New National Anthem for New Nepal

By Binaya Neupane

November 30, 2006

In the aftermath of the restoration of Democracy, now widely told as Loktantra, Nepal promised to change its previous national anthem which was just a salutation song for the King. Its lyrics was composed by Chakrapani Chalise (Shreeman Gambhira Nepali Prachanda Pratapi Bhupati) and music by Bakhatbir Budhapirthi adopted in 1899. However, the parliamentary proclamation declared to change the National anthem and new national anthem has been recommended by a Committee formed to choose it.

Latin Transliteration of Previous
Shri man gumbhira nepali prachanda pratapi bhupati
Shri pach sarkar maharajadhiraja ko sada rahos unnati
Rakhun chi rayu eeshale praja phailiyos pukaraun jaya premale
Hami nepali bhaeesarale.

The new national anthem is selected from a total of 1272 different proposed songs from all over the country. As per The National Anthem Selection Task Team (NASTT) the Byakul Maila’s song has led the list. The coordinator and culture expert Satyamohan Joshi said; “we have accomplished the job assigned to us by the bureau” and added there is no partiality in the process; the new National Anthem was selected without knowing the name of its writer.

The stench of reality

By heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

November 30, 2006

This reality reeks of filth. Not that I'm aware of any other reality that does not. But rationale forces me to realize that there cannot be a singular reality. Just the fact that I am able to conceive of the idea rightly justifies it. And it is rationale that dictates to me that even though my existence is confined to this reality; I, as I truly am, span all realities. This does not apply to my physical state, my mind or consciousness nor my spirit - but something else that I am unable to conceive of due to the very fact that my existence is confined to this reality.

Forgotten and forgiven evils: Top ten Corrupt Politicians

By Indra Dhoj Kshetri

November 30, 2006

“Both sides agree to adopt policy to severely punish people amassing properties by means of corruption while remaining in government posts.”

The above mentioned lines are from Clause 3.11 of the Comprehensive Peace Accord signed by the Nepal government and the Maoists on November 21. On those lines, both the sides have expressed their commitments to severely punish those corrupts. However, the latest developments from politics to judiciary are proving that those words also may just be the high rhetoric. Both the sides have failed to convince people that they are really serious on punishing those evils. Some people have taken this as a commitment to punish those remaining in government posts during the Royal regime, while others have taken this just as a tool to eyewash the general public.

Standardizing culture

By heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

November 29, 2006

In my field of study and work, standards play a big role. A lot of what could otherwise be chaos has been delicately held together by standards and protocols. As miraculous as it sounds, a big bunch of people actually agreed to follow a common path!!

Now, if you put two people in a room, conflict is bound to arise. It is inevitable and, as a matter of fact, a microcosm of all the conflict across the globe today. Even though wisemen of our time will say that ultimately it's all about the money or the power; one cannot discount the fact that culture has a lot to do with it. I dare to go as far as to say that the very thing that makes the human race so diverse is the cause for all of its conflict.

On the banks of Khando

By Sanjib Chaudhary

November 29, 2006

It was the seventh day of Dashami (the greatest Hindu festival), the day preceding the sacrifice of animals to Durga, the Goddess of power. The incessant rains had stopped and the sky was partly clear with patches of black clouds hovering around, signalling for the rains still to come. Among the clouds peeked the moon gaining its full form day by day for the coming full moon day. The entire village slept in serenity. The bamboo leaves swayed to the light breeze and bats could be seen moving stealthily in search of prey. An owl was hooting in the far horizon. The banks of river Khando was dry and the sands seemed silvery with the partial moonlight. The recent floods had brought more alluvial soil and the banks had widened, the sands had got a washing. A crab could be seen crawling towards the receding water.

On governance

By heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

November 28, 2006

No form of governance thought up by man is really any good. The much hyped democracy is an unachievable ideal at best. In which of today's so-called democracies do the people actually hold the strings? A democratic system is like a fragile piece of machinery held together by millions of loose nuts and bolts, and is doomed to shatter. Sure, democracy would work perfectly in a world where all men thought well of each other. But in such a world, who's to say any other system wouldn't work equally well?

