Peace process towards a 'logical end'

Despite the delays, the peace process in this week seems moving towards a logical end. Continuous consultations by both the sides; the seven parties and the CPN Maoists and the reactions indicate progress in the peace process. The confidence among each other also seems increasing. Maoist Supremo Prachanda, after consulting with the Prime Minister on Sunday, said that since “fruitful dialogues are going on” he expects all the matters to be settled within a week.

Chhath: The biggest festival of Mithilanchal people

The word “chhath” denotes the number 6 in Hindi. The festival is marked for four days beginning from the sixth day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Kartik. The festival of Chhath begins immediately after Tihar. It is the greatest festival of Mithilanchal (Janakpur area) people who speak Maithili. This year it began on Thursday and ended Sunday.

Who are true leaders?

This is a billion dollar question with no straight forward answer. If it had a straight forward answer, the world today would be a much better, safer, and desirable place. The answer is ambiguous and we get different answers from different people. Internally, every individual thinks he/she is a leader or at least has the capacity to be a leader if given a chance. Everyone has the desire to lead at some point in life. Some give up, while others continue to pursue till the last minute. If the answer to the question was clear, many would probably never try to be a leader following their self-assessment. I would like to try to search for an answer to this question. The answer is again my version – I am sure many of you may disagree with it or may appreciate it. There is no single quality that makes someone a leader. That would be like trying to simplify the answer by saying “someone with leadership quality is a leader.”

उपप्रधानमंत्री अमिक शेरचनको नेतृत्वमा रहेको जनमोर्चा नेपाल फेरी फुटेको छ। फुटपछि अब जनमोर्चा नेपाल तीन टुक्रामा बिभाजित भएको छ । छ जना सांसदको बलमा माओवादीको आड् लिएर उपप्रधानमन्त्रि र स्वास्थ्य मन्त्रि पड्काउन सफल भएका अमिक शेरचनसँग अब एक जना सांसद लिलामणी पोखरेलको मात्र समर्थन रहेको छ । यसअघि जेठमा चित्रबहादुर केसीको समूह अलग्गिएको थियो । विभाजनपछि जनमोर्चाका ६ सांसदमध्ये केसीसँग उनी आफैँ, डिलाराम आचार्य र हरि आचार्य सहित तीन सांसदहरुको समर्थन रहेको छ । हालै बिभाजित भएर चित्रबहादुर आलेको नेतृत्वमा 'जनमोर्चा नेपाल राष्ट्रिय सम्मेलन केन्द्रीय समन्वय समिति' गठन गरेको समुहसँग परि थापा र नवराज सुवेदी गरि दुई संसदहरुको समर्थन रहेको छ। तर पार्टीलाई फुटाएर पनि तिनै पक्षले एउटै नाम जनमोर्चा नेपाल नै प्रयोग गर्दै आईरहेका छन । यसरी 'जनमोर्चा नेपाल' को नाममा अब चित्रबहादुर आले, अमिक शेरचन र केसीले नेतृत्व गरेका तीन दल बनेका छन्।

WHO NEEDS AWARENESS?

9th September, 2006, 7 women either infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, have come all the way to capital from remote far western district of Doti to Kathmandu, voicing themselves in the media. This issue was just stirring for me. For Women in Nepal, it requires something more than courage to publicly declare their HIV status. "When you know you are on the verge, you automatically muster the confidence for your children. What else we had to lose?" say the courageous women.

