Description:

Women in Nepal are marginalized.
Women of indigenous communities are behind.
Sons are better looked after than daughters.

After seeing this symoblic expression on the little girl’s face on March 7, 2009, a day ahead of the 99th International Women’s Day, I just hoped in the years to come, a woman may not need to photograph another woman depicting her innocence, poverty, and misery.

    Completely RACIST description!
just by looking at the picture, one cannot reach to that conclusion.

  5. AshishP Says:

I feel the description is not right for this photo, Women’s discrimination and Women’s day context doesn’t fit this photo. There is nothing that describes women’s discrimination or women being behind.

  6. Reality Says:

Reality is bitter and ‘RealityS’ your liking or disliking is not going to change the reality.

But very much dissatisfied with the description. No match (in no way near to the picture). Will post my view in detail in couple of days..

Dear all, thanks for your suggestions on the description…i really appreciate them..but someway i felt, maybe you didn’t read the last line, i had written: “……..a woman may not need to photograph another woman depicting her innocence, poverty, and misery.”

i’d be more glad if you could focus on that too…but sincere thanks to your suggestions…i’ll keep in mind when i next post a pic..

I can imagine the circumstances you were in while you took this shot and how tough you must be to convey some message to the viewers along with this heart wrenching portrait of a poor girl.

If one tries to view this picture with state of Nepalese’s women context, I think it can depict more than just marginalized women of Nepal. And no thousands of words can express all those harsh realities that exist in our society. Prerana you should have let this picture finds its own way to viewers’ mind and heart to convey the message which you have mentioned in your description.

In my personal opinion, photojournalist should never try to reflect her/himself in the reality that s/he wants to portray to the rest of the world. Feel free to disagree my opinion.

May this wish your yours, “Woman may not need to photograph another woman depicting her innocence, poverty, and misery.” in this new year 2066. Keep clicking, I know you have knack to see what other don’t.
