Evil prevails

"You know who's gonna inherit the earth? Arms dealers- because everyone else is too busy fighting with each other."

The movie Lord of War is lucky enough to have managed its way into the hallowed list of my top ten favorite movies of all time. It is truly one of the best movies I have seen in a long, long time. The movie chronicles the life of Yuri Orlov, an international arms dealer (portrayed by Nicolas Cage). The character of Orlov is written extremely beautifully and can be described best with the word SOULLESS.

"I sell to leftists, rights; I'd even sell to pacifists- but they wouldn't make much regular customers."

Orlov buys and sells weapons from and to weapons dealers and warlords all over the world. In the process he gets richer and more powerful everyday, and his soul dies little by little. Throughout the movie one is able to somehow feel sorry for Orlov knowing that people like him are actually pretty clearly "responsible for all evils of the world."

Particularly, a scene near the end where Orlov and his brother are in the middle of a weapons deal with a Sierra Leone warlord is quite awesome. A few hundred meters away from where they're doing the deal, Orlov's brother sees some soldiers cutting some refugees up with a machete. He realizes that as soon as they hand over the guns to these people, the refugees would not stand a chance. His conscience comes into play and he tries to "save" the refugees by blowing up the weapons supply. He only manages to destroy half the supply before he is shot dead by one of the warlord's men.

Orlov watches as his brother dies, takes half the diamonds worth of the supply, and leaves.

The scene progresses to show the soldiers then shoot dead all the refugees in the camp. The narration then progresses: "They say evil prevails when good men fail to act. What they ought to say is: evil prevails."