गुड मर्निंग सर ! हाउ वाज योर ट्रिप ? भनेर सफा सुग्घर कपडामा सजिएकि हसिली फरासिली युवतीले सोध्दा होटलमा बस्न आउने बिदेशी वा स्वदेशी पाहुनाहरु आत्मीय भावनाको आभासका साथ खुशी हुन्छन । पाँच तारे होटलदेखि ताराबिहिन होटलहरु लगायत पर्यटकीय क्षेत्रका फास्ट फुडहरुले आफ्ना अतिथिहरु आकर्षित गर्नका लागि कर्मचारीहरुको यो बाह्य कलालाई निकै प्रश्रय दिएको पाइन्छ । भवनको सजावट र सफासुग्घर तथा टाईशुटमा जमेका कर्मचारीहरुको हाउभाउ देख्दा जो कसैलाई पनि उक्त स्थान आकर्षक लाग्न सक्छ । तर त्यहीँ काम गर्ने कर्मचारीहरुको वस्तविकताचाहिँ ज्यादै दुःखद हुन्छ । आन्तरिक आवश्यकताभन्दा पनि बाह्य देखावटका लागि व्यवस्थापनले वर्षको एकपटक दिने सर्ट पाइंट, टाई, जुत्ताले उनिहरुको वास्तविक आवश्यकता पुरा गर्न सकेको हुँदैन ।

The Time for Illumination

The festival of lights; TIHAR is one of the most sparkling and shining festivals of Hindus. The festival symbolizes for the wealth, light, prosperity, and peace; as we worship “Goddess Laxmi” and different appearance of the “Yama”. Throughout the fete the entire Nepalese house, village, cities and country itself will glitter with the decorated lit oil lamps, candles, electric bulbs etc. The night view of the Kathmandu in the day of “Laxmi Puja” is the view never has to miss from the top of the city; “swambu stupa” looks like a sparkling precious bowl.

Prolonged “Summit Talks”!!!

With the prolonged “Summit Talks”, dark clouds of pessimism have prevailed the Nepali politics. The sooner conclusion of the “Summit Talks” with a consensus to end the decade long conflict is today’s much awaited issue. However, it has now been a cock and bull story. The people have been desperately waiting for the conclusion. And nobody can escape from the trust that it is high on the agenda of every individual. Of course, the ‘ceasefire’ called by the Maoists and the Govt. seems to have successfully abolished the violence, murders and many more other terrifying acts. However, people now have begun to feel insecure owing to the deadlocks in the talks between the Govt. and the Maoists.

राजा ज्ञानेन्द्रले जनआन्दोलनमा भएका दमनका बारेमा छानबिन गर्न गठीत उच्चस्तरीय जांचबुझ आयोगलाई तोकिएको समयभित्र बयान दिन अस्वीकार गरेका छन । जनआन्दोलनमा भएका दमनमा तत्कालीन मन्त्री परिषद अध्यक्षको रुपमा राजाको भूमीका बारे प्रष्ट पार्न भन्दै रायमाझी आयोगले राजालाई गत बुधबार प्रश्नसहितको पत्र पठाएको थियो ।
निर्धारित समयमा दरबारको प्रतिक्रिया प्राप्त नभएपछि आयोगले राजाबिरुद्ध थप कदम भने नचाल्ने भएको छ । उसले सबुत प्रमाण र अन्य व्यक्तिहरुको बयानको आधारमा दोषी व्यक्तिलाई करवाहीको सिफारिशसहित् प्रतिवेदन बुझाउने बतएको छ । आयोगले कात्तिक दश गते सम्ममा आफ्नो प्रतिवेदन सरकारलाई बुझाउने तयारी गरिरहेको छ । प्रतिवेदन तयार गर्न आयोग पदाधिकारीहरु राजधानी बाहिर गोप्य ठाउँमा जाने बताएको छ ।

Kakani toTarkeshowr to Panchmane Hiking

On October 15, the team had planned to go for a short hike from Raniban to Jamacho. They were, of course, unaware of the fact that the army had closed the area down. This was a blessing in disguise, however, as the team headed towards Kakani for a hike that would be longer, much more interesting and much more fun – and not just because Kakani is associated with JAITI, which, in turn, is associated with bhaam majja.

Delayed Talks, Desperate people and Dipawali festival

After the summit talks commenced between the Seven Party Alliance and the CPN Maoists, people thought Nepal’s transition is shortening. They cultivated hopes that decade long conflict will soon come into a formal end and Nepal will enter into the age of peace and prosperity. The first day declaration of constituent Assembly Polls by Mid June next year enlivened those hopes. Besides, the high rhetoric of the government and Maoist negotiators made people think that something is being cooked and they’ll soon be informed.