Then you have dictatorships and monarchies which we can rule out just by pure reason and rational logic. Communism and fascism are oppressionist systems and have no place in a sane world. Since religion itself is evil by nature, any form of governance associated with religion is naturally evil. On the economic front, capitalism does lead to progress but tramples too many on the way. Socialism is another unachievable ideal and history is witness to how every state that has tried it out has failed to stick to its ideals, either being unable to sustain itself or turning into hardcore communism. Then there is the notion of "socialist democracy" – two unachievable ideals in one – need I say more?

Second issue of Y! . It’s better.

By Dovan Rai

November 28, 2006

y2.jpg
Quite impressed with the first issue of ‘Y!’, a new Nepali youth magazine, I was eagerly awaiting for the second issue, which I found better.

Y! seemed to come with a serious purpose. It was reflected in the first issue in it’s bold cover design(which caught my eyes first), carefully planned content and intellectually stimulating articles.
The average ‘I hate politics’ youth too have now realized how vital politics is and how it impacts our studies, career, life and destiny.
Y! has cashed in the new burning interest of youth in politics and provided the youth with a platform for politics and activism.
Y! has actually fulfilled most of the requirements of a good youth magazine that I was looking for.
Bilingual medium is very practical and promoting Nepali literature is an appreciable approach.
By raising cultural and social awareness issues, it has carried the true essence of being youthful and modern.

Nepal

By Akriti Panthi

November 27, 2006

Nepal

My ancestors and my blood from the one place I treasure
Thinking, talking, and visiting that dear place is always a pleasure
From Mount Everest to Japha I go
Every piece of land I bow to

One of the smallest countries with one of the biggest disaster
Maoists running back and fro to master to master
The country folk all ran into one city
What a pity, a great fight wasn’t given
For houses, traditions became forgotten

Katmandu that city was trashed
Old buildings where smashed
New houses were built
Katmandu became the New York City but no one felt guilt
The government didn’t give a bit
All they did was sit, watched people die

Their children and all they did was sighed “bye”
My country, my home, and my people
Many prayed on the steeples
Thank the gods for now peace has rang
Nepal is another great place to hang

My ancestors and my blood from the one place I treasure
Thinking, talking, and visiting that dear place is always a pleasure
From Mount Everest to Japha I go
Every piece of land I bow to

Politics, Health and our Professional Responsibility

By Mathura Shrestha

November 27, 2006

1. Public concern, their scrutiny, transparency and accountability of health and medical professionals
Today, we together with other peoples of Nepal have fought and realized Loktantra. We envision Loktantra as the highest form of republican democracy of the people and by the people. As the word implicates Loktantra can have none above or bellow Lok or peoples and peoples’ world. A monarchy in any form or any other creed-based superstructure is out of question in Loktantra. We, the people of Nepal, are not praja of prajatantra but fully sovereign, responsible citizen of Nepal. The established norm of Lok accepts no exclusion or deprivation of citizens by gender, geographical region, ethnicity, religion, political or social orientation, physical or socioeconomic state or condition.

Life

By Akriti Panthi

November 27, 2006

You came into this world
Yet it wasn’t your choice to be unfurled
With tons of love you grew
And did you stop by to say thank you?

Your dear loved ones
Always in a run
But they always managed to spend time with you
All that time your life speed through

In school you went
You kept learning as you grew
Studying and studying was your job
It was meant so you didn’t become a slob

College came in no time
You learned the importance of a dime

A conversation with a preacher

By heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

November 27, 2006

People who know me well know that I am a believer and follower of God, and an equally strong HATER of religion. I think religion is an evil, hypocritical practice that misinterprets God in every sense of the word.

Oddly enough, I ran into this Christian preacher in a chatroom!!

So I humored him for a while --- the following is the exact chat transcript. My handle is "Heretic". The preacher is "NEPAL123_366". Read on, people!!

nepal123_366: hi
heretic: hello
nepal123_366: where are you from
heretic: ktm
nepal123_366: ok i am from dehradun
heretic: have you ever noticed that most people are really really ugly
nepal123_366: are you a man or a woman and are you a nepali
heretic: i am a nepali, i am a man
nepal123_366: ok i am a pastor of a church as well as social worker]
heretic: and you're here to "spread the word" are you?

