BUS no 392, was a wrong bus!!!

By Saurav Thakur

July 31, 2006

Bearing a confused mind and to fulfill my mother’s wish to meet my relatives, my journey started, thinking more about the people I am going to miss and trifle about the ones I am going to meet.

Weighing both time and my pocket status, I decided to take the cheapest means of travel, bus, which eventually would prove to be the worst decision of the day. I was headed towards Noida which is about 60 km from our office at Gurgaon. What is your expected time to cross a distance of just 60 km when you have all means of Transport? – one hour, 2 hours or lets say two and half hours in the worst case. I was prepared for the worst case but even in some cases preparing for the worst in not enough.

It had already started to rain by the time I reached a bus stand near our office, after 15 minutes of walk. There was no single trace of a bus in sight and as the time passed by with still no sign of any bus, I started to rethink the decision to commute by bus. Some time I would eye the highway for a bus and in next moment the sky in a hope that it would stop raining. Finally to put my anxious anticipation to rest, a lonesome bus made a screeching stop in the bus stand. I was not sure whether to take that bus or not. But a beggar can never be chooser; there was no other option so I had to go where-ever it took.

Herbal Hankering

By Sanjib Chaudhary

July 20, 2006

Meeting Chunni Lal was an incident that led me to write this piece of information. My grandmother is an old lady in her seventies and she tries her best to avoid allopathic medicines. And to my amazement, she knows a lot of people who are proponents of their own ready-made concoctions from locally found herbs. She had called one of the Vaidhyas who had a vast knowledge of Ayurveda, Vaastu and Astrology. We had a formal introduction and we talked, discussed and argued. We talked about my grandmother's illness and he popped up the cure – wrote down a concoction of herbs with weird names. I had heard names of just one or two among them. The good thing about him was that he told me the place and name of the merchant from whom I could buy those herbs – Rajbiraj and Chunni Lal.

Keep Talking

By Ritesh Khanal

July 19, 2006

As those eggs were boiling just out of curiosity I asked, “Hey auntie, how do these eggs get inside the chicken in the first place?” I was 8 then. The answer I got didn’t help my curiosity but at least I understood I should never ask how eggs get inside chicken. It wasn’t somehow similar to asking my dad “What’s beyond the end of universe?” where he would sit there for hours and try to explain about infinity.

I used to love scary movies, especially Hindi horror movies. I wasn’t very much specific about Hindi or English movies, I just loved any scary movie; but most of the English scary movies started with a big 18 plus sign and that meant I couldn’t watch that movie. “Time for you guys to go to bed” Dad would say. We never asked him why and he never bothered to explain either.

Bloom in your own colors

By Dovan Rai

July 17, 2006

Teenage self doubts, commercialism of beauty, imposition of beauty as compulsion for women, and due to my own modest genes, I had insecurities over my looks.

Given that Bollywood Caucasian heroines and Hollywood blondes were the stereotypes, I, an average, middle class, Mongolian Nepali girl had complaints over my height, hair, complexion, and almost everything else.

Need for Judicial Accountability and Reforms

By Ishwar Khatiwada

July 11, 2006

Several recent decisions by the special judicial court on corruption related cases in favor of notorious corrupt political leaders reveal Nepal’s inefficient and frequently biased judicial system. Such decisions call for immediate reforms to reinvigorate the present legal system to deliver justice and create a corruption free, efficient and fair society, which will aid in Nepal’s economic development. A modern economy requires judicial system of such a nature. Every study undertaken by a reputable international research body of Nepal’s judiciary system has pointed out that Nepal’s judicial system, except the Supreme Court, is mired in corruption and is grossly inefficient and often unfair in delivering justice. These studies also have consistently revealed that lawsuits and criminal cases in Nepal’s courts have piled up for years without any timely decisions, raising the cost to the society. The business community in Nepal frequently complains about the courts inability to ensure the enforcement of contracts.

To the breeze

By heretic (Aashish Dutta Koirala)

July 03, 2006

There is a strange fantasy I have that stems from a recurring dream that I have been having for the last six years. In the dream, I am standing on the edge of a cliff. The sun is just about to set and therefore the clouds are glowing red. There is a cool breeze flowing that is “heavenly” – for the lack of a better word. I can feel the presence of another person beside me. At this very moment, I feel as good as I will ever feel; for if such a thing as “the one you are meant to be with” exists, I believe this person is she. As I turn around towards her so as to reveal her face, the dream ends abruptly.
