to put our country on right track we need to analyze and find out how we arrived at this abysmal situation.
Thanks to a few comments on my writing, I realize the necessity of providing supporting examples that religion and philosophy exert tremendous amount of influence in the building of moral values, which in turn serve the basis of justification for many people’s action. It is worth stressing that if these moral values confirm to daily duties, the resulting productivity is phenomenon. Industrial revolution was, in fact, the upshot of this confluence.

Science always tries to define biological phenomena as if to isolate the scientific terminologies from the human body itself. An increase in the level of ‘x’ chemical will produce ‘y’ substance in the body, which produces an electric sensation in ‘z’ nerve. A decrease in the volume of that same chemical will cause drowsiness and nausea and a labrat gets addicted to chemical ‘x’. Something seems to be missing in these explanations, something that connects the chemicals, the sensations and the human being.

This new year eve,
I realized my heart growing cold,
with cynicism : an adult infection.
Trapped in this adult world,
so grey and so cold,
I longed for the old days,
when the sky is clear blue and grass is naïve green,
rainbows are purely colorful,
snails are innocently fascinating, and I am always cheerful.
Oh ! only if I could borrow a bit of this childhood heaven
in this new year 2007 !!

Fare..thee..well Suddenly an overheard phrase stroke my grey cells, it was said by my friend just a few moments ago while we were in tea break. I wonder, how the climate affects a person’s mind and the thoughts. It’s a gloomy day today out here in Kathmandu, for some it may be a romantic day, for some it may be a dull day and for some it may be a hectic day :could have never took a chance to think about the climate. Weather becomes a real hot topic while tea gathering, and its natural phenomenon.

"That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly. It is dearness only which gives everything its value."
-Thomas Paine
Throughout history we have always been greedy; some say it’s a curse and others a gift but truly it is both because without it we wouldn’t be who we are. Maybe the world would be better or worse but we can only deal with what we have. For the British, French, and Spaniards it was land during the times of the American Revolution but, now for everyone in the world our greed is now money. If someone was throwing free money in the air in the middle of the streets; who wouldn’t be out there trying to get something free? Did we ever stop by to think how long the owner of the money took his time to earn all of that? I agree with Thomas Paine if we gain something without any effort of work it doesn’t mean that much to us if we did spend our time gaining what we have.

Last week I was in the tropical Hawaiian Islands with my family, for a winter getaway. The kinds of infrastructure development they have done really inspired me to write this quick note. Hawaii is America’s 50th state and is definitely the number #1 tourist destination for Americans and others visiting America. I could easily believe that after I saw its white sand beaches and amazing culture. What’s more is that there is the inviting Pacific right outside your front door. The people who live in Hawaii really rely on tourists and a lot of jobs there are tourist service related. This is because the state’s number one industry is tourism and the second is military related as it has 14 different military bases. Comparing Hawaii to the other tropical islands like Fiji, Mauritius, and many others, I can positively say that none of them have accomplished what Hawaii has. I think this is because of the visionary moves set by the democratically elected government. That’s why it is said that “American democracy is not good – but it’s the best in the world we have so far.” These leaders know how to set vision and move forward without worrying about little things. Leaders must trust others to get the little things done and launch the BIG visionary things to set the tone of the nation in the right direction.

"You know who's gonna inherit the earth? Arms dealers- because everyone else is too busy fighting with each other."
The movie Lord of War is lucky enough to have managed its way into the hallowed list of my top ten favorite movies of all time. It is truly one of the best movies I have seen in a long, long time. The movie chronicles the life of Yuri Orlov, an international arms dealer (portrayed by Nicolas Cage). The character of Orlov is written extremely beautifully and can be described best with the word SOULLESS.

This Website contain plethora of ideas with regard to developing our country. These ideas primarily revolve around exploiting “Infrastructure”?, “Education”? and “technology”?.
Undoubtedly, in sharp contrast to poor countries, the rich countries have abundant of universities, roads, bridges, electricity, hospitals etc. So, the solution to the poverty, at least at a very high level, is very intuitive: invest as much as possible in infrastructure, education and technology .As a result of this thinking, millions of dollars have been poured into not only in our country but also in other developing countries, in the form of donation, loan and charity, to enrich education and infrastructure.

I heard someone shouting, “Hey Kundan, isn’t this the same resolution that you had thought during previous New Year?” Huh! Is Kundan himself reading this statement? You may be finding some part of him in yourself as he had believed and had put a resolution that he would bring some change in his behavior last year.
Times of year, many of people are contemplating changes they will make in their behavior for the New Year. Many of us resolve to change some behavior that we believe will benefit us. The most common resolutions tend to be about losing weight, stopping smoking, cutting back on alcohol, being nicer, etc. Of course what is interesting about the tradition of making New Years Resolutions is the traditional expectation that we will quickly break those same resolutions in no time! Hmm… seems like you have done it many times. Yes, so had I! But not any more...

Embryonic Stem Cells
Background information:
A stem cell is a type of cell that can change into different cells throughout the body. There are two types of stem stems: adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. Adult stem cells are more commonly used because they are found easily throughout the body.
Is the use of embryonic stem cells worth the thought of killing a life? Could we be able to sacrifice one life to save someone else? Embryonic stem cells are cells that can be found in an early embryo. During the pregnancy the most amounts of these cells are found 4-5 days after the fertilization in a stage of pregnancy called a blastocyst. At that time there are around 50-150 stem cells helping the baby develop.

I was watching the movie “Little Miss Sunshine” in flight from London to Boston. Movie was OK. But, I loved the definition of winners in the movie. The character of grandfather in the movie defines winners like this “those who are not afraid of losing and who try different things are true winners – it does not matter what the end result may be”. Very true – many people in the world do not want to try new or challenging things because they are afraid of losing or getting embarrassed. When one does not try or does not even participate, winning is not going to be for the person. After I heard the tag line, I turned the movie off because I did not need to watch the rest of the movie. Thousands of questions started to hit me. I felt like I got mantra for my own life. Why did I felt so? The definition of winners was not new to me? Why was the definition coming from the old character in the movie making me feel so much restless? Why was the definition challenging me even when I was accepting it whole heartedly? I had no clue of what was going on in mind.

Till May 18, 2006, Nepal was constitutionally ‘a Hindu Kingdom’. Many people interpreted the notion as Hindu Kingdom because more than eighty percent population followed Hinduism. So why Hindus enjoyed certain more privileges then the other religious people. For example, many Hindu festivals were declared national Holidays, including Dashain on which national holidays are declared for nearly half a month. (Nowadays, the period is reduced to ten days.) However, in recent years, when non-Hindu communities including indigenous protested, the notion was defined as a Hindu Kingdom because only a Hindu and an Aryan could become King.

“Without enough sleep, we all become tall two-year-olds,” said Jojo Jensen but not is it tall two-year olds or aging teenagers?
Should high schools start later in the day just to give teens a longer time to sleep? Many studies have been done saying that teens don’t ever get enough sleep and many car accidents occur of sleep deprivation. Teens feel more alert at a later time and using that most schools could get a better grade at school instead of trying to get some sleep in the class. If schools started later when a teen would be able to have their life; once they get home its homework, work, etc. Yes, high schools should start at a later time to let teens catch up on their sleep to get better grades, to stay out of sleep deprivation, and to keep them healthy.

This has led people to blend culture and idea together and first by product of this is music. I, for one, am unsure of result and contemplate on whether to embrace the product or reject it.

A word that many people desire and yet so many walk away from it, one of the strongest words in the world that is abused over and over again. Do we even know what this word that many lust for means? So many definitions for this word but we all have our own way of explaining this word, but can we clearly define this word? We all feel love about something, someone, etc., but how can we tell if it’s love or not? The way we feel the way we would that describes this word is different, no one can love something the same as someone else.
As I walk through my day I hear myself at least once saying “I love you” or “I love that” but when I think about it I might not. I enjoy using that one word; do you? It makes me feel good to compliment something or someone. To give them a little bit of emotion and love. But as I way away I begin to think do I really mean it? Do I really love that person or thing very much that I would help them almost anyway possible? After actually thinking about it I got somewhere. I released that there are many different kinds of ways to love something or someone; so it works with all of those definitions.
What do you think of the word: love?

I've seen the movie quite a few times and I find that scene so GOOD that I had to pay homage to it through a blog entry. It is the definition of HILARIOUS. It is an example of what makes the frat pack (Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn) movies so great. These guys are the geniuses of our times. Stand up and take notice, people.
As I was watching this movie, I realized something: I'm pretty easy to get along with. Here's the gist of it all: if you have seen and liked the following three movies, we can be friends forever!!
- Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
- Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
- Caligula

The other day in the party I had sat down with our company president to have a little chit chat and during the course of our conversation, I had asked him, ‘Say Kevin.. Throughout your presentation, we heard a lot about clients, growth strategies and growth of the company, have you thought anything about employee benefit schemes in particular? ’ To my question, he had plainly answered, ‘No, I haven’t..’. My instant reaction was ‘Ohh!! I am a little disappointed..’. However in retrospect, lesser disappointed and more impressed was I by the man’s honesty. He very well could have spun a yarn, put forth an assortment of ‘company has ‘this’s and ‘that’s for you.’ But the fact that he was down right honest and told what was there, the truth, was what left me with an impression. With prophecies and dos and donts of management pouring out in galore virtually everywhere, as for me, one major aspect of managers and those being managed (whether they like it or not..) is ‘honesty’.