Gunter used Nepali athletes

By Random Gigs

November 24, 2006

A close (national coach) source reveals that German Coach Gunter had been prescribing MEDICINES to Nepali athletes while training them and that the medicine intakes were supposed to be lessened as the SAF Games began.

But in an alternate take, what medicine was the German Coach prescribing? Is that even moral? Does Nepal Sports Council even know about this?

Also, it is now intelligent to ask if Gunter was testing a drug here in the Himalayan Nation. Germany thus seems to have used Nepali athletes, as previsouly did USA to our armed forced personnel.

Our athletes who have taken these drugs should be monitored for their health, side effects of the drugs. Gunter and Germany should publicly apologize for this and should pay in KIND as compensation.

Whatever that KIND is whether it be in support of medical aid etc, if there are any cases filed of side effects arised from using GUNTER DRUGS and for destorying Bhandari's career.

A day with the Maoist army

By Indra Dhoj Kshetri

November 23, 2006

November, the 21st, the government and the Maoists were set to sign the much awaited peace accord. The accord was much awaited because; only this would formally end the Maoist violence in the country. All the people were keenly watching the developments in the capital. My colleagues were also requesting me not to miss the special signing function. Surely, it would have been an opportunity in the life of a journalist to attend the ceremony, because very few in very few countries get the privilege to attend such ceremony where the government and the rebels will declare that they have formally denounced war and will opt for a peaceful politics.

What really happened at BICC (& in my mind) on the Evening of November 21, 2006

By Gopal Bahadur Ghale

November 22, 2006

(Here goes my first attempt at Political Commentary, albeit Personal and somewhat Fabricated)

Girija Prasad and Pushpa Kamal, flanked by other peacemakers, solemnly sat on the dais as Krishna Prasad thirstily read out the contents of the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA).

At times, during the narration, Girija Prasad and Pushpa Kamal whispered to each other and let out restrained smiles. I wondered at the remarks they were possibly making and, at one instance, it appeared to me as if Pushpa Kamal was suggesting Girija Prasad that Krishna Prasad should have brought a cassette player and played a taped version of the CPA instead of going through the pains of croaking.

Management Guru

By Nilesh Shrestha

November 21, 2006

We are driven by God gifted instincts. We always react instantly to safety and then set habit to stay in comfort by keeping away from danger. One can rarely see a person not running away from a burning fire; one can rarely see a person not trying to cover up to warm up from cold and one can hardly see a person not eating when hungry. When we are hungry, we are forced to eat to survive and knowing that we need to eat, we eat regularly even if we do not feel hungry. If one does not do that then he is sick.

Have you ever consciously started your morning with the positive attitude? If you never have, you may want to give it a try tomorrow with the "Smiley good morning" to your co-worker. And, consciously monitor how you perform whole day. Believe me, it does the magic. As we know, we spent more than nine hours everyday at work and if it becomes unpleasant it would be mighty unproductive for you and for your employer.

Management Lesson: The Law of Diminishing Returns

By Milan Lamichhane

November 21, 2006

Time is time. No one can buy more time. You can buy more labor if you think it will help your team do more work faster, but that’s not the same thing as adding time to a project. The law of diminishing returns dictates that adding labor doesn’t exponentially increase productivity; in fact, at some point productivity can even go backwards.

For a real-life example, consider that two hardworking and experienced programmers working on a project. In order to finish the project on time, you decide to add one more programmer. Now the programmers may be completing the code more quickly, you decide to add six more programmers so that the project can be finished even sooner. You soon realize that although adding one programmer increased your productivity, adding six more only created chaos with creating a contentious environment. You reached the point of diminishing returns when you added six programmers.

Bottom line: You can’t build a house in a single day even with 100 people.

Maoists continue forceful recruitment

By EverestUncensored Correspondent

November 19, 2006

The continued recruitment drive in Nepal raises doubts over Maoist commitments to return to peaceful mainstream and respect to human rights.

Despite their readiness to sign the peace accord and commitments to come into the mainstream politics, the Maoists have been continuing forcible recruitment for their "Peoples' Liberation Army" (PLA) for the last few days. The reports from various districts across the country said, the Maoists have been intimidating the village youths, many of them school children to join their PLA.

