    Is Journalism Business or Service?

Some say journalism is service while others have urged that it is sheer an industry. People, having belief in service, would say that journalism is primarily for the society and its people. They strongly advocate on the behalf of the responsibility that journalists should undertake. Many of us consider journalism as Fourth Estate of the nation. If we do agree with what many conventional scholars and media person suggest, then truly journalism is a service. This school of thought always sees journalism as a watchdog of the society. They deem that the foremost job of media should always be disseminating the news and informing the people about the current happenings and facilitate them to make decisions on the various subject matters. Media constantly should observe what is going on within the border and outside the border. It is the media that ensures whether or not people have got justice. It is the media that guarantees the fundamental rights of citizens. It is the media that challenges the works of government, if it finds government to be neglecting the people needs and desires. It time and again reminds the government about the plight, troubles, and problems of the citizens, forcing to implement the necessarily right and precise actions with in time. Not only this, media empowers every person by running various educational, and health programs. It informs the people about the new happenings and development of science and technology including other various regions. The concept of “Community Radio” is a good example to say; journalism is service.
People, on other hand, who regard journalism as an industry, are utterly against the notion of journalism as service oriented. At first, to run media, one needs large amount of funds. And it is apparent that the only reliable source of getting large amount of funds is advertising. Due to pressure from advertisers, the publisher might not give actual facts. He might distort the news being bias to the other party. The question of objectivity and credibility always keep the soul of journalism in a bay, when the vested interests of certain groups interfere in journalism. Besides, the concentration of ownerships also speaks on the side of journalism as industry. Media these days is not the voice of voiceless people. Rather it has become the hand-kit of media tycoons, political personalities, and industrialists. Rupert Murdoch can be taken as good example. He owns most of the media in the whole world. No matter, whether it is Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe or US, Murdoch has extended his business all over the world. He is doing business through journalism.

Journalism has an immense power and, like any kind of power, its power too has the potential of being misused.

I have always seen journalism as a respectful service. Because it is. It’s only some of the journalists and media owners disturbing its image.