Freedom has no barriers; it will not be and cannot be directed by anyone. It is in each and every individual and will always exist within them. A person is born free and when that life ends, they are again free from all bondage. There was a person in Kathmandu society, for whom even over a hundred years of complex, conservative and orthodox tradition could not restrain his instinct for self-liberation. Born, bred and trained in a so called aristocratic Brahmin family of that time, this gentleman stood aloof, far from the crowd, different and alone in his society. He followed his heart, not his head and we all know that to go against the traditional way at that time, was a Herculean task. But for a person like this, it was simply following his instincts for freedom of expression; he was a rebel out on his own, born free and ready to take on any challenge.

That One Road
You have one life to live
That one chance to survive
To accomplish your goals
How do you wanna roll?
To spend it in joy, work, or love?
Or all the above
That one road you may want to take
Hope your desire isn’t fake
For if you do follow that road
Pray that your road won’t explode
It could change more then you can dream
It’s a horrible scheme, everyone wants to be supreme
Our ambitions take action
And all we desire is that satisfaction
We forgot if we could be hurting someone, or something
After it’s too late, the guilt begins to ring
No matter how deep the wound goes
It’ll always be deep inside our clothes
Filling out hearts with tears and coil
Until our hearts begin to spoil

On a cold day at home I was browsing through the information HUB - the internet. I came across a phrase called "critical thinking" then I was thinking of our educational system and way we do your work and way we think about them. Just three four days back Rudra on his usual tour to different departments was asking us what direction should be given to students at NEC? At the moment, the things told to him was usual problems that we commonly talk about on our educational system like our educational system cannot keep pace with the market, no live projects practice etc etc. On reading about critical thinking I felt that one of the ground realities is that we normally do not practice critical thinking as students. You may be wondering what this Critical thinking is. There are many definitions of Critical thinking found on the Net.

People have tendency work on instincts. While making decisions this may lead to perception biases. This would not be good practice. The person would make decisions in a way that fits one's concept, viewpoints, attitudes, emotion. This would be illusion and escape from reality.
For instance,
See a person!!! You would have certain perception on the person with respect to their clothing, surrounding and people or things around him. If he/she were to be in a different situation you would have perceived the person differently. Once you get to know the person, talk to the person then socialize with the person your perception towards the person mostly differs from your first acquaintance and you are much for clear about person.
An old man has just arrived the town
feeling lost, feeling down

and sings of the pain that he has found
lines of age carves his face
the tired mind has lost its grace
worn out by time, eroded by fate
he awaits patiently for his final bait

Registration of refugees Will it solve the deadlock? Much anticipated re-registration of the Bhutanese refugees has eventually begun on November 15th bringing in it a ray of hope among the refugees waiting to see the permanent solution to the crisis. To my mind this can be viewed as having two objectives: to record the precise statistical data of the refugees and to find the actual data of those willing to opt for any one of the three options. However, the latter motive is not stated directly. Here I feel it necessary to stance on the process on hand. This is the only census and the registration conducted after 1990. So this move of the Nepal government and the UNHCR certainly wins plaudits. Nevertheless, how far it would be practical is a question in hand. Over forty thousand genuine Bhutanese have been sheltering in some parts of India and they are not registered in the refugee camps.

No one will hope a good life to a person who has this difficulty in life. So, I used to be called as a dead man. Who had no hope that would live any longer. This was already accepted by whole family who were already tired changing hospitals. I still have a pile of x-rays and a bundle of doctor’s prescriptions. Since I am only there son, my family tried every option even showing me to the Mata ji and other stuffs. But problem was increasing.
I had to be admitted at Heart Hospital (Shahid Gangalal) due to high heart pain and was unable to inhale. From some pain killer and some gastric medicine they sent me back to home. I was already taking medicine to control my high blood pressure which was prescribed by top doctor of Teaching Hospital after 24 hour pressure reading and other research. It was informed not to forget taking this medicine for one year, to control by fast heart beat and high pain.

That being said, I am sick of Morgan Freeman. Watching movies is an integral part of my lifestyle: not as a social event, but as a true movie lover. I watch movies to "watch the movie" and not to kill time. The movies I watch cover a long span of time. I have watched countless movies to date; and Freeman must have been in nearly half of these. He seems to be everywhere - in space AND in time! He has managed to invade every movie genre. I dare people to turn their television on, switch to a movie, and tell me that Freeman does not star in at least one of the movies that are playing.

Try asking this to anyone or for that matter your own self and you know the answer always is “No.”, almost. You might even offend people if you ask this question directly but people always seem to find some kind of pleasure when it comes to passing on the comment all the time like “He/she is selfish. I do not want to hear his/her name. Bla, bla, bla…” Sometime people say this anecdotally and sometime they say with heart-breaking facts that make us real sad and angry. However the facts are always relative, just like they say, ‘ever since Einstein discovered the theory of relativity everything is so relative’. “Selfish” is a relative term and to some extent everyone in the world is selfish. Some go beyond the limit to promote self-interest at the cost of others and some do it just to protect one’s interest without hurting/exploiting others. The later remains very common and former is not too common. However it’s the hurting kinds that make the world disgusting place. What kind of selfishness can we accept and what we can’t? There is not defined boarder line. Acceptable level of selfishness changes by culture and places. But, there are selfish people in and every part of the world. For example, in America, if you ask for a car ride and thank the person at the end of the ride, you paid it back. The person who gave you car ride will not expect anything more from you. The story ends right there. In Nepal, if you ask for a car ride, whoever gives you the ride thinks that he/she did a big favor to you and next time you forget to mention about that, the fellow will cast you as selfish (I am sure there are many Nepalese exceptions to this.)

People who can’t sweat usually have excuses of working smart instead of working hard. Output and time spent are usually directly proportional because in most of the work places people spend only 20% of their brain except for some intense issues. People who know how to sweat and work hard can address intense and complex issues utilizing 100% of their brain when required. I usually tell my daughter that one who has not passed stress test cannot handle complex issues no matter how smart the person may be. In other words, no matter how smart one works, working hard is essential to pass over the hump. I have not seen anyone reach the peak without sweating – hiking, a case in point. Smart ones always see more challenges and opportunities and never stop working. Smart people are ambitious too. Lack of ambition and determination makes us look for excuses for our non-performances and we fail to appreciate successful people who sweat to clear clogs from their brain.

I do not know why I love this Newari Language so much. Somewhere, somehow deep inside me, maybe there exists a Newar. Fortunately or unfortunately, I do not belong to a Newari community, caste, creed or clan. But, I know I have never had any problems with the Newari community, its culture and their way of life. In truth, I believe that this is one of the most beautiful races in our country. Their art, craft, culture, tradition and enterprise skills are their main virtues. They are gifted people in their chosen fields and I would rate them as First Class citizens. However, there is an even better class than this, “The Jyapu”. They are the agricultural specialists of this community and we are forgetting the fact that they were once the best organic vegetable producers of Kathmandu Valley. There is now a trend towards organic vegetables in the western world and if you care to verify this, please go to some of the organic markets held in the valley. Most of the customers are Khaires not locals. Let us not forget then, who is teaching our farmers how to sprinkle chemical fertilizers and so spoil their fields in a few years time? Those same people opt for organic vegetables for their own tables! This is a paradox.

What I call the mental soundtrack is something everyone has. Nobody in the world, no matter what they claim, can still their mind. There will always be some thought, deep or trivial, that occupies the mind. When there isn't, the mental soundtrack comes into play. It will be a song that keeps repeating itself over and over again for some time. Then, the song changes and you're stuck with the new one for some more.
Now, as a guy that passionately listens to true classic rock and metal of the seventies and eighties, I consider my musical taste to be of quite high a calibre. But is that what makes up my mental soundtrack? Sadly not.
Most of the time, my mental soundtrack will be a really really stupid song I picked up on TV or some place else, or even worse: a really, really bad advertisement jingle. I once got stuck with this really bad jingle for two straight months! It is painful.
I wonder if other people have experienced this. In any case, it is a vile thing and one more reason in favour of the apocalypse.
The world must end. NOW!

As per brahmin tradition we were not supposed to see her until after a year of her husband’s death. I hated the practice for two reasons. First, I did not know where to stay during the sixth grade. Second, I wanted to be with my aunt when she was really alone and she needed us the most. Anyway, nothing I could do against the several generations long practice.

Lately in the media, I have heard the word freedom countless time. Nevertheless, what does this word mean to us people? People loosely use this word with out understanding the actual meaning of the word. Is it perhaps that people do not know what freedom means? Furthermore, I believe the media and press is miss using the word freedom. Freedom is rather important gift that we as human beings conceal in us but everyday the word freedom is loosely tossed around with no meaning at all.

“Ahhh it’s snowing” I shout
School’s out without a doubt
As I scream and shout
I race to the door to get out
The smiles, the grins, the joy
As I rush out to enjoy
That one flake of snow
O how I want to go
Outside in that blanket of white
Those flakes are always so bright
Right when I wake up I jump to my window
And peak out hoping to shout hoooowow

DV,PR, WORK PERMIT, if you think from one dimension, is one of the easy and luckiest ways to get the visa of the United States, Australia/Canada and UK and so on and from another the precious time and opportunity to earn money. Both ways it creates the opportunity, for Nepalese, so what is harm in it?
As per the best of my understanding of Nepalese life and society, almost every Nepali dreams for USA and Europe rather than Asia, why? Is that the country they are dreaming have more opportunity?Times Viewed Continue | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

This reality reeks of filth. Not that I'm aware of any other reality that does not. But rationale forces me to realize that there cannot be a singular reality. Just the fact that I am able to conceive of the idea rightly justifies it. And it is rationale that dictates to me that even though my existence is confined to this reality; I, as I truly am, span all realities. This does not apply to my physical state, my mind or consciousness nor my spirit - but something else that I am unable to conceive of due to the very fact that my existence is confined to this reality.