Globalization: Is it a Threat or an Opportunity for Nepal?

By Siris Bajracharya

November 17, 2006

Business in the 21st century has been able to expand its boundaries overwhelmingly, regardless of the geographical constraints. The dream of an “international business community” has now slowly turned into reality. Today the world of business has been talking about expanding its boundaries globally. Now the competition is not only within the internal markets but among the external markets as well. Such a global perspective has introduced new opportunities as well as threats to the existing market. The internal markets of most underdeveloped and developing countries have been threatened to be wiped off against the breeze of global competition.

Thinking Strategically -- Key to Market Management

By Siris Bajracharya

November 17, 2006

strategic thinking.gifOne very fine morning, my boss comes to me and says, “Here is what we want to do and here is how we are going to do it.....!” Sounds simple? This simple definition of strategy may sound effortless but it is not honestly simple because a lot of thought and work would go into the development of such business strategies.

A firm that attempts to sell a product or a service must have a plan and strategize its every move in order to sustain in the long run. The definition of strategy is: the guiding plan that integrates a firm’s major goals that has superior efficiency, quality, innovation, and customer responsiveness. A good business strategy will incorporate such concepts with a clear understanding of adopting the marketing concept, market opportunity analysis, and developing a sustainable competitive advantage. Strategies should be made keeping in mind of the fact that - all marketing begins with deprivation. A business is successful if we are able to understand the concept of fulfilling the deprived space.

Decisions

By Rudra Pandey

November 17, 2006

The worst decision makers are killers. With one decision, they jeopardize other’s lives, and sometimes their own too. Best decision makers are those who save lives by helping people in crisis.

Everyone makes a few bad decisions once in a while. Some of us repeat them very often and some of us learn from it and avoid making such kind of decisions in the future. What happens after a bad decision? How can we avoid bad decision? Should we be too careful? Should we avoid making decision because of possible negative consequences? These questions always make me ponder. I have made a few bad decisions both in personal and professional lives. I still regret everyday about some of the decisions that I have made years back. I feel like “Oh god - how dumb I was?” I wish I could recall those decisions. Obviously, it is too late to recall as damage has already been done. I feel like hitting my forehead against the wall and screaming out loud – “why did I do so?”

The Art of Lovemaking (and Management)

By Gopal Bahadur Ghale

November 17, 2006

Well, we were asked to write an article each on Management and I decided to consult some Greek Gods for some insights into some Management Mantras. Hence I traveled all the way to Athens and managed to meet Hephaestus and Aphrodite; others were on vacation. Following the principle of ‘Pilgrimage to Pashupatinath, Trade of Tuna’, I requested Aphrodite to throw some light on the secrets of lovemaking while Hephaestus revealed the secrets of successful management.

I offer to you here the excerpts of the great tips I was provided with:

Management in home – Workplace is to apply it

By Thakur Gyawali

November 17, 2006

I am tired of reading many books and listening to different discussions on management. "What is management? What managers do?" like questions, are not significant to me. This is similar to Nepalese politicians trying to define "What is democracy and what is Lok Tantra?. There are many problems and issues that are making everything stagnant. Even the things are worsening every minute that you are very aware about and you are trying to define what our democratic system’s name is. Opps...I can just say that I would have fired those people if I were authorized to. At least we engineers talk more on Why and How questions. To be honest, what I learnt from life without caring about management is much more than what I studied about it. So, it is better to focus on how things can be made better. I believe management quality is an inherent capability to some extent but it is more driven from interest and learning from every incidents that you experience or see in life. I just recalled a real story of a 20 yrs old girl. Here it goes...

The crown and the Rayamajhi Commission

By Indra Dhoj Kshetri

November 17, 2006

If the rayamajhi Commission fails to recommend appropriate action against all the perpetrators inclusing King Gyanendra; history will not forgive them

Rayamajhi Commission seems to failThe same happened what people didn’t want but expected. Ever in the history of Nepal, the Rayamajhi Commission formed to investigate the atrocities of the erstwhile Royal government was supposed to address people’s aspirations and recommend proper punishment against the perpetrators. Upon its formation, the commission members also made roars that anybody found guilty on suppressing the popular movement is brought to the book. The Commission Chairman Krishna Jung Rayamajhi himself said they will not spare even the King if found involved on suppressing popular movement and embezzling nation’s fund. King’s involvement was crystal clear as he was the chairman of the then Council of Ministers. And even a layman could not believe that any move of the then government was taken without his consent.