Lumbini - World Heritage and an abode of peace

Lumbini (Sanskrit for "the lovely") is a Buddhist pilgrimage site located in Rupandehi District, Lumbini Zone of Nepal near the Indian border. It is the birth place of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism and preacher of world peace, who lived between approximately 563 BC and 483 BC. Lumbini is located 25kms east of the Krishnanagar municipality of Kapilavastu, the place where the Buddha grew up and lived up to the age of 29. Kapilvastu is the name of place as well as the neighboring district.

Global Extremism, Bloodsheds, Destructions and a Ray of Hope

The world politics has entered into a complex phase. Ethics and values have been disappearing. The lust for power has overshadowed major socio-political and economic issues. Strangely, religious, political or any other type of extremism has been playing the role of a driving force. The pseudo-religious Messiahs and elected or self-made emperors, who proclaim themselves as super democrats, have been littering the world. These litterbugs are responsible for unimaginable miseries, large-scale destructions and colossal loss of precious human lives. The al-Qaeda terror network took refuge on Islam to advance its mission of taking revenge against the west, particularly against the most arrogant super power, the United States of America. The al-Qaeda's Islamic fundamentalism got befitting reply from equally blind, intolerant and hegemonic political fundamentalism of the US ruling clique led by Bush and Cheney.

Palpa district, a part of Lumbini zone, is one of the seventy-five districts of Nepal. The district, with Tansen as its district headquarters, roads leading to Butwal, Pokhara and Ridi, covers an area of 1,373 sq km and approximately 236 thousands of people. Very recently, I evaluated myself and discovered that I am able and agile by physique and for lack of a better term, deranged by nature. Twisted, weird and sometimes ugly - yes; I never considered myself evil, though. You see, to be evil - you have to judge… you have to judge everything that appears on your path; and not just the countenance, the very insides - the deep caverns of whatever it is. Tihar Grandeur I: Let’s use Tihar instead of Dipawali

Traffic accidents claim 11 lives Friday morning

Two separate bus accidents have claimed 11 lives in the last 24 hours. In a terrible bus accident at Prithvi highway, 10 passengers, including a woman and two children, have been killed. 46 others have been injured when a passenger bus veered off the road at Mahadevbesi of Dhading early morning Friday.

Third Day Summit talks kick off at Baluwatar: Consensus likely by this evening

The third day summit talks between the seven parties and the CPN Maoists have kicked off a short while ago at Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar. Top leaders of all eight political parties are participating in the meeting. Leaders have expressed hopes that today’s talks will be decisive.

नेपालि कम्युनिष्ट आन्दोलनका प्रखर दार्शनिक नेता मनिने मोहन बिक्रम सिंहको पार्टि चार चिरामा बिभाजित भएको छ । लामो समयदेखि आन्तरिक बिबाद झेल्दै आइरहेको जनमोर्चा नेपाल औपचारिक रुपमै बिभाजनको संघारमा आइपुगेको हो । नेकपा एकताकेन्द्र र नेकपा मसालबिच 2058 सालमा पार्टि एकिकरण हुदा तिनका चुनाबि मोर्चाहरु क़्रमश सम्युक्त ज़नमोर्चा र रास्ट्रिय ज़नमोर्चा मिलेर ज़नमोर्चा नेपालको निर्माण भएको थियो । माओबादिलाइ हेर्ने द्रिश्टिकोणमा भिन्नता रहेका बखतनै एकिकरण भएको सो पर्टिमा सो अंतर्बिरोध पछिल्लो समयमा चर्किएको थियो । सो अंतर्बिरोध संगसंगै प्रतिगमन बिरोधि आन्दोलनका बखत अन्य छ दलसंग मिलेर जाने वा पार्टिले आफ्नै आन्दोलन गर्ने भन्ने सवालमा पनि पर्टिभित्र बिभाजन देखिएको थियो । पुर्ब एकताकेन्द्र पक्षका अमिक शेरचन र प्रकाशले माओबादिसंग आठ बुदे सहमति गर्न महत्त्वपुर्ण भुमिका ख़ेलेपछि स्पश्टरुपमा पुर्ब मसाल पक्षिय मोहनबिक्रम पक्षले तेसका बिरुद्ध बिद्रोह गरेको थियो । ज़नआन्दोलन सफल भैसकेपछि सरकारमा सामेल हुने वा नहुने भन्ने सवालमा पनि दुइ गुटबिच मतभिन्नता आएको थियो । अमिक शेरचन सरकारमा जाने र परि थापालाइ सँसदिय दलको नेता चुनिएपछि मोहन बिक्रम पक्षले बुटवलमा एक भेला गरि ज़नमोर्चा नेपालका अध्यक्ष अमिक शेरचन र सँसदिय दलका नेता परि थापालाइ हटाएर दुबै जिम्मेवारि चित्र बहादुर क़ेसिलाइ दिने निर्णय गरेको थियो ।