In my field of study and work, standards play a big role. A lot of what could otherwise be chaos has been delicately held together by standards and protocols. As miraculous as it sounds, a big bunch of people actually agreed to follow a common path!!
Now, if you put two people in a room, conflict is bound to arise. It is inevitable and, as a matter of fact, a microcosm of all the conflict across the globe today. Even though wisemen of our time will say that ultimately it's all about the money or the power; one cannot discount the fact that culture has a lot to do with it. I dare to go as far as to say that the very thing that makes the human race so diverse is the cause for all of its conflict.

It was the seventh day of Dashami (the greatest Hindu festival), the day preceding the sacrifice of animals to Durga, the Goddess of power. The incessant rains had stopped and the sky was partly clear with patches of black clouds hovering around, signalling for the rains still to come. Among the clouds peeked the moon gaining its full form day by day for the coming full moon day. The entire village slept in serenity. The bamboo leaves swayed to the light breeze and bats could be seen moving stealthily in search of prey. An owl was hooting in the far horizon. The banks of river Khando was dry and the sands seemed silvery with the partial moonlight. The recent floods had brought more alluvial soil and the banks had widened, the sands had got a washing. A crab could be seen crawling towards the receding water.

No form of governance thought up by man is really any good. The much hyped democracy is an unachievable ideal at best. In which of today's so-called democracies do the people actually hold the strings? A democratic system is like a fragile piece of machinery held together by millions of loose nuts and bolts, and is doomed to shatter. Sure, democracy would work perfectly in a world where all men thought well of each other. But in such a world, who's to say any other system wouldn't work equally well?
Then you have dictatorships and monarchies which we can rule out just by pure reason and rational logic. Communism and fascism are oppressionist systems and have no place in a sane world. Since religion itself is evil by nature, any form of governance associated with religion is naturally evil. On the economic front, capitalism does lead to progress but tramples too many on the way. Socialism is another unachievable ideal and history is witness to how every state that has tried it out has failed to stick to its ideals, either being unable to sustain itself or turning into hardcore communism. Then there is the notion of "socialist democracy" – two unachievable ideals in one – need I say more?

Quite impressed with the first issue of ‘Y!’, a new Nepali youth magazine, I was eagerly awaiting for the second issue, which I found better.
Y! seemed to come with a serious purpose. It was reflected in the first issue in it’s bold cover design(which caught my eyes first), carefully planned content and intellectually stimulating articles.
The average ‘I hate politics’ youth too have now realized how vital politics is and how it impacts our studies, career, life and destiny.
Y! has cashed in the new burning interest of youth in politics and provided the youth with a platform for politics and activism.
Y! has actually fulfilled most of the requirements of a good youth magazine that I was looking for.
Bilingual medium is very practical and promoting Nepali literature is an appreciable approach.
By raising cultural and social awareness issues, it has carried the true essence of being youthful and modern.

My ancestors and my blood from the one place I treasure
Thinking, talking, and visiting that dear place is always a pleasure
From Mount Everest to Japha I go
Every piece of land I bow to
One of the smallest countries with one of the biggest disaster
Maoists running back and fro to master to master
The country folk all ran into one city
What a pity, a great fight wasn’t given
For houses, traditions became forgotten
Katmandu that city was trashed
Old buildings where smashed
New houses were built
Katmandu became the New York City but no one felt guilt
The government didn’t give a bit
All they did was sit, watched people die
Their children and all they did was sighed “bye”
My country, my home, and my people
Many prayed on the steeples
Thank the gods for now peace has rang
Nepal is another great place to hang
My ancestors and my blood from the one place I treasure
Thinking, talking, and visiting that dear place is always a pleasure
From Mount Everest to Japha I go
Every piece of land I bow to

Today, we together with other peoples of Nepal have fought and realized Loktantra. We envision Loktantra as the highest form of republican democracy of the people and by the people. As the word implicates Loktantra can have none above or bellow Lok or peoples and peoples’ world. A monarchy in any form or any other creed-based superstructure is out of question in Loktantra. We, the people of Nepal, are not praja of prajatantra but fully sovereign, responsible citizen of Nepal. The established norm of Lok accepts no exclusion or deprivation of citizens by gender, geographical region, ethnicity, religion, political or social orientation, physical or socioeconomic state or condition.

A close (national coach) source reveals that German Coach Gunter had been prescribing MEDICINES to Nepali athletes while training them and that the medicine intakes were supposed to be lessened as the SAF Games began.
But in an alternate take, what medicine was the German Coach prescribing? Is that even moral? Does Nepal Sports Council even know about this?
Also, it is now intelligent to ask if Gunter was testing a drug here in the Himalayan Nation. Germany thus seems to have used Nepali athletes, as previsouly did USA to our armed forced personnel.
Our athletes who have taken these drugs should be monitored for their health, side effects of the drugs. Gunter and Germany should publicly apologize for this and should pay in KIND as compensation.
Whatever that KIND is whether it be in support of medical aid etc, if there are any cases filed of side effects arised from using GUNTER DRUGS and for destorying Bhandari's career.

We are driven by God gifted instincts. We always react instantly to safety and then set habit to stay in comfort by keeping away from danger. One can rarely see a person not running away from a burning fire; one can rarely see a person not trying to cover up to warm up from cold and one can hardly see a person not eating when hungry. When we are hungry, we are forced to eat to survive and knowing that we need to eat, we eat regularly even if we do not feel hungry. If one does not do that then he is sick.

Time is time. No one can buy more time. You can buy more labor if you think it will help your team do more work faster, but that’s not the same thing as adding time to a project. The law of diminishing returns dictates that adding labor doesn’t exponentially increase productivity; in fact, at some point productivity can even go backwards.
For a real-life example, consider that two hardworking and experienced programmers working on a project. In order to finish the project on time, you decide to add one more programmer. Now the programmers may be completing the code more quickly, you decide to add six more programmers so that the project can be finished even sooner. You soon realize that although adding one programmer increased your productivity, adding six more only created chaos with creating a contentious environment. You reached the point of diminishing returns when you added six programmers.
Bottom line: You can’t build a house in a single day even with 100 people.

Business in the 21st century has been able to expand its boundaries overwhelmingly, regardless of the geographical constraints. The dream of an “international business community” has now slowly turned into reality. Today the world of business has been talking about expanding its boundaries globally. Now the competition is not only within the internal markets but among the external markets as well. Such a global perspective has introduced new opportunities as well as threats to the existing market. The internal markets of most underdeveloped and developing countries have been threatened to be wiped off against the breeze of global competition.

One very fine morning, my boss comes to me and says, “Here is what we want to do and here is how we are going to do it.....!” Sounds simple? This simple definition of strategy may sound effortless but it is not honestly simple because a lot of thought and work would go into the development of such business strategies.
A firm that attempts to sell a product or a service must have a plan and strategize its every move in order to sustain in the long run. The definition of strategy is: the guiding plan that integrates a firm’s major goals that has superior efficiency, quality, innovation, and customer responsiveness. A good business strategy will incorporate such concepts with a clear understanding of adopting the marketing concept, market opportunity analysis, and developing a sustainable competitive advantage. Strategies should be made keeping in mind of the fact that - all marketing begins with deprivation. A business is successful if we are able to understand the concept of fulfilling the deprived space.

The worst decision makers are killers. With one decision, they jeopardize other’s lives, and sometimes their own too. Best decision makers are those who save lives by helping people in crisis.
Everyone makes a few bad decisions once in a while. Some of us repeat them very often and some of us learn from it and avoid making such kind of decisions in the future. What happens after a bad decision? How can we avoid bad decision? Should we be too careful? Should we avoid making decision because of possible negative consequences? These questions always make me ponder. I have made a few bad decisions both in personal and professional lives. I still regret everyday about some of the decisions that I have made years back. I feel like “Oh god - how dumb I was?” I wish I could recall those decisions. Obviously, it is too late to recall as damage has already been done. I feel like hitting my forehead against the wall and screaming out loud – “why did I do so?”

I am tired of reading many books and listening to different discussions on management. "What is management? What managers do?" like questions, are not significant to me. This is similar to Nepalese politicians trying to define "What is democracy and what is Lok Tantra?. There are many problems and issues that are making everything stagnant. Even the things are worsening every minute that you are very aware about and you are trying to define what our democratic system’s name is. Opps...I can just say that I would have fired those people if I were authorized to. At least we engineers talk more on Why and How questions. To be honest, what I learnt from life without caring about management is much more than what I studied about it. So, it is better to focus on how things can be made better. I believe management quality is an inherent capability to some extent but it is more driven from interest and learning from every incidents that you experience or see in life. I just recalled a real story of a 20 yrs old girl. Here it goes...