What is Management?

By Kumar Pradhanang

November 17, 2006

There isn’t any clear definition of management. This is something that evolved right from the time human beings existed. Only the way of managing things have changed. The human development was slow right from the medieval period to the 18th century. It really started picking up in the 20th century due to change in the management style.

From my past experience there are three tips I could give to be a part of a good management team.

1. Anyhow solve the puzzle, which could also mean getting from A to D without having to step into B and C.
2. If something needs to be done, just do it. Let others follow you rather than waiting for others to start
3. Think simple.

A Chronicle of Growth

By Sajan Sangraula

November 17, 2006

Empires are not built ‘as is’. They evolve from startups. But only a meager fraction of the startups make it up to the empirical formations.

As startups, it’s usually a bunch of people with an idea to stick to working for their own sake. People involved are mostly stakeholders and have a participatory role; their growth is directly proportional to that of the company. With the number of people in some lower 2 digits, there isn’t a high hierarchy of roles that separate personals involved. People are accessible. The faces are familiar, the workplace is habitual and there is positivity and optimism in the air.

By Ritesh Khanal

November 17, 2006

Looking at the gold plated sign that read “SHARKS” in big fancy letters and sipping my coffee, I remembered how hard it was to get here and yet easier to make the decision. “You wanna know why I chose Sharks instead of Elite-W” I had tried to explain to the whole team, especially to Dev, who had left the hall after I announced that we were going to Sharks for our project. “I know why, it’s because you lead the team and you wanna prove to all of us that it’s only your decision that counts”

Things to remember... A management lesson

By Subodh Gurung

November 17, 2006

Management! What to write on management? C’mon, I’m an engineer. How can I write an article on management? These were the questions that struck me when trying to write something on the term “Management". I tried looking over internet, even tried to study management books, but all was in vain. 5 days past and still not a single word has been typed. Then last night, I decided to write on my own way; my own way of explaining the meaning of management. Some might not like my views but they certainly won’t disagree either.

Greed is Good. Gekko is God. A lesson in management.

By heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

November 17, 2006

I've recently been told to write something – anything – on management. It is a topic quite removed from my usual line of literature. I am used to writing about things that are darker, vaguer and more abstract. Management, as something to write about, is too mainstream for me. It's lucky for me then that I read a lot of books and watch even more movies; and it's really, really lucky for me that I happened to have watched a classic by the name of Wall Street.

But somewhere, I feel - NO, all men are not created equal. If I restrict my claim to the only feeling, which defines human beings, your emotions… the feelings that make people understand what is that essence in you which is preceded by your existence.

National Flag: Should it be changed?

By Binaya Neupane

November 15, 2006

National flags represent their respective nations in the international arena. So why they are meant to be unique symbol and a value for a country. National flags usually have to have some patriotic meaning representing the country and her people for the betterment and patriotism.

Why don’t we begin with a discussion over our national flag i.e. National flag of Nepal? The national flag of Nepal is the one and only one non-rectangular national and official flags in the world. If we track back the history for the origin of non-rectangular, triangular flag then it says: The Nepal’s flag is a simplified combination of two single streamers from different branches of the previous rulers, the Rana dynasty who controlled Nepal from the mid-19th century until 1951. The Rana rulers were entitled "Shri Teen" and "Maharajahs".

About a hundred years ago a Mark Lewis' grandfather was awarded with Victoria Cross for his bravery in the aggression on the Dagu Fort of China.

He stole the historical Dagu Bell and took it to England as war booty. On learning the actual history of the Bell, Mark Lewis apologized to the people of China on behalf of his dead grandfather and facilitated the return of the Bell-'a source of shame for both China and England'-to the actual owner, the Dagu Fort. He wrote, 'Let us just hope we do not have to see another wars'.

