Should schools start later in the day?
By: Akriti Panthi
“Without enough sleep, we all become tall two-year-olds,” said Jojo Jensen but not is it tall two-year olds or aging teenagers?
Should high schools start later in the day just to give teens a longer time to sleep? Many studies have been done saying that teens don’t ever get enough sleep and many car accidents occur of sleep deprivation. Teens feel more alert at a later time and using that most schools could get a better grade at school instead of trying to get some sleep in the class. If schools started later when a teen would be able to have their life; once they get home its homework, work, etc. Yes, high schools should start at a later time to let teens catch up on their sleep to get better grades, to stay out of sleep deprivation, and to keep them healthy.
Most teens feel more awake during the last couple periods of their class then their morning classes. Many of them admit to taking a nap in their first couple of periods. Well, if they answered that truly then if they’re fast asleep will their grades turn out good? The later the class the more likely the teen would be alert. If teens were allowed to do this then it’d be like spoiling them. Well, not exactly it is for their health and if the school could get the students grades up, the kids could go to a good college and have a better life. Better grades could do a lot to raise the students and school’s reputation.
Sleep deprivation is one of the most common problems in teen life. A study has been shown that a teen’s biological clock slows down at that age; which makes it harder for them to fall asleep and wake up. At this rate most teens will end up getting 5-8 hours of sleep due to happening to wake up for school at around 6am. Teens that drive to school in the morning is at even a worse rise because their circadian clock makes it feel like they are driving drunk. They should be able to have enough self control and sleep the 8-10 hours they need. It’s not really their fault that their clocks are run at a different time then a child’s or an adult. I mean yes they should be reasonable and know enough is enough and most do. Sleep deprivation is something that most teens need to get out their way.
The healthier the better anyone is off; with teens having a lack of sleep many functions in their bodies can go wrong. For one, they can get obsess because they are too tired to exercise. It can also damage the memory making it hard in school. Plus, with no sleep many teens can be depressed, or very moody. With all this said, then why don’t teens just take a pill and go to sleep so they will be healthy? A sleeping pill makes it very hard on the teen because the side affects still get them to be very moody and they could get addicted. Adults want their kids to be healthy right?
If did change the school times then it would make many things better. Teen would be more alert in class and get better grades. They wouldn’t be as moody, tired, or depressed. More freedom and responsibility would be put on their shoulder, as they got ready for college. This one chose would be helpful many students attending high school.

"early to bed and early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise." Wake up girl! Do not be lazy. I used to wake up at 3 AM when I was teenager. I am pretty successul person now.

Akriti,
This is an interesting idea. I must say that I wholeheartedly agree with Yeatai Ho, though. It is up to the student if they want to work hard and taste success or sleep and strangle your education. This is what "teenagers" and other students should keep in mind.

yes Akriti, your laziness shud be appreciated.I agree to Yestai ho again like in other comments he posts elsewhere in this blog, making it alive.

I would sleep upto 12 if school starts at 12:15, school time has not to do anything...It only the matter if you are active or lazy..

Teens should not be allowed to drive by law!!! Let them commute by public trans. and I believe many states do that.

Aren’t you guys being a little denoted here? Sleep=GOOD...you say you woke up at 3 in the morning then what time would you sleep? And maybe you guys are right that we are lazy but what's wrong with it if we can argue our way through for being lazy. It isn't our faults that our clocks slow and speed up differently. I mean I go to sleep around 11:30-2 during schools nights and I wake up around 6-6:30 in the morning.
If school times got pushed back, then how much easier could it get!

Akriti Panthi, donot get disillusioned by 'thotra budaharuka thotra kura'.
Yestai ho le 3 baje uthera payeko safalta sabailai saandarvik hudaina.
This is a scientific fact that we all have our biological clock. But I donot know if this can be reset.
I too am a night owl .I have expressed the magnificience of night in 'http://www.everestuncensored.org/archives/2006/04/post.html'.
I missed almost all my morning classes in my bachelors.
I have nothing to say about the idea of the article.
But I appreciate the writer's effort to question and think beyond the box.

It is the quest for truth greater than the truth itself.

Lekhak, I don't agree with about teen's not being able to drive because in some states the public transportation is excellent whereas in some states and cities public transportation will not take people to place they need to go. In addition, buses come very late and should students penalized for buses coming late. Furthermore, there are some students who live more then 10 to 15 miles away from the school, if they have to count on the bus and if the miss the bus or the bus comes late then they will miss the first class.

State and schools should manage that. They are teens and need to learn a lot by hardworking. Teens don't have patience, otherwise a 12 year boy can also be driving. It is easy.

Akriti Panthi ji,you are telling that high school should start later in day to improve the academic grade up by improving the mood, tireness, or depressement of teens.ok i am agree with that statement but what about the timing period??i mean if school start later the students get less time in the school and what would be the impact of this??

Most schools aren't that rich and the state doesn't provide enough money for transportation like that. It is basically impossible to say that they need to manage it, where are they going to go get the money?
Bibash
I am not saying the school time should be reduced just moved back a little bit. Instead of teens having to wake up at 6 am to catch the bus or drive to school. That they should be allowed to sleep in until 7 or 8 and school times can be pushed back a little bit.

Akriti Panthi ji,if the school time is moved a little bit back, then they should stay for long time at night coz they have to finish their homework. Then their sleep time remains unchange.so it is useless to push the school time a little bit back, isn't it?
By: Bibash | December 28, 2006 08:54 AM
No because teens don't spend a lot of thier time doing homework, most teens like to have a social life. If the times got pushed back in the morning then teens would beable to catch up on sleep. It would make a difference.

By: Purnima | December 29, 2006 02:34 PM

yes, nice purnima i like the last question.Really she(i mean writer)will feel that topics is for the sake of making topic not for the matter..that actually concerned coz it's unreasonable.....hahaaaa
By: Bibash | December 29, 2006 05:37 PM
-Bibash
Unreasonable? Of course, you don't me but ummm have you researhed on this topic? Many schools have changed their high school times to later time. Most of those school's students have agreed that they feel more alert, better, and they want to learn more then sleep in the first three of their classes. The school's grades on tests have gone up.
Please, next time you say something like that, know what your talking about.

Akriti I am 100% with you on this one. Elementary school should start earlier because anyways younger people are going to go to sleep much earlier then high school or middle school kids/teens. And I am only in 4th grade and I have to wake up at 6:30 am. And my brother being in High School he has to wake up at 5:45 am. I really do think school should start earlier for the the older kids/teens. And not all of this has to do with me having being student too that has to wake up too early.
By: Bishakha | January 28, 2007 05:01 PM
Maybe it does have to do with kids being lazy. But the reason they are lazy is because school starts too early! Ever though of that?? And some it's sometimes the schools fault that the kids are lazy. Wondering how? Well here,
1. In school teachers give far too much homework for a student to handle.
2. Making the student stay up until, 9-12ish.
3. Teachers wont take excuses so the child is FORCED to do the homework unless the kid wishes to fail.
4. Then the student will have to wake up again early in the morning so they will be lazy and fall asleep in class... "zzz"
So it really almost is the school's fault the students are lazy. (If they are lazy.)