If the rayamajhi Commission fails to recommend appropriate action against all the perpetrators inclusing King Gyanendra; history will not forgive them
The same happened what people didn’t want but expected. Ever in the history of Nepal, the Rayamajhi Commission formed to investigate the atrocities of the erstwhile Royal government was supposed to address people’s aspirations and recommend proper punishment against the perpetrators. Upon its formation, the commission members also made roars that anybody found guilty on suppressing the popular movement is brought to the book. The Commission Chairman Krishna Jung Rayamajhi himself said they will not spare even the King if found involved on suppressing popular movement and embezzling nation’s fund. King’s involvement was crystal clear as he was the chairman of the then Council of Ministers. And even a layman could not believe that any move of the then government was taken without his consent.

There isn’t any clear definition of management. This is something that evolved right from the time human beings existed. Only the way of managing things have changed. The human development was slow right from the medieval period to the 18th century. It really started picking up in the 20th century due to change in the management style.
From my past experience there are three tips I could give to be a part of a good management team.
1. Anyhow solve the puzzle, which could also mean getting from A to D without having to step into B and C.
2. If something needs to be done, just do it. Let others follow you rather than waiting for others to start
3. Think simple.

Empires are not built ‘as is’. They evolve from startups. But only a meager fraction of the startups make it up to the empirical formations.
As startups, it’s usually a bunch of people with an idea to stick to working for their own sake. People involved are mostly stakeholders and have a participatory role; their growth is directly proportional to that of the company. With the number of people in some lower 2 digits, there isn’t a high hierarchy of roles that separate personals involved. People are accessible. The faces are familiar, the workplace is habitual and there is positivity and optimism in the air.

It's lucky for me then that I read a lot of books and watch even more movies; and it's really, really lucky for me that I happened to have watched a classic by the name of Wall Street.

National flags represent their respective nations in the international arena. So why they are meant to be unique symbol and a value for a country. National flags usually have to have some patriotic meaning representing the country and her people for the betterment and patriotism.
Why don’t we begin with a discussion over our national flag i.e. National flag of Nepal? The national flag of Nepal is the one and only one non-rectangular national and official flags in the world. If we track back the history for the origin of non-rectangular, triangular flag then it says: The Nepal’s flag is a simplified combination of two single streamers from different branches of the previous rulers, the Rana dynasty who controlled Nepal from the mid-19th century until 1951. The Rana rulers were entitled "Shri Teen" and "Maharajahs".

No sooner the Maoist formally entered the peaceful mainstream; split has been seen with the UML. And division between these two parties may affect the future of the pact.

As the country seems overwhelmingly welcoming the historic deal between the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) government and the CPN Maoist, a split has been noticed among those signatories. Especially, the major Communist factions the Maoists and the UML are seen divided. And biases towards one another seem to surface. Especially, the UML seems to be dissatisfied with the post deal scenario. General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal has been attacked by his comrades and also from the ground level cadres for giving ‘more space’ to the Maoists. They have questioned if the Maoists had enough popularity or status to get equal seats with the UML in the interim legislature. Not only UML, but the Nepali Congress or other party people are also perplexed with this decision, especially Maoists’ position in the interim legislature. Their stance is that the Maoists haven’t so far been tested before the public and how could they get second position in the interim legislature followed by interim government.

Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2006 is out, and I guess we Nepalese can be glad that we haven’t done any worse than before. But then, we haven’t done any better either. Nepal still has a score of 2.5 (10 being the least corrupt) and ranks 121 out of 163 nations. Bangladesh and Pakistan fare worse than us in South Asia. Most of the countries worse off than us are ‘failed states’ and extremely poor countries with a bad track record of human right abuses (like Iraq, Myanmar, Haiti and Sudan). The ranking is done on the basis of how rampant the people perceive corruption to be in the country.

In Nepal, unemployment is increasing from every stratum. When the ceasefire came into effect, not only the Maoist and government armies have been staying away from fighting, perhaps, their political leadership has also got no meaningful job. Therefore, they have been busy staging political plays. It is strange that till today they have not been able to start any sorts of meaningful peace negotiations; rather they are spending time in teasing and testing each other. Perhaps, they were tired and thought to refresh a bit by organizing series of roundtables in a festive environment. These roundtables, at least, kept their workers, media persons, 'civil society' chieftains and several hundred onlookers busy. This became some sorts of political orchestra and the people participated in enthusiastically. Therefore, the negotiation exercises became no less than colorful Jatras (traditional public shows full of entertainment with a mix of singing, dancing and drumming).

Some of us are weaker

But why this arrogance?
Some are wealthier
Some are poorer
Still why show off?
You might be attractive
Or maybe not
But what is under your skin counts
So why be vain and brag?
You might be of one race
Or maybe of another gender
Then why this discrimination?
We all have our own abilities
And disabilities
So why this boasting?
We all have our own ways of life
Appreciate the things
That are different about your friends and relatives
Live in unity
Embrace uniqueness
If you are arrogant
You miss a part of life
You are so full of yourself
That you forget to live for others
You forget to make a change in the world
And die with a good deed to your name
Why…

This is a billion dollar question with no straight forward answer. If it had a straight forward answer, the world today would be a much better, safer, and desirable place. The answer is ambiguous and we get different answers from different people. Internally, every individual thinks he/she is a leader or at least has the capacity to be a leader if given a chance. Everyone has the desire to lead at some point in life. Some give up, while others continue to pursue till the last minute. If the answer to the question was clear, many would probably never try to be a leader following their self-assessment. I would like to try to search for an answer to this question. The answer is again my version – I am sure many of you may disagree with it or may appreciate it. There is no single quality that makes someone a leader. That would be like trying to simplify the answer by saying “someone with leadership quality is a leader.”

लेख्न सक्छु जस्तै कि: 'यो रात् भाँचिएको छ
अनि ती काँप्छन्, नीला, ती ताराहरु, टाढा ।'

9th September, 2006, 7 women either infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, have come all the way to capital from remote far western district of Doti to Kathmandu, voicing themselves in the media. This issue was just stirring for me. For Women in Nepal, it requires something more than courage to publicly declare their HIV status. "When you know you are on the verge, you automatically muster the confidence for your children. What else we had to lose?" say the courageous women.

With the prolonged “Summit Talks”, dark clouds of pessimism have prevailed the Nepali politics. The sooner conclusion of the “Summit Talks” with a consensus to end the decade long conflict is today’s much awaited issue. However, it has now been a cock and bull story. The people have been desperately waiting for the conclusion. And nobody can escape from the trust that it is high on the agenda of every individual. Of course, the ‘ceasefire’ called by the Maoists and the Govt. seems to have successfully abolished the violence, murders and many more other terrifying acts. However, people now have begun to feel insecure owing to the deadlocks in the talks between the Govt. and the Maoists.

The world politics has entered into a complex phase. Ethics and values have been disappearing. The lust for power has overshadowed major socio-political and economic issues. Strangely, religious, political or any other type of extremism has been playing the role of a driving force. The pseudo-religious Messiahs and elected or self-made emperors, who proclaim themselves as super democrats, have been littering the world. These litterbugs are responsible for unimaginable miseries, large-scale destructions and colossal loss of precious human lives. The al-Qaeda terror network took refuge on Islam to advance its mission of taking revenge against the west, particularly against the most arrogant super power, the United States of America. The al-Qaeda's Islamic fundamentalism got befitting reply from equally blind, intolerant and hegemonic political fundamentalism of the US ruling clique led by Bush and Cheney.

Very recently, I evaluated myself and discovered that I am able and agile by physique and for lack of a better term, deranged by nature. Twisted, weird and sometimes ugly - yes; I never considered myself evil, though. You see, to be evil - you have to judge… you have to judge everything that appears on your path; and not just the countenance, the very insides - the deep caverns of whatever it is. On the contrary, judgment is the one thing I have always been against.

I was lazily strolling in my neighborhood one fine morning when I heard high pitched barks of a dog, followed by rounds of applause, in the distance. Curious, I weaved my way through the narrow alleys towards the sounds and came upon a square where a red Labrador, flanked by two Poodles, on a platform, was barking into a microphone, surrounded by a mass of myriad creatures – horses, cows, cats, chickens, pigeons, crows, snakes, rats and so on.

As the country is making progress towards reaching an all-party agreement that may lead to a peaceful political settlement building up on the April uprising, it is not too early to think about the various opportunities that loom in Nepal’s horizon that the forthcoming government will have to choose from. Finding the right opportunities and opting for them will help us prosper in the next 10-15 years. Any opportunity we opt for should be tied to the comparative advantage we have as a small nation (but not too small by the number of people we have) in the planet. Our comparative advantage lies in cheap labor, beautiful mountains, massive water resources, and the indomitable spirit of our people. Also, we can’t be shooting for too many competing opportunities.
Question would be “who identifies the opportunities and goals for a nation?” I think it is the national government that creates platform for zillions of opportunities for the private entrepreneurs and then the entrepreneurs play on the platform and propel the nation towards prosperity. I am going to talk about basic stuffs that the government (I mean the people’s government which I hope will be formed within the next two years) needs to do to allow entrepreneurs to succeed. If we have a government which can engineer (note – there is a difference between providing and engineering) availability of basic stuffs like education and health care, we as a nation can head uphill. It won’t be easy because when the going gets easy, we could be going downhill.

