Corporate Football - D2 vs Goethals Alumni
By Prashanta Shrestha
Two quick goals and a superbly taken free kick sealed the victory for Goethals Alumni as they got even with D2 to overcome the earlier defeat at home ground with a 4-2 win here at IOE football ground. Although they started cagily in the Pulchowk ground that was at least twice as large as their home ground, Goethals Alumni soon picked up some passes at the midfield exploited the defensive frailties of D2’s makeshift defense to score two successive goals inside the first 30 minutes.

A Proletariat Beginning; will they succeed?
By Indra Dhoj Kshetri
Nepal Maoists resolve eliminating private property as the first step towards proletariat state.
Yes. They have finally resolved to eliminate the private property. The CPN (Maoist) has decided to eliminate private property and has formed a committee to initiate it from the party leaders and cadres. After the committee completes finding the details of the private properties of party leaders and cadres, their possession will be transferred in the name of the Party. It is ...

Army and Nepali
By Rajendra Keshari Pandey
My recollection of an incident which occurred some months ago in Kathmandu is interesting and different. What I am writing here may not bother someone, but this is a fact and people should keep in mind. It was a cool evening when I was returning home from a stroll. Suddenly what I see nearby my home is quite a number of army men in plain clothes. I was little bit anxious to know what was happening there. Since I could not get a clue, I ventured to ask one of the gentleman why they were there. I ...

You look like a Nepali
By Amar Adhikari
Some of the conversations you had with people leave indelible imprints in your mind. This was one of them.
Around ten years back, I was in a conference in Germany, where I met a guy from Netherlands. He asked shaking my hand, “What is your name?”
I answered, “Amar and yours”.

Fuelling the fire in Terai
By Indra Dhoj Kshetri
Continued Communal unrest in southern Terai may be a serious indication that how the reactionary forces can fish in the troubled water. Few months back, Nepal’s pro-King and honorary ADC to King Gyanendra Bharat Keshar Singh held a meeting with Indian Hindu Fundas at Gorakhpur. They collectively resolved to launch protests with communal slogans and work for upholding Nepal as HINDU KINGDOM. Immediately, the prelude was observed in western city of Nepalgunj during strike called by Nepal ...

Hair
By Mabi Singh
I wrote this in 2004.
Place: a Library in Boston
Duration: 30-45 minutes
I was trying hard to study for my exams in a public library . A pretty girl probably in her twenties came and sat in front of the table where I sat.
I could not stop looking at her and you may want to call it stalking.
She was wearing a tank top with spaghetti lace with straps of undergarment visible. She took out her cell phone from the pocket book and looked at it and kept it over the table, near the ...

Yogis and Scientists
By Amar Adhikari
Despite people try to show a yawning gap between yogis and scientists, I can find many similarities rather than differences. In my opinion, true yogis of this age are in fact scientists and what they have done for the society far outweighs that contributed by the yogis. In this writing, I would like to point out the similarities, and illustrate that scientists are better than yogis. Additionally, I would like to propose that the scientific knowledge is ,in fact, the extension of Veda, and thus ...

Surendra wanted to take this short cut to Bhandarthumka
Arduous is the word that best summarizes the hike of last Sunday. It certainly pushed me to the extremes of physical and psychological limits. It asked many questions of me. Focus, will power and sheer physical stamina were put to a severe test. There is always a limit to everything, that which, must be honored. However it is always nice to flirt with one’s mental strength and chip away small pieces of confines. A small victory of mind over matter, resolve fulfilled and deep sense of satisfaction.

Corporate Football - Goethals Alumni vs D2
By Prashanta Shrestha
Anupam scored a spectacular bhale goal as D2 came from behind to win 4-3 in a tight match played against the team from Goethals Alumni. In a match played in an unusually small-sized ground, D2 had no problems regarding stamina and created some problems from wide areas, especially from Sajan on the left and Asim (on loan for the match) on the right.

This unprecedented political development in Nepal has prompted me to write this blog. Readers please note that these are my personal observations and I may be completely wrong in my analysis.

