Description:
Mahashivaratri, the great night of Lord Shiva, is celebrated every year on the eve of the moonless night in the month of Falgun. Thousands of Hindu devotees are observed at Pasupatinath on this night. Activities of Sadhus and widely available Bhang on this night have been another major reason for many, specially youngsters, to visit Pasupatinath.
There are several versions of beliefs related to the celebration of this auspicious night. It is believed that Lord Shiva was married to Parvati on this day and performed the ‘Tandava’. Some people believe this was the night when Lord Shiva ‘created himself’ by his divine grace and others believe that this night was the choice of Shiva as the favorite night when asked by Parvati.

According to Hindu mythology Maha shivratri is the night when Lord Shiva himself was created by his own divine grace. And have heard about this version from many learned people in Hiduism.
A compilation by me about Mahashivratri from Nepali\’s perspective , can be found @

My sincere thanks to all of you for your candid comments
Dear Mr Sensible, thanks for the response. If religious significance behind Shivaratri that you have mentioned truly have strong evidence, we need to clean the clutter floating around the internet.
For the second para of the description, following were the sources. Ironically none of them writes about the ‘created himself’ story.

Sorry DreamSky, have no strong evidences. Its that I personally have found these evidence in the form of “word of mouth” from my Late Granfather (maternal), who had a strong hold in Vedas, and Manuscripts related to Hinduism.
I don’t think we can have a perfect answer for this.
May be “Shiva Bhagwan” if following our converstation, can clear this out..hehe