I couldn't go to work today. I fell ill. Dashain finally caught up with me, I guess. I stayed home and watched a movie. It was called Quills and it starred Geoffrey Rush as the infamous Marquis de Sade. The plot of the movie is partly based upon true events. Regardless of what one's opinion is of de Sade, I must state this for the record: the character portrayed in this movie is an inspiration to all aspiring writers.
In a desperate effort to censor him, they take away his paper, ink and quills. So he writes on his linen with red wine and a piece of wishbone. They take that away; so he writes on his clothes with his own blood. He does not stop even after his tongue has been cut off. He keeps writing until he takes his very last breath.
My keyboard is broken. The "a", "s" and "w" keys don't work. I wrote this text by copying and pasting each time I had to use any of those three letters. I would like to think of it as a tribute to de Sade, however little or inappropriate it may be.

The perception that Nepal, despite its socio-economic problems, is still a land of immense potential and beauty is re-enforced by these reflections of expatriates and tourists visiting Nepal. The nation that was once known for its magnanimous silence, huge bells and the idyllic landscape has had a rough decade due to political upheavals and the news that went out was not very rosy. Now, the infinitely transient image of Shangri-La is once again reviving. In spite of large-scale skepticism within and outside the nation, a majority of the residents and tourists find Nepal safer than the rest of the world. ‘My daughter goes out to Thamel. She never complains about any problems,’ says Francis Wiseman, owner of Fire and Ice Pizzeria, Thamel. ‘In London, I would not send her out even for a loaf for bread. There is no other city in the world as peaceful and safe as here’. The Scores of other expatriates and long-time travelers in Nepal hold similar views:

Twenty years ago, India was worst corrupt country. Politicians and businesspeople worked with each other for the mutual benefit, national interest sidelined. The license rule prevailed. Politicians dominated the businesspeople showing the fear of seizing their operating license. Politicians could also protect the illegal and unfair conducts. As they made unfair conduct, businesspeople paid a large amount of money as donation to the political parties and leaders to secure their license. On return, businesspeople threatened the politicians of withdrawing the support or not paying the donation, if the politicians didn't conduct at their interest. Donation drive was the principal feature of Indian economy. This scenario is still portrayed by many Indian films. This was once a very common reality.

Dashain is not only important from the religious, social and cultural point of View. It has the political salience as well. The Dashain Myth of the victory of truth over evils itself has a political salience. The feasting and festive of Dashain has also brought important changes in the political scenario of the country in recent years. After King Gyanendra was enthroned, the Palace coteries could not immediately dare to declare the only son of the King as the Crown Prince whose image was of a criminal among the public. They chose the festive of Dashain. The next year in October four, again Dashain days were chosen to sack the incumbent Deuba government. The situation would have turned otherwise, if only the political parties didn’t meet at the eve of Dashain and recommended the King to postpone the election at other times. Dashain in following two years could not bring such changes. However, despite speculations that Palace may enforce the new constitution last year, it again chose Dashain Festive to enact some amendments on Media law. This law can be termed as the blackest of the black laws that was imposed by General Ayub Khan in Pakistan in 1963.

Looking at the current political scenario of the country, I have thought of a theory that might just come into play soon. This has worked in different parts of the world when a group of organized or unorganized looters/killers pushed the general people to the limit and the general public awoke and retaliated. I remember the day when mandales used to loot and kill people during the heyday of the Panchayat era. Mandales were the group protected by the palace and they thought they were above the law. Neither could they be prosecuted, nor could the armies or the police be used against them. Palace protection was the key to the mandales’ existence. The King’s personal secretary and generals and ex-generals close to the king used to promote mandales as a parallel force to the Police and Armies. They led mandales to believe they were above the law. That’s’ exactly what the Maoist cadres think and they are doing the exact same thing the mandales were doing then. As the movement against the Panchayat started, mandales were the first ones targeted by the people. They had to go into hiding as the streets they used to rule became very unsafe for them. Mandales had no one to go to when thousands came to streets against them.

Nepal is notorious for its slow legal procedure, often taking years to decide even a minor case. But half a year ago, on April 3rd, acting with astonishing speed, a verdict was passed within two weeks against a 50 year old woman of Tibetian origin sentencing her to 12 years in prision. Her crime – cow slaughter. Evidence – some beef sukuti found in her house. The story of Kripa Bhoteni was well publicized in the international media, though it failed to attract much attention in Nepal. Neither the authorities nor the human rights activists did anything. It seems we are more interested in implementing the law than understanding the injustices in the law itself.

There seems to be a sudden trend of backlash against the progressive ideologies put forward by the Maoists, and the popular mandate (a slippery term) of the April Uprising. It seems a segment of the civil society are revolting against dogmas that even the ideologically bankrupt SPA had accepted – such as secularism, equality for all castes, and the right to self-determination of ethnic minorities. The recent coordinated attacks against dalits in Doti, the ever increasing number of protests by Hindu fundamentalists, and the sudden rise in the rhetoric of national unity and indivisibility are clear indications of this.

That was a short article and yet successfully portrayed the overall scenario of Nepali literature and made intelligent analysis.

When I was a child, my grandma looked after me. She is a typical Hindu woman with religious ideology and strong superstitious beliefs. She told us various stories. Her all the stories had the ultimate focus on God. Thus, we acquired strong faith upon God from her. Later when we went to school, those beliefs strongly contradicted with scientific beliefs. We were troubled when her story of the evolution of earth from the blood, flesh and bones of Madhu and Kaitab contrasted with that of the collision of the sun with a comet. We were astounded to know that the Human Beings were not the creation of Lord Vishnu but they evolved in earth as defined by Charles Darwin on his theory of Evolution of Life.

Adolescent is a person who is no longer a child but not yet an adult. The word adolescent comes from the Latin term adolescents, which means growing up or growing towards. An adolescent is someone who is “growing toward” adulthood. Most western societies consider a person to be an adolescent from about 13 to at least 18 years of age. In these societies adolescence thus roughly corresponds to the teenagers.

Nepal has a long tradition of political instability. After people’s movement II also this type of unsteady situation has not been settled down due to political parties’ immaturity and recklessness over solving the political problems. History has witnessed the power of Nepali people and their political awareness in people’s movement II. Nepali people have given the mandate to the political parties to resolve the political deadlock and bring the peaceful situation in the country. The mandate is neither for only seven political parties nor for only Maoists. Both of them should come under same umbrella and resolve our country’s social, economic and political problems. Only the political willingness can solve the political impasse and for that all political parties including Maoists should take initiations.

Thirteen years ago, an American scholar Samuel P Huntington wrote on an article 'The Clash of Civilizations?' that the central and most dangerous dimension of the emerging global politics would be conflicts between the groups from differing civilizations. He opined that the twenty first century global conflicts will be dominated by the clashes between those civilizations. In the extended form of the article which came as the book 'The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of world order' in 1996, Huntington elaborated that major conflicts would revolve around the Sinic (Chinese/ Buddhist), Western (Christianity led by the US) and Islam civilizations. He has divided the world into nine civilizations i.e. Western, Sinic (Chinese), Islam, Russian Orthodox, Japanese, Latin American, African, Indian (Hindu), and the Buddhist. However, He has said the major conflicts will be between the Sinic civilization supported by Islam and the US led western civilization. The core of the Sinic civilization will be China in the East Asia; the western civilization will be led by the US and supported by the European nations whereas the core of the Islam civilization will be the Middle East. Huntington has pointed out that major conflicts will arise between the Western and the Sinic civilization supported by the Islam. He has pointed out that the latter will challenge the US hegemony in the post cold war period. Huntington, however, has neglected the South Asian Civilization based on Hindu religious philosophy which could have the balancing power or at least as the super power in the South Asian continent. This civilization is being led by India and Nepal is on its periphery.

The issue of Congress unification has hit the debates since last few weeks, especially, after Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's proclamation from his home town that Nepali Congress will be unified by Dashain. He also proclaimed the generosity to give adequate room to all and even declared readiness to abandon Party Presidency. There is sufficient ground to doubt on 'noble' cause for Koirala's call for unification. Primary question whirls around why is the octogenarian leader, who ever wanted to assume power and negated the decent voices, calling for immediate unification? His close aides doubt it is not just his noble wish to unite both the Congresses and make it the largest democratic force in the country, but has hidden intentions. Political thinker and Nepali Congress Democratic leader Pradip Giri also raised this concern and wrote on a daily that congress should be unified not to uphold Monarchy but to address people's aspirations for peace and prosperity.

Nepal and India share the religious, social, cultural, political, economic relations since the history. Ties between them are not bound at the diplomatic level. At the critical hours, we have the history that both the country people shared the feeling of cooperation. BP Koirala, Man Mohan Adhikari and other leaders were treated as the same nationals during freedom movement in India the previous century. Dr. Rajendra Prasad and even Mahatma Gandhi expected significant support and help from Nepali nationals at their fight against the British imperialism. In response, despite the cruel domination from the British rule, Nepali nationals also fought against the imperialism. Hundreds of them didn’t care the prison and chains and fought as if the war was for the emancipation of the same country. And certainly, liberation of India from the British imperialism could significantly support the fight for freedom from the tyrannical family rule of the Ranas in the homeland.

Today’s world and its scenario can be judged differently. The changing phenomenon of the world has been going on in the rapidity of different moments and so it has been happening as accordingly in music field also. So, our Nepali music has also been pacing its impetus within the changed atmosphere. Now in our Nepali music field, we can also see the different patterns in songs and musical beats. And in the mean time the new generation has come to make a payment in music field and it is apparent that the future of our music and its recognition will depend upon the tenderfoots and their hardworking in music.