Borat and the hypocricy of morality

On a sunny June afternoon what would you be doing? I don’t know. Maybe swimming, eating ice cream, selling lemonade or be freely frolicking outside in a huge field with your friends. Well, for Mary Aligus is was different. On sunny summer afternoons she might be doing the laundry, dishes or making beds. Not at her own home. (Even though she would be happier doing all of this in a home of her own.) Instead this happened in, “The Little Home of Unfortunate Angels.”? Oh how she wished she had, ...

A Slave Narrative
By Aarju Pandey
This is a peek into life in America as a slave. A window into America’s dark and dirty side. I have chosen, to make this narrative all the more interesting, to write this in southern dialect. If you do not understand the English here, it is because of that.
In school, I watched a movie with my classmates. This was an insight into slave life and just how horrible and terrifying it was. After watching those slave narratives, I was inspired to write my own slave narrative as a way to assess to ...

Zenos is a 13 year old boy that possesses interesting powers. He had the strength of 100 men, yet he is only a child. Zenos lived in a little tree house, as did all the children in Ubbi Forest. Corporate Football - TUN vs D2, second leg
By Prashanta Shrestha
A string of goalkeeping errors was the key as D2 players succumbed to another disappointing 4-0 defeat in the second leg against TUN. It was a lackluster first half though as both team failed to create any clear-cut chances. D2 appeared better organized than the previous encounter as they managed to keep some possession and contain TUN to very few shots on target but the front pair was unable to make any impact on the opponent’s half. D2 resorted to hopeful long balls at the front which kept ...

Prachanda : Plan A and Plan B

A few days back I was reading eKantipur. A headline something along this line “First time access for Maoist to Parliament ” caught my eyes. For a moment, I had a strange feeling in my stomach. I could not think of anything, and then slowly everything started falling into place. At least, for me.
Despite everything progressing well between seven party alliance and Prachanda, something inside me always keeps telling that “it is too good to be true”.

Smokers, Beware! Nepal is legislating anti tobacco laws
By Indra Dhoj Kshetri

After the legislation comes into effect, it will be pretty difficult for the smokers openly exhaling smokes in public places.
This shall be an embarrassing news for the smokers and tobacco users in the country. However, Nepal has moved towards legislating anti tobacco laws that will ultimately affect the production, sale and consumption of tobacco. Besides, it will be pretty difficult for the smokers to continue their habit as they have been doing. The House of Representatives has recently ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). This ratification entails certain obligations to Nepal government to make certain laws and formulate policies and plans to regulate and control the consumption of tobacco.

Science Vs. Religion
By Akriti Panthi
For thousands of years we have been arguing about what to believe in science or religion. For scientists it’s always been god doesn’t exist there is no proof; for the other side it’s been you have lost faith. Is proof really needed to say god exists? Many have claimed that they have seen or heard god but when they explain it (it doesn't sound right) are they lying for attention or is it the seer truth? Do you believe in Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Chinese traditional religion, Buddhism, Darwinism, atheist, agnostic, etc.

Where's my kick pedal??
By heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)
The makers of Suzuki GN 125 made a beautiful motorbike. They made it so it would look good, run great, and be very comfortable to ride and to be a passenger in as well. They put in a self-start system like they should. Why they left out the kick pedal is beyond me.
Of course, this bike became a huge success. Naturally, all custom bikes built based on this design followed it verbatim, none more so than a little known Chinese company called Sinski. They even went so far as to leave the kick ...

Moral Values and Duties: Some thoughts
By Amar Adhikari
First of all let me admit that I am neither an anthropologist nor an economist. However, one question that has always bothered me from the childhood why our country is poor and what could be done. This became my part time hobby, and I read many books I could lay my hands on. As a result, I came to some conclusions, and out of which some I tried to share on “Why our country is poor: Some thoughts”. After all, in order to put our country on right track we need to analyze and find out how we arrived at this abysmal situation.
Thanks to a few comments on my writing, I realize the necessity of providing supporting examples that religion and philosophy exert tremendous amount of influence in the building of moral values, which in turn serve the basis of justification for many people’s action. It is worth stressing that if these moral values confirm to daily duties, the resulting productivity is phenomenon. Industrial revolution was, in fact, the upshot of this confluence.