Of Dogs and Donkeys

I was lazily strolling in my neighborhood one fine morning when I heard high pitched barks of a dog, followed by rounds of applause, in the distance. Curious, I weaved my way through the narrow alleys towards the sounds and came upon a square where a red Labrador, flanked by two Poodles, on a platform, was barking into a microphone, surrounded by a mass of myriad creatures – horses, cows, cats, chickens, pigeons, crows, snakes, rats and so on.

Summit talks towards a positive end: Constituent Assembly Polls by June/Consensus likely Thursday (Update)

Summit talks between the seven-parties and the CPN Maoists on Tuesday have agreed to hold the constituent Assembly polls by Mid June next year. The second day meeting among the series of talks which kicked off Sunday has also agreed to give the election commission the full shape and suggest it to make preparations for the election.

Nepal government reacts over North Korean nuclear test

The Nepal Government has expressed grave concern over the recent nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Issuing a statement Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Government of Nepal views the Korean nuclear test as an unfortunate and uncalled for incident.

Opportunities Ahead

As the country is making progress towards reaching an all-party agreement that may lead to a peaceful political settlement building up on the April uprising, it is not too early to think about the various opportunities that loom in Nepal’s horizon that the forthcoming government will have to choose from. Finding the right opportunities and opting for them will help us prosper in the next 10-15 years. Any opportunity we opt for should be tied to the comparative advantage we have as a small nation (but not too small by the number of people we have) in the planet. Our comparative advantage lies in cheap labor, beautiful mountains, massive water resources, and the indomitable spirit of our people. Also, we can’t be shooting for too many competing opportunities.
Question would be “who identifies the opportunities and goals for a nation?” I think it is the national government that creates platform for zillions of opportunities for the private entrepreneurs and then the entrepreneurs play on the platform and propel the nation towards prosperity. I am going to talk about basic stuffs that the government (I mean the people’s government which I hope will be formed within the next two years) needs to do to allow entrepreneurs to succeed. If we have a government which can engineer (note – there is a difference between providing and engineering) availability of basic stuffs like education and health care, we as a nation can head uphill. It won’t be easy because when the going gets easy, we could be going downhill.

Quills

I couldn't go to work today. I fell ill. Dashain finally caught up with me, I guess. I stayed home and watched a movie. It was called Quills and it starred Geoffrey Rush as the infamous Marquis de Sade. The plot of the movie is partly based upon true events. Regardless of what one's opinion is of de Sade, I must state this for the record: the character portrayed in this movie is an inspiration to all aspiring writers.
In a desperate effort to censor him, they take away his paper, ink and quills. So he writes on his linen with red wine and a piece of wishbone. They take that away; so he writes on his clothes with his own blood. He does not stop even after his tongue has been cut off. He keeps writing until he takes his very last breath.
My keyboard is broken. The "a", "s" and "w" keys don't work. I wrote this text by copying and pasting each time I had to use any of those three letters. I would like to think of it as a tribute to de Sade, however little or inappropriate it may be.