Recently I was in Bangalore on an industrial tour and I called one of my friends from engineering days. He is an Infoscion and we have been close friends for last 10 years. I had expected that he would come to receive me and give me a huge hug. But I had to wait till eight in the night to get a glimpse of him. I waited outside Planet M watching the hurly burly crowd on the Brigade Road. He came and we had a great time together – we talked about the past, present and our future plans. Seeing his busy schedule, I told him how I came out of the whirlpool of work. When I returned from Bangalore, I scanned two pages from my diary and mailed him.

{nə’pɑːl }Nepal

The landlocked himalayan realm in South Asia, the country of Mt. Everest, the only official Hindu state in the world { as per the CIA World Factbook }, शान्ती छेत्र नेपाल, the country of culture and tradition, encircled by the People’s Republic of China to the north and by India to the south, east and west. The cliché for NEPAL as per the most accepted understanding from the olden: Ne (holy) and pal (cave). But the picture has shown it hellish rather than holy.
The forefather of politics has diluted Nepalese society culturally, economically and politically. I am not blaming but you can see, feel and hear the situation in town.

I had heard a lot about Sama Gurukul. It is supposed to be an artistic hub of Kathmandu, like City Lights of San Francisco in the 60s. So when I heard that a play, Jeevan Dekhi Jeevan Samma, was being performed there, I was excited to go see it. It was written by Prof. Abhi Subedi and directed by Sunil Pokhrel, Nepal’s most renowned theatre director. Furthermore, I had read some glowing reviews of the play in Nepali newspapers. As it turned out, it was a disappointing experience.

Time and again I read here in local papers that “ABC” International Expert Advisors are assigned for “XYZ” Local Nepali project. I laugh at this rhetoric or let say beautiful paradox happening here. I have worked with, and personally known some exceptional International Consultants, Experts and Advisors who have worked here in Nepal. They have rendered wonderful service and contributed greatly to this nation. I have also known some of the so-called “Foreign Expert Advisors” working here in Nepal whose Job Descriptions require that they “give proper advice and recommendations for the development of Nepal”. However, in some cases what happens in reality is that Mr International Expert receives advice, training and teaching from their local counterparts i.e. Mr. Nepali.

The human mind works in mysterious ways. One interesting phenomenon along this line is that of associative memory. Sights, sounds and smells that one experiences somehow stir up memories of what the individual once experienced. This happens on such a subconscious level that the rational, conscious mind fails to see the connection. It was only natural then that I could not find any reason why the desolate hill in Jhule where I was a few weeks ago reminded me of the movie The Blue Lagoon.
The Blue Lagoon is a beautifully made movie with a metaphysical notion at its core. Two very young kids (a boy and a girl) are stranded on a tropical island. They manage to survive and grow with nothing but nature and their own instincts at their aid. Completely isolated from human society, these kids grow up as siblings until they reach puberty. At this age, their instinct drives them into becoming lovers. As they grow older, they manage to have a child and hence raise a family. In other words, the nature of their relationship changes to make way for the natural processes that must occur. It is essentially a positive spin on the same concept that The Lord of the Flies manages to present with a dark vision.
The hill in question in Jhule is situated at around 2200 meters. The whole hill, I was told, was bought by some foreigner who intends to turn it into a tourist resort. It is ironic that because it is "owned", it is totally unused and in its natural state; and because of this, one day it will turn into one of those resorts we see up in Nagarkot and all its glory will be gone. For now, however, the hill is blissful: desolate, empty and beautiful. As I sat on the edge of this hill and felt the cool breeze all over my body, with clouds touching my hair as they gently went by; I could picture the two characters from The Blue Lagoon merrily running around across this hill: free, blissfully ignorant, unclothed and unrestricted.

When I returned to Janakpur after five years, I was surprised to see that not much had changed in the city. True, new houses were being built in the outskirts of the city which was slowly but surely sprawling towards the outlying villages. A few new shops with large glass windows decorated with fashionably clothed mannequins had opened up in the heart of the city. There were more commercial banks, private schools, and cyber cafes. But that the pace of change had been slow became evident if you took a rickshaw ride through the main streets and chowks of the city – the same dusty asphalt road, murky green ponds, scattered paan-stalls every ten steps you took, and colorful posters of cheap Hindi films.

Well, I've been feelin' so down
Feelin' like a stranger in this town
I was doin' okay but now I think I was born to lose
Don't know what to do, I got the bhangeri blues
This was a game that I never played
I didn't care and that way I would have stayed
It got the best of me; I got burnt, bloody rouge
Can't go on like this, I got the bhangeri blues
I paid the price, buddy, I got it so cold
Now I'm dying inside, lord, I feel so old
As my nights drag on, I find hard to let it loose
Got nothing more to say, I got the bhangeri blues

- "Lady in Black", Uriah Heep (1971)
Fear is undoubtedly the most universal of all human traits. It plays a big part in all of our lives, and it has played a huge one in mine. There are countless things that I have held back on -- things that I have really wanted to do, and I am sure that doing them would make me much happier and hurt no one in the process. Most of the time, however, I have been unable to take that first step. I have got used to attributing this to laziness or me "just being this way". As a result, all the chances I missed, all the things I let go of, and all the people I let slip away have all gathered up over the years to contribute to my discontent.
This year has been different. This year has been eventful. This year, for me, has been about leaps of faith. It was truly amazing. I went to bed afraid and I woke up with new-found courage, or faith, rather. I have been "taking the plunge" in many scenarios ever since, and it feels phenomenal. Things don't turn out the way want them to (and that is perhaps what breeds the fear in the first place), but just "doing it" is worth all that is put into it. There are truly no rewards without risk. Fear was put into us for a number of reasons, and one of them is for us to conquer it and truly "live" in the process of doing so.
I feel I am a better person altogether than I was a month ago, or six months ago. I feel like I am getting better everyday. I know I still have a long way to go, but now I look forward to it. I had been "existing" all my life. I have been "living" this year. For anyone who has been thinking of doing something (ANYTHING), but has been afraid to take that first step, at the risk of sounding cliché, I say "just do it". You will feel better and as a result, you will live better. If things work out, you will obviously feel great. If they don't, you still feel great for simply "having done it". On the long run, no one really has anything to lose.
We all stand on a cliff as high as all our fears combined. Come, people; let us leap together.

“Are you going to get married or not!!” a question that every individual is bound to answer when s/he reaches a certain age, that varies from one person to another. Before going any further and on top of most, ‘who’ and ‘when’ need to be answered. ‘Who’ and ‘When’ are like synonyms in this context. For some “When to marry” is more important than “Whom to marry” while for others the reverse holds true. Moreover matching these questions perfectly weighs more than answering both correctly.
The world we dwell in is expanding and so are the expectations and desires of individuals. More often than not, we are caught up in vicious circle of career goals and ambitious quests of moving up the corporate ladder that we forget to match or even answer this basic question. However it is not the worst case as there are friends and family to answer the big question for you or you can even ask the big WWW to find the right piece to solve the jigsaw puzzle.

After my second grade exams, I went back to my village. Back then we used to do sugarcane farming. Sugarcane harvesting would start sometime in December and would continue till February/March. For those two or three months, we used to stay overnight in the farm. We slept in the farm house (a temporary cottage, of course). It was just like a long camping. I used to love staying in the farm overnight. It was hard work – go to bed early in the evening and wakeup early in the morning (sometimes as early as 3 a.m.). Processing sugarcane is a complicated process: we had to squeeze the raw sugarcane, boil the liquid until it became very thick, and then we poured the liquid into a hole dug on earth. The thick liquid would become solid raw sugar (call sakhar in Nepali) after letting it cool off. Even in the tranquil of the farm house though, memories of Kathmandu would scare me. I would vividly remember the awful days I spent there. I was not ready to go back to Kathmandu. But I had to go.

Bearing a confused mind and to fulfill my mother’s wish to meet my relatives, my journey started, thinking more about the people I am going to miss and trifle about the ones I am going to meet.
Weighing both time and my pocket status, I decided to take the cheapest means of travel, bus, which eventually would prove to be the worst decision of the day. I was headed towards Noida which is about 60 km from our office at Gurgaon. What is your expected time to cross a distance of just 60 km when you have all means of Transport? – one hour, 2 hours or lets say two and half hours in the worst case. I was prepared for the worst case but even in some cases preparing for the worst in not enough.
It had already started to rain by the time I reached a bus stand near our office, after 15 minutes of walk. There was no single trace of a bus in sight and as the time passed by with still no sign of any bus, I started to rethink the decision to commute by bus. Some time I would eye the highway for a bus and in next moment the sky in a hope that it would stop raining. Finally to put my anxious anticipation to rest, a lonesome bus made a screeching stop in the bus stand. I was not sure whether to take that bus or not. But a beggar can never be chooser; there was no other option so I had to go where-ever it took.

Meeting Chunni Lal was an incident that led me to write this piece of information. My grandmother is an old lady in her seventies and she tries her best to avoid allopathic medicines. And to my amazement, she knows a lot of people who are proponents of their own ready-made concoctions from locally found herbs. She had called one of the Vaidhyas who had a vast knowledge of Ayurveda, Vaastu and Astrology. We had a formal introduction and we talked, discussed and argued. We talked about my grandmother's illness and he popped up the cure – wrote down a concoction of herbs with weird names. I had heard names of just one or two among them. The good thing about him was that he told me the place and name of the merchant from whom I could buy those herbs – Rajbiraj and Chunni Lal.