Corporate football - TUN vs D2
By Prashanta Shrestha
D2 started its corporate football league with clash against Tundikhel United, the team formed three years ago when people from various areas of interest started practicing together every week in the Tundikhel ground. Having been formed only a year back D2, on the other side, lacked enough match practice as they tumbled to a 4-2 loss at IOE, Pulchowk ground against the more experienced side from Tundikhel. It was an entertaining match though, played between two halves of 35 mins each, with goals coming in at frequent intervals. D2 appeared to be more organized at the beginning and took an early lead capitalizing on the mistake of the makeshift goalkeeper Samesh Joshi. The goalkeeper was completely deceived by the bounce on the hard and uneven ground of Pulchowk and Asim was on hand to head it home.

Addiction - Smoke when you see a hippo
By Ritesh Khanal
Science always tries to define biological phenomena as if to isolate the scientific terminologies from the human body itself. An increase in the level of ‘x’ chemical will produce ‘y’ substance in the body, which produces an electric sensation in ‘z’ nerve. A decrease in the volume of that same chemical will cause drowsiness and nausea and a labrat gets addicted to chemical ‘x’. Something seems to be missing in these explanations, something that connects the chemicals, the sensations and the human being.

2007 rhymes
By Dovan Rai
This new year eve,
I realized my heart growing cold,
with cynicism : an adult infection.
Trapped in this adult world,
so grey and so cold,
I longed for the old days,
when the sky is clear blue and grass is naïve green,
rainbows are purely colorful,
snails are innocently fascinating, and I am always cheerful.
Oh ! only if I could borrow a bit of this childhood heaven
in this new year 2007 !!

Fare..thee..well
By Loona Grg
Fare..thee..well Suddenly an overheard phrase stroke my grey cells, it was said by my friend just a few moments ago while we were in tea break. I wonder, how the climate affects a person’s mind and the thoughts. It’s a gloomy day today out here in Kathmandu, for some it may be a romantic day, for some it may be a dull day and for some it may be a hectic day :could have never took a chance to think about the climate. Weather becomes a real hot topic while tea gathering, and its natural phenomenon.

Do we value only what we struggle for?
By Akriti Panthi
"That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly. It is dearness only which gives everything its value."
-Thomas Paine
Throughout history we have always been greedy; some say it’s a curse and others a gift but truly it is both because without it we wouldn’t be who we are. Maybe the world would be better or worse but we can only deal with what we have. For the British, French, and Spaniards it was land during the times of the American Revolution but, now for everyone in the world our greed is now money. If someone was throwing free money in the air in the middle of the streets; who wouldn’t be out there trying to get something free? Did we ever stop by to think how long the owner of the money took his time to earn all of that? I agree with Thomas Paine if we gain something without any effort of work it doesn’t mean that much to us if we did spend our time gaining what we have.

Top three visionary moves for New Nepal
By Rudra Pandey
Last week I was in the tropical Hawaiian Islands with my family, for a winter getaway. The kinds of infrastructure development they have done really inspired me to write this quick note. Hawaii is America’s 50th state and is definitely the number #1 tourist destination for Americans and others visiting America. I could easily believe that after I saw its white sand beaches and amazing culture. What’s more is that there is the inviting Pacific right outside your front door. The people who live in Hawaii really rely on tourists and a lot of jobs there are tourist service related. This is because the state’s number one industry is tourism and the second is military related as it has 14 different military bases. Comparing Hawaii to the other tropical islands like Fiji, Mauritius, and many others, I can positively say that none of them have accomplished what Hawaii has. I think this is because of the visionary moves set by the democratically elected government. That’s why it is said that “American democracy is not good – but it’s the best in the world we have so far.” These leaders know how to set vision and move forward without worrying about little things. Leaders must trust others to get the little things done and launch the BIG visionary things to set the tone of the nation in the right direction.