Divided OVER Deal: UML and Maoist fight each other for Existence

By Indra Dhoj Kshetri

November 13, 2006

No sooner the Maoist formally entered the peaceful mainstream; split has been seen with the UML. And division between these two parties may affect the future of the pact.

Divided OVER Deal
As the country seems overwhelmingly welcoming the historic deal between the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) government and the CPN Maoist, a split has been noticed among those signatories. Especially, the major Communist factions the Maoists and the UML are seen divided. And biases towards one another seem to surface. Especially, the UML seems to be dissatisfied with the post deal scenario. General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal has been attacked by his comrades and also from the ground level cadres for giving ‘more space’ to the Maoists. They have questioned if the Maoists had enough popularity or status to get equal seats with the UML in the interim legislature. Not only UML, but the Nepali Congress or other party people are also perplexed with this decision, especially Maoists’ position in the interim legislature. Their stance is that the Maoists haven’t so far been tested before the public and how could they get second position in the interim legislature followed by interim government.

US Dilemma: are Maoists still terrorists

By EverestUncensored Correspondent

November 10, 2006

Us flag.bmp
After the seven Party alliance government and the Maoists signed the historic deal Wednesday, almost all the friendly nations of Nepal including the EU members have welcomed it. The US also said it as a “good first step”. However, the latest developments in Nepal have created a great dilemma for the US. It has ever vociferously stood against the Maoists. It never wanted the Maoists came into the mainstream politics. However, after Wednesday’s deal it seems finding very little things to support its stance.

Evils of the nation: Top Ten defaulters uncovered

By Indra Dhoj Kshetri

November 09, 2006

This year’s annual budget for Nepal’s 25 million population amounted just 143 billion rupees. However, 53 Business groups and individuals have defaulted 25 billion rupees with two largest banks of the country. The money was deposited at the banks by the individuals who worked hard to earn their two squares of meal. Those groups borrowed the money from Nepal Bank Limited (NBL) and Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB). Both the banks are the government owned and the money kept there is people’s trustee. But no serious measures have been opted to make the defaulters to repay the money so far. For the first time, Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank of the country made public the name of 53 largest defaulters this August.

This week, the Everest Uncensored team had planned to make the hike shorter and easier in contrast to the regular hikes. So the team started from Surya Binayek thinking we would end the hike at Lakuri Bhanjyang climbing down to Lubhu. When we reached the Country Kitchen Resort at the Lakuri Bhanjyang we had a little rest thinking the hike was coming to an end. However, after taking some refreshment at the resort some of our team mates desired to ascend further. We all agreed to go further towards Godavari.

Okhreni to Chisapani to SundariJal Hiking

By Administrator

November 08, 2006

Last week, the Everest uncensored team wanted to explore the natural beauty of Okhreni. It is a bhanjyang (pass) lying approximately at the altitude of 2000m above the sea level. From the vantage point of deurali, the northern ridges of Phulchowki range can be seen rising from Panauti along the banks of Roshi and the trail from Sundarijal to deurali at Okhreni village is one of the best that the north of Kathmandu has to offer. The mountains Langtang (7246m), Dorje Lakpa (6988m), Dome Blanc (6830m), Gan Chenpo (6397m) are seen at the north. A mane (shrine of religious significance) can be found at deurali presumably constructed by Lama Priests. Furthermore during the month of Chaitra, it is said that a religious fest is organized. At the bhanjyang, there is an expansive lawn aptest for a camping ground. However a solo endeavor is not recommended due to ample stories of cattle being dragged by tigers and leopards from the Shivapuri National Park. Not to mention wild boars that can give a good chase when provoked.

finally, towards true democracy

By Daulat Jha

November 08, 2006

I have to admit, I am impressed. I hadn’t held high hopes for the summit talks to conclude in a positive note, let alone reach an agreement in the many contentious issues from arms management to the fate of monarchy. I also believed that talks for a temporary parliament would only provide with more hurdles making the whole process needlessly longer. I still think the intermediary parliament is a farce, but I was surprised that the parties settled even as dodgy an issue as the allocation of seats.

Done!