As those eggs were boiling just out of curiosity I asked, “Hey auntie, how do these eggs get inside the chicken in the first place?” I was 8 then. The answer I got didn’t help my curiosity but at least I understood I should never ask how eggs get inside chicken. It wasn’t somehow similar to asking my dad “What’s beyond the end of universe?” where he would sit there for hours and try to explain about infinity.
I used to love scary movies, especially Hindi horror movies. I wasn’t very much specific about Hindi or English movies, I just loved any scary movie; but most of the English scary movies started with a big 18 plus sign and that meant I couldn’t watch that movie. “Time for you guys to go to bed” Dad would say. We never asked him why and he never bothered to explain either.

Several recent decisions by the special judicial court on corruption related cases in favor of notorious corrupt political leaders reveal Nepal’s inefficient and frequently biased judicial system. Such decisions call for immediate reforms to reinvigorate the present legal system to deliver justice and create a corruption free, efficient and fair society, which will aid in Nepal’s economic development. A modern economy requires judicial system of such a nature. Every study undertaken by a reputable international research body of Nepal’s judiciary system has pointed out that Nepal’s judicial system, except the Supreme Court, is mired in corruption and is grossly inefficient and often unfair in delivering justice. These studies also have consistently revealed that lawsuits and criminal cases in Nepal’s courts have piled up for years without any timely decisions, raising the cost to the society. The business community in Nepal frequently complains about the courts inability to ensure the enforcement of contracts.

There is a strange fantasy I have that stems from a recurring dream that I have been having for the last six years. In the dream, I am standing on the edge of a cliff. The sun is just about to set and therefore the clouds are glowing red. There is a cool breeze flowing that is “heavenly” – for the lack of a better word. I can feel the presence of another person beside me. At this very moment, I feel as good as I will ever feel; for if such a thing as “the one you are meant to be with” exists, I believe this person is she. As I turn around towards her so as to reveal her face, the dream ends abruptly.

It is infuriating to see how national budgeting is done in Nepal. Nothing visionary is implemented. The people are seldom filled with optimism about the future of the country. What Nepal needs is a radical measure which can transform the face of the country. With this in mind, I have presented a hypothetical case.
Nepal is a nation of about 27 million people. Let us say about 9 million of them are between the ages of 16 and 35. And let us assume that one third of the nine million are unemployed or partially employed. So we have three million young people looking for work.

It all started with a smile, yes that little curvature of the lips made all the difference. I was watching the world cup football, Brazil Vs. Australia. Cafu was booked by the referee and then Cafu smiled, even shook hands with the referee after he got booked. The commentator said, “ Cafu is shaking hands with the referee as if he is almost thankful for being booked”. This simple gesture brought a smile on my face. And then I began to think of all the simple things in life that makes us smile, that makes us happy and that makes us wonder at times. When was the last time I smiled, I began to remember. I know most of the people tend to think about this when they are themselves. And many find it quite hard to figure out when. We are lost in this chaos and disorder, we hardly get time to unravel and actually think of things that matter to us.

What if we declare - “AIDS, Cancer, and Diabetes can be permanently cured without any medication!” You would probably call us ‘insane.’ That we have lost the state of our mind. But this is what exactly Swami Ramdev affirmed in 2002. He guaranteed that by merely following pranayama yoga, one could achieve what has been the deadliest disease for humankind. Leave alone criticism, the announcement was so powerful that millions have followed his words (India and Nepal). Many of them had no such disease, but all wanted to look fit and fine. Some vied for mental relaxation while others wanted to get slim. Pranayama (a simple breathing exercise) was the solution to all these problems.

The match between Tunisia and Saudi Arabia (football, World Cup 2006, for the sake of context) has just ended in a draw (2-2). I missed Spain's match today because I had to work late. As I sat down to watch this one, I was pretty reluctant, not to mention tired and sleepy. Since both teams were underdogs, I wasn't expecting much from the match (and it stayed that way for the early first half). Right now, I am really glad that I stayed and watched it, because to date, this was the most entertaining match in the tournament by far.
So far, the general consensus is that Germany, England, France and Brazil have all disappointed the audience. I wonder if I should stick to the underdogs, at least for the early stages of the tournament. In any case, this match has certainly woken me up. I will definitely stay up to watch Germany take on Poland. It's only about an hour away. It's midnight already. I just hope I can get to work on time tomorrow.

There once lived a man who was a multi-millionaire but had an extremely stupid son. The father himself was very entrepreneurial and believed in working hard, being creative, taking risks and not squandering money. Though the father tried hard to instill the same values in his son from early childhood, his son somehow chose a different path, being influenced more by his spoiled friends than his father’s teachings. Gradually, as the son went through high school and college, the distance between him and his father grew further. After the son graduated from college, he got a job which paid reasonably well. His salary would have been more than enough to manage a family of three even at an upper-middle class standard. But the son would spend his salary in its entirety in the first week, and then go to ask his father for pocket money for the rest of the month. The son was also a free loader in his father’s house. The father was worried, but the mother did not care much. She boasted about her son’s lavish ways when she was with other housewives. She loved talking about her son’s “prince-like” lifestyle which made her feel like royalty. The dad felt sick every time he heard the mother and son talk.

Recent closures of some vibrant businesses and industries in many parts of Nepal attributable to excessive extortion by the Maoist group raise serious questions about the qualities of the group's leadership. Such actions indicate either a lack of basic economic sense or a complete disregard about the future implications of such actions. The economic consequences of such immoral and unjust actions, including destruction of infrastructure, excessive extortion that forces business closures, cripple the country's already beleaguered economy. Furthermore, the personal mental trauma and negative psychological fear of extortion go above and beyond the monetary costs that can be quantified more easily.

It is Sunday evening. I have returned from a hiking trip that began from Mata Tirtha and ended at Pharping after six straight hours of enjoyable walking. I was hiking with my colleagues from D2 Nepal. During the hike, we talked about many things ranging from politics to dating. Many of my colleagues at D2 are still bachelors, and spending time with them makes me feel 25 years old again. They are amazingly smart and friendly. They have great sense of humor, and I find myself laughing all the time when I am with them. I have immense respect for them.
Walking through the hills can often make you contemplative. As I was hiking, I had the opportunity to think about my past. I am really proud of my past. I had the opportunity to experience both village and city life. I was born and grew up in a lower middle class family (which, according to the UN definition of poverty, would be a poor family). Growing up like that, I did not know what to dream of. My elders never taught me how to dream and what to dream for. I was totally empty.

The most valuable asset of a company is human resource. It is all about employees in the company and every employee matters. Someone who does not matter should not be in the company. Hiring and keeping great ones, converting even mediocre ones to great ones, and firing those who do not matter help a company build a great team. A company which sticks to the mantra that every employee matters and takes care of each of them will prosper and grow year after year and continually beating competitors. Companies that ignore the rank and files thinking that only super-stars and senior managers matter will gradually lose market share and will start going downhill rapidly. This raises the important question about who comes, who stays and who should go. Very simple – keep the ones with a “winning” attitude and let losers go.

Very recently, I went to the Shah Dynasty museum in Basantapur. I have lived in this city for twenty three years now (all my life, in other words), and this was the first time I had been there. There are people who find museums fun and edifying; and there are people who find them boring. As far as Basantapur's museum is concerned, I have one word that describes it: pompous. As I walked through the museum, I heard voices echoing in my head. This is what the voices said:
Look, mere commoner, and be amazed. This is why you and your loved ones work hard all day and pay your taxes – so that we can live like THIS.

This is a great chance and an equal challenge.

I was attending a small gathering last Saturday evening. Bunch of Nepali friends either working or studying in Boston area were present. You know what goes on when Nepalese get together for a couple of drinks - Men talk about politics and women, they have nothing else to talk about but shopping, their boyfriends or husbands. Sometime, I see some bozos being praised by their women like they are the messiah or winner of all times. Good for them. And there are some women who always want some more from their men. They are too ambitious and nothing is good enough for them. You can guess which one of them you are and which one you want to be. Good luck in figuring this out. Let us switch gear to men as I am not woman psychologist and I consider woman as the most complex creature in the world. Like all other Nepalese men, I want to talk about politics. Talking politics and doing nothing about it and letting bums lead and destroy the country seem to be in Nepalese blood. Like my Saturday night friends, many of us love to talk about nation development and politics and criticize those in the leadership stereotypically. Each one of us considers himself to be the best. We think if we were given opportunities we would lead the country like FDR led the post-depression United States. It is always easier said than done. Maybe, we should analyze why our leaders have have failed time and again. Is it because the job is too difficult? Is it because leaders are really bums? Or is it because the very political system we have in our country is crappy?

I am currently twenty-three; and for most of the short life that I have lived, I have considered myself as being or at least wanting to be cold and emotionless – driven by extreme focus and hard, rational logic. Human emotions, I have held, were what our species was cursed with during genesis. For some reason I cannot fathom, I have always disliked humanity as a race and thought of it as pitiful at best. Consequently, I have been steering away from people in general. I have always been fascinated, however, by human behavior and the way the human mind works. I have never admired it, though.

As far as day-to-day life is concerned, I would like to think of myself as an optimist. I am a follower, however, of the philosophy of pessimism. This means that on the global or universal scale, I am a hardcore pessimist. I do not believe the major problems that the world faces today will ever be solved. I firmly believe that things, on the whole, will get worse; and that the human race was doomed right from the moment it was created.

It hasn’t been long since the historic moment when an autocratic despot kneeled down before the people. But the streets are aflame once again. This time it is the political parties who are the target of the anger.
It is frustrating to see that with the sacrifice of the thousands injured, 22 dead, and 38 disappeared people (all official estimates), once again we seem in not much of a better position than where we began.

No one can trace the history of human civilization so minutely that we can conclude exactly when it was that people, as a race, decided that they would trust a very smaller group of people to tell them how to lead their lives. Ever since that moment in time, however, the human race stopped being a marvel of nature – a climax of evolution. Ever since that moment in time, people stopped being God's creatures. People became sheep – herded ever so easily by a select few with the might to do so. One event in human history that stands as both a cause and an effect of this phenomenon is the birth of religion. That being said, the object of this text is not to denounce religion, or God – but to call for disassociation of the former manmade concept from the latter natural presence.

It is disheartening to know that some of our recently re-instated members of parliament are demanding removal of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority’s (CIAA) chief Surya Nath Upadhyay. These are the same political leaders who were indicted with massive corruption and irregularities and brought forward for prosecution by the CIAA. Political leaders ill-conceived motive is simple- replace Mr. Upadhyay with their henchman, come out unscathed from the previous corruption charges and enjoy a new, lavish political life with illegally amassed means. It is a matter of less concern of who will replace Mr. Upadhya in the agency, but a fundamental concern on politicization of CIAA for personal and political gains. Such acts from any responsible side- the government bureaucrats, judicial, and the police, not only severely weaken our institutions but also threaten our national liberty. Besides, these are the same leaders, who during 2000/2001 voted to give CIAA more power and autonomy. If they have had a full-knowledge that their own creation would go after their crimes in the future, most of them would not have voted in favor of empowering the CIAA then.

I had written the following article about 2 yrs back and am posting it here as the emotions still stand firm even today..
The government prohibiting crackers and deusi after six this Tihar was indeed a welcome gesture amidst the deafening chaos smiting the nation lately. Though deprived of the excitement of firing crackers and playing deusi, Tihar this year was dedicated in remembering all the ‘bhai’s lost in the battle both from ally and rival side, in peace. Though intermittent crackers were heard around the valley, this year Tihar incandescent with diyos and adorned New Road with its aura filled with enchanting incense was a silent affair. Without an exception, my Tihar was also silent. However the cause of silence was not the government prohibition but rather a biological phenomenon considered as a taboo. I was having my monthly menstrual cycle during Tihar and I was deprived of the excitement that Tihar brings to us just once a year.

I am infuriated by the appointment of Ram Sharan Mahat as the finance minister. By appointing a person who has miserably failed thrice in the most important portfolio of the country, Girija has insulted the Nepali people. It is a clear example of Girija’s inability to break the circle of bad guys who unequivocally bow down to him. He does not seem to have courage or the interest to give an opportunity to a newer generation that has radical ideas.

I haven't been very optimistic about the possibility of the Maoists joining the multi-party democratic system. If they do, I will be the first one to salute them despite their past actions. However, I also want them to apologize to the people of Nepal who suffered so much due to their cruel and inhuman acts. I am pleased by the announcement of the three months truce offered by the Maoist. Could it be another Maoist ploy as they very much expect the seven-party government to reciprocate immediately? We can’t ignore that.

On February 23rd, 1981, the Spanish parliament was stormed by 200 armed troops of the Civil Guard, a paramilitary group within the army. The soldiers fired in the air and held about 350 MPs hostage for 18 hours. They wanted King Juan Carlos to assume absolute power.

The spring flower is saddened at the season’s end.
For none had thought to stop and smell her.
The breath of life, sparsely remembered still causes the hearts of all to beat
Yet most often is remembered not… lest she is shallowed or lost.
When night kisses day and day embraces night…Sunrise…Sunset;
But quick is their love and few but seem to notice.
A drunkard swaying to an fro; aware only of the blurred images before him,
Speaks the truth that most care not to hear.
I stand ...Notice me not...

There will be more chaos as we can’t please Maoist no matter what. They want to establish Maoism – who can tolerate that? There will be new constitution – but a lot will happen before that. The tough road is election of constituent assembly which is not possible without Maoist participation and Maoists never believe in free and fair election. They want “unconditional” constituent assembly election. That means government needs to hold election while the Maoist continue to do killing and extortion. As we know from the past, that Maoist continued killing and extortion even during cease fire. We can’t let Maoist have 75% majority in the assembly just because they have night time control of villages and they can threaten people to vote for their candidates. They will try to rig the election and win by force if the government holds the election without disarmed Maoist participation in the interim government.

The Chief of Army Pyar Jung Thapa’s recent statement that the Maoists could be incorporated in the Nepalese Army has brought an important question to the forefront. What is to be done with the large Army and Armed Police forces, and the Maoists guerillas?

One fifth of parliamentarians elected in 2005 across the globe were women, according to a report released in February 2006 by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). This brings the average of women in parliament (Congress for us in the U.S.) in 187 countries to 16.3%, up from 15.7% in December 2004.

On Thursday, April 20, 2006, I heard chants of “लोकतंत्र जिन्दाबाद”. The people of Nepal had awoken. They had come out to the streets on their own, self-motivated, and angered and frustrated by a repressive system that had denied them their basic human rights and abused and maltreated the people in the worst possible ways.
We people of Nepal are from the Land of Peace; our motto forever has been “बॉच र बॉच्न देऊ”. But time and again, we have been deceived by tainted leaders and a despotic king. Now, however, after more than 15 years of injustice, the Nepali people have arisen once again against the oppression they have had to face.

The thugs appointed as ministers by a regressed king who stole the representative government unconstitutionally (the phenomena is called kleptocracy) are shouting with their might that the current peoples struggle was infiltrated by CPN Maoist cadres. They even used irresponsible security personnel and vigilante, generally known in Nepal as hired killers and muggers, to torture the arrested demonstrators, already injured with bullet wounds or baton charges, and to make them sign the ‘confessed document’ of being Maoist cadres. Those were, of course, funny and stupid methods! There are none within Nepal and outside in the world who believed them or their ‘constructed’ evidences, or would ever believe.

The royal takeover of February 1, 2005, whatever the intentions behind it, was well received by the common Nepali. They were glad that the recurrent strikes and Bandhs had ceased, if only for a while. Things started going awry when the king formed the Royal Commission for Corruption Control (RCCC), nominated discredited leaders of the Panchayat-era, and gave ministerial berth to some convicted criminals. Ignoring the already present Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority (CIAA), which the people trusted, and instituting RCCC irked the people. Whatever credibility was left was lost when the king held the so-called municipal polls without popular support. It was reminiscent of the elections held by Zia-ul-Haq’s regime in Pakistan.

I had never heard of "The Community Consortium for the Right to Work" before. Neither am I aware of the constituents of this consortium. No doubt, after reading the advertisement below that appeared in "The Himalayan Times" on Tuesday, 04/04/06, many will immediately jump to brand this as a yet another ‘royalist’ lobby. I have no extra information to either endorse or dispute these claims. But as a working professional, with no personal political agenda, holding a job in Nepal and entrusted with a responsibility in these uncertain times, for myself and many others, I could not agree more to the word and spirit of this appeal.

When a nation is in the midst of uncertainty, corruption and pillage of public properties skyrocket. The uncertainty affects every high ranking government official, including the judiciary, who are beset by insecurity because they have no idea what is going to happen next. So, to secure their futures, they start amassing more wealth by hook or by crook. Bribery, corruption, and the systematic siphoning off of national wealth remain the most common methods they adopt. Wealth amassed by such methods start crossing the national borders as these people do not trust local banks and institutions.

I was in Kathmandu from Jan 25th to Feb 13th and situation there was very disappointing. God bless the patience we Nepalese have!
Things remained closed for seven days and we did not do much. Rather, we took these things as a part of life. It was difficult for me, maybe because I have grown used to the way of life in the United States over the last 10 years. The people here would not put up with these kinds of things for even one second. We can't think of a single political entity in a western country where they would call for a nation-wide "Bandh" and survive politically after that!

Who would have thought that China would dominate the world consumer market within 50 years of the Red revolution? Who would have thought that Japan would grow at a double-digit rate for 20 years and become the world’s second largest economy? It is all part of ambition and determination of those visionaries who lead the nation. Nepal has not yet seen visionary leaders who can bring together people with different ideas and build consensus among political parties for nation building. It is natural to have differences in opinions, but we need leaders who can forgo these differences and join hands when it comes to national interest. No doubt, Nepal, sooner or later, will find such leaders who will find a way to introduce ambitious plans and policies for the nation. Let us hope we see that soon. What could be such ambitious undertakings?

It affects almost every aspect of life in developed, developing and underdeveloped nations. This popular Nepali proverb means, in other words, that if you have a diamond, it is only worth something to you if you recognize its value and put it to good use. If you don’t, the precious diamond is as good as a piece of rock. I learned this and many other pieces of proverbial wisdom when I was growing up in a small village about 20 kilometers outside the Kathmandu valley. I remember many small incidents from my village life. Back then, those ...