By EverestUncensored Correspondent

November 08, 2006

After the historic understanding between the Maoists and the seven parties Tuesday night, Nepal has ushered into a new era of peace and prosperity

Finally, they did. Seven months of internal homework and diplomatic exercises, five rounds of summit talks three rounds of formal talks and dozens round of informal talks between the Maoist and the government talks teams and 21 hours of rigorous discussions during fifth round of Summit talks that began Tuesday have resulted into a historic agreement. The historic Summit talks between the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) and the Maoists have finally reached an understanding paving way for formal entry of the Maoists into the peaceful political mainstream. The six point understanding agreement has addressed all the major issues including fate of monarchy, arms management, interim constitution, interim legislature, interim government and electoral system for Constituent Assembly.

Civil society gathered outside the talks venue to give pressure for the early settlement of the issues.

गिरिजालाई प्यारजंगको थैली र रुक्माङ्गदको क्रान्तिकारिता

By Devendra Gautam

CPI 2006 - Nepal Ranks 121st

By Daulat Jha

November 07, 2006

Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2006 is out, and I guess we Nepalese can be glad that we haven’t done any worse than before. But then, we haven’t done any better either. Nepal still has a score of 2.5 (10 being the least corrupt) and ranks 121 out of 163 nations. Bangladesh and Pakistan fare worse than us in South Asia. Most of the countries worse off than us are ‘failed states’ and extremely poor countries with a bad track record of human right abuses (like Iraq, Myanmar, Haiti and Sudan). The ranking is done on the basis of how rampant the people perceive corruption to be in the country.

Shame on Kathmandu people: Holy Bagmati turning into a repository for sewage and garbage

By EverestUncensored Correspondent

November 04, 2006

Bagmati is a sacred river to all the Hindu populace. It resides Pashupatinath, the holiest of all Shiva shrines, the ascetic God of Hindus, at its lap. It used to be the source of livelihood to people, fauna and flora living in the valley and down stream. It is still thought as a Holy place for Hindus to cremate, especially the Aryaghat. Thousands of people throng to Pashupatinath, with also the hope to take a dip into the river and take (drink) Jala (Sacred Water) from the river. When they see the pollution, many of them, I think abandon their thoughts. Yet, Bagmati water near Pashupatinath has been made cleaner.

Changa Chait and then some

By Rajendra Keshari Pandey

November 03, 2006

It was a bright autumn Saturday in October 2005, very similar to many other beautiful days often experienced in the Kathmandu Valley. We decided to visit our favorite place, Nagarkot, to get some of this wonderful fresh air. Arriving at our usual spot we wandered around taking in the serenity of the area.

Open Discussion –Worshipping Kumari

By Daulat Jha

November 02, 2006

The Supreme Court has suggested the formation of a committee to investigate the practice of Kumari worship in response to a petition that said the tradition violated human rights norms and that the chosen girls suffer from psychological damage. The Newari community maintains that it is a time honored tradition. Please use the comments section to discuss your views on the topic. Where should the line be drawn between accepting tradition and violating human rights?

Talks and the Congress Unification

By Rajen Budhathoki

November 02, 2006

It has been more than five months after the partial democracy restored and the peace talks were initiated. But people still do not feel the future secured. It seems that the ruling 7 party alliance and the Maoists have not realized people’s expectations who shed their blood during the Jan andolan –II against the autocratic Royal regime. It's the time for the leaders to be serious to materialize the dreams of the Jana Aandolan –II martyrs

Historic Peace Negotiation: Get Rid of Infantile Disorders and Move Forward

By Govinda Neupane

November 02, 2006

In Nepal, unemployment is increasing from every stratum. When the ceasefire came into effect, not only the Maoist and government armies have been staying away from fighting, perhaps, their political leadership has also got no meaningful job. Therefore, they have been busy staging political plays. It is strange that till today they have not been able to start any sorts of meaningful peace negotiations; rather they are spending time in teasing and testing each other. Perhaps, they were tired and thought to refresh a bit by organizing series of roundtables in a festive environment. These roundtables, at least, kept their workers, media persons, 'civil society' chieftains and several hundred onlookers busy. This became some sorts of political orchestra and the people participated in enthusiastically. Therefore, the negotiation exercises became no less than colorful Jatras (traditional public shows full of entertainment with a mix of singing, dancing and drumming).
